Leftovers

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/19/13

  • Jeffrey Kuhner says "leftists have perpetrated most terrorist atrocities in America."
  • Rick Green echos that idea and wonders if Democrats should be banned from owning guns.
  • Rep. Louie Gohmert is so in tune with the Religious Right that he is filling in for FRC's Tony Perkins on his radio broadcast today.
  • Os Hillman says gay rights are not equal to civil rights because being black is not a sin.
  • Finally, James Robison links the Boston bombing to legalized abortion: "While Americans and freedom loving people around the world openly express their horror at the heartless destruction of the innocent, should we not examine our own hearts as a people? Our great nation has silently allowed the termination of more than fifty million little innocent lives to be taken in the wombs of their mothers. Hitler murdered over eleven million people in the Holocaust, and Stalin almost twenty million. America has doubled that and the casualties are still mounting."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/18/13

  • Anti-Semitic slurs are probably not helping the GOP’s rebranding effort.
  • In case you haven’t already lost faith in Congress, Republican congressman Jeff Duncan is now citing the Drudge Report as a “reputable news source.”
  • Quote of the day from Don Feder: “Our president isn't about border security or national security or protecting the lives of innocent Americans (for whom he is largely indifferent, when an election isn't pending), but disarming innocent Americans, multi-cultural sensitivity, Muslim outreach, fighting negative stereotypes of Islam and giving great photo ops.”

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/17/13

  • The Family Research Council is organizing a "Stand With Scouts Sunday" event to be held on May 5.
  • Erik Rush's insistence that he was being sarcastic when he called for all Muslims to be killed in response to the Boston Marathon bombing is laughable to anyone familiar with his history of radical rhetoric.
  • On his radio program today, Glenn Beck hinted at possible plans to open a Washington, DC bureau of The Blaze in order to apply for White House credentials.
  • Sen. Marco Rubio gets a first hand look of what it is like dealing with the Right's misinformation machine.
  • Things are not going well for Mark Sanford.
  • Finally, Rick Joyner explains that Christians should not fear being the victims of a terrorist attack because if they die, they get to go straight to Heaven.

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/16/13

  • Erik Rush is not backing down from the controversy he set off yesterday, declaring that "this army of dhimmi idiots reeeeally isn't doing much to convince me I was wrong about anything here..."
  • Pat Buchanan says that civil disobedience may be the only option if the Supreme Court rules in favor of marriage equality.
  • If someone was booted from their band like this for opposing gay marriage, the Religious Right would be railing about it for weeks.
  • Rick Joyner warns that "without another Great Awakening, we will not survive as a Republic much longer."
  • Finally, Matt Barber continues to demonstrate that he is one of the most offensive and bigoted anti-gay activists operating today: "Most homosexuals know intuitively, I think, that their lifestyle is unnatural and immoral and that the oxymoronic notion of 'same-sex marriage' is a silly farce. Thus, they must force others to affirm both their self-destructive lifestyle and their mock 'marriages' under penalty of law. They must physically compel everyone to engage their “emperor’s new clothes” delusion, so they can feel better about bad behavior. Well, my friend, making everyone else 'call evil good and good evil' won’t fill that dark void in your soul."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/12/13

  • Richard Land is set to become the president of the Southern Evangelical Seminary, where he intends to "produce an ever increasing number of graduates who will be the green berets and paratroopers of God’s army."
  • Gordon Klingenschmitt explains that Margaret Thatcher was a Christian because she supported capitalism, just like Jesus.
  • Tucker Carlson says he is a Christian and an Episcopalian "but I truly despise the Episcopal Church in a lot of ways."
  • FRC prays that God will protect us from North Korea: "God, please intervene! Our brazen sins make us vulnerable despite our nation's great military power. Our leaders' perspectives are clouded, only you can navigate our nation though these deep waters. May we rush to repent and obey your word! Watch over our friends. Be our Fortress and direct our civilian and military leaders."
  • Finally, Bryan Fischer says "Glenn Beck has completely lost his marbles" for supporting gay marriage:

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/11/13

  • Fox News reports that "at least a dozen members of Congress have signed a letter demanding the Secretary of the Army rescind and apologize for a briefing that labeled Evangelical Christians and Catholics as religious extremist groups."
  • Jim Graves, who barely lost to Rep. Michele Bachmann last time around, will be launching another campaign to face her again in 2014.
  • Ken Hutcherson says "progressives on the left side of the debate have an agenda, and it's the same one Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin had."
  • James Dobson grieves "over what Obama and the majority of Congressmen have done to the American family" and says " our government is secretly at war with the traditional family."
  • Ben Carson has withdrawn as the commencement speaker at the John Hopkins School of Medicine graduation ceremony.
  • Finally, apparently being gay is itself a sign that a person had an unhealthy relationship with their parents, which only proves that letting gay couples be parents is a really bad idea: "If two opposite sex parents are necessary to the raising of healthy children, how ironic, then, is the position held by proponents of same sex marriage that they can do the same when in fact they themselves are living out the negative consequences of not having had healthy relationships with two biological parents. They now wish to impose the very same deficits on the next generation of children, and then to declare this arrangement 'healthy.'"

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/10/13

  • It looks like the Religious Right is threatening to leave the GOP ... again.
  • Happy Anniversary, David Barton.
  • Sen. Rand Paul says America needs a “spiritual cleansing of the people.”  If we were like the Religious Right, we'd freak out because that kind of sounds like "ethnic cleansing" and start warning that Paul wants to kill all non-Christians.
  • Apparently Rush Limbaugh thinks "the onus is on the black population" to realize the GOP is not racist.
  • Finally, Rick Scarborough says "the goal of Obamacare has always been to drive everyone into a single-payer, government system.  Once that goal is achieved – and it is about to be achieved – Big Brother Government will control every citizen who wills to live and find medical care."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/9/13

  • Rick Santorum says "it would be suicidal" for the Republican Party to accept marriage equality.
  • Melissa Harris-Perry responds to the right-wing freakout over her MSNBC promo.
  • Diane Gramley, president of the American Family Association of Pennsylvania, responds to news that Sen. Bob Casey Jr. now supports gay marriage by saying that "if Bob Casey, Sr. was still alive, he would be extremely disappointed in his son."
  • Judging by the fact that its website is now defunct, we are guessing that the Newt Gingrich-founded and Jim Garlow-led Renewing American Leadership effort is no more.
  • Glenn Beck calls the Obamas the "most ostentatious family I've ever seen in my life."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/8/13

  • Anti-gay/anti-Mormon pastor Pastor Robert Jeffress opened a new $130 million campus at his church and Gov. Rick Perry was on hand to dedicate it.
  • Glenn Beck returned from a week off today and guess what he talked about?
  • This is actually an article from CNSNews: "Obama Responded Faster to Ebert's Death Than He Did to Thatcher's."
  • We predict that this story about the Army supposedly calling evangelicals a threat is one of those things that we initially dismiss as obvious nonsense, but then end up having to write about because the Religious Right goes nuts over it.
  • Ken Blackwell says there can be no comparison between the fight for gay rights and civil rights because "not all racists oppose same-sex marriage, and not all who oppose same-sex marriage are racists. To say otherwise is disrespectful and frankly ludicrous."
  • Finally Rick Scarborough warns that "the drive to legalize same-sex unions is the linchpin of an effort that will eventually result in the criminalization of Christianity and traditional Judaism ...  This is tyranny masquerading as enlightenment."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/4/13

  • It is pretty entertaining to see the Religious Right ripping Bill O'Reilly for his arrogance and ignorance, especially since they only seem to have discovered it once he upset them.
  • Case in point, Bill Keller has issued a $10,000 challenge to O'Reilly to debate him.
  • To hear Mat Staver and Matt Barber describe it, The Awakening Conference is just about the most important thing ever.
  • Speaking of Staver, he received the Faith Community Leader of the Year Award at the Weyrich Awards Dinner, which is a good reminder that radical Religious Right anti-gay voices are regularly honored within the movement.
  • Finally, and on a related note, Steve Deace takes on "laughabe gay marriage cliches" like "homosexuality is in nature so it’s natural" by declaring "there’s also the licking of one’s own genitals, the flinging of one’s own feces, and the eating of live prey and then vomiting it back up to feed your offspring in nature, too."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/3/13

  • Mark Sanford disappeared from his job as Governor of South Carolina and left the country in order to carry on an extra-marital affair and now he is the Republican nominee for Congress ... because the GOP is the party of family values.
  • It looks like Charisma magazine is engaged in some sort of tiff with TBN.
  • Samuel Rodriguez has a book coming out and the news release likens him to Martin Luther King, Jr and Billy Graham.
  • Apparently there really is no need for conservatives to worry because "the Left will soon be extinct."
  • Finally, because we can never get enough of efforts to link gay marriage to Sodom and Gomorrah, here is another one from Gary Cass: "God’s retribution on Sodom and Gomorrah for homosexual sin is used as a severe warning of what will come to all who refuse to repent of their sin."

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/2/13

  • The Catholic League comes to Ben Carson's defense, saying "Dr. Carson is a good man who was framed. It’s the sexologists and the Ivy Leaguers who need to explain themselves."
  • Presumably, Michele Bachmann regrets hiring Peter Waldron.
  • Regina Griggs of PFOX says that "as the mother of a homosexual child," she understands how Sen. Rob Portman is feeling but "as a responsible parent I must stand firm in my belief that marriage must remain as that of a man and a woman."
  • If The Blaze is going to mock President Obama for going 2 for 22 and being bad at basketball, it should at least know something about the sport and not say things like "that means Obama only made about 9 percent of the overall dunks he attempted."
  • Robert Spencer has a new book coming out.  Take one guess what it is about.
  • The Florida Family Policy Council's John Stemberger has launched a new group called OnMyHonor.net aimed at preventing the Boy Scouts from allowing gay members and troop leaders.
  • Finally, Ken Hutcherson is calling on Christians and Republican voters to rise up and demand that RNC Chairman Reince Priebus resign.

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/1/13

  • After 42 years, Liberty University gets its first female commencement speaker: Fox News correspondent (and LU alum) Shannon Bream.
  • In a shocking development, Religious Right activists and candidates don't think the GOP should moderate its stance on social issues.
  • Matt Barber says gay marriage is "like taking a rotten apple, spray-painting it orange, and then calling it an orange. 'Same-sex marriage' is no more real marriage then a rotten apple is an orange. It’s mock marriage."
  • Scott Lively is apparently very hurt by a recent article about him in Boston Magazine.
  • Finally, Buster Wilson defends the AFA's practice of boycotting companies: "Will God be ok with us willfully making a purchase, or purchases from a business that we KNOW will use that same money we are stewards over to help create an 'in your face' action against God?"

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/29/13

  • Wouldn't cutting off funding for an anti-bullying program that critics say "bullies Christians and conservatives" itself be a form of bullying?
  • CBN "journalist" David Brody interviewed Sen. Rand Paul.  Take one guess what he asked him about.
  • We were wondering how long it would take the Right to get worked up about the plot of the new "Bioshock Infinite" game.
  • "Gay Patriot" Bruce Carroll has decided not to challenge Sen. Lindsey Graham.
  • Finally, FRC prays that the Supreme Court will uphold the traditional definition of marriage and that "this ruling [will] be the Waterloo for same-sex marriage!"

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/28/13

  • Oh look, Sarah Palin's PAC is gearing up for 2014, presumably so it can raise money so she can fly around the country and stay in hotels.
  • Glenn Beck's The Blaze announces that the network has been picked up by "the 21st-largest cable operator in the nation." Quite a coup!
  • Faith and Action's Rob Scheck says "DOMA is doomed."
  • Apparently America has not learned from what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah and so "we are going to learn the hard way that God means exactly what he has spoken."
  • Finally, Mat Staver rips Charles Cooper, the attorney who defended Proposition 8 before the Supreme Court: “Cooper did a terrible job, both in terms of his oratory delivery and was horrible on the substance.”

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/27/13

  • If a journalist is going to quote David Barton claiming that "you’ll find direct quotations from the Bible throughout the Constitution," they ought to have an obligation to at least point out that it isn't true.
  • On a related note, Rick Green makes the case against marriage equality in a way that makes Barton seem like a genius.
  • Concerned Women for America is not happy about the news that journalists Jenna Wolfe and Stephanie Gosk are having a baby.
  • Glenn Beck is a crazy person, but that doesn't stop people like Sen. Ted Cruz from appearing on his radio program.
  • Apparently, Rep. Louie Gohmert does not take kindly to receiving a parking ticket.
  • Finally, did you know that "President Barack Obama is now the global head of Al-Qaeda"?

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/26/13

  • Bryan Fischer says "the fact that we are in court at all [on DOMA and Prop 8] is already a defeat for the Constitution and the American principle of self-governance."
  • Frank Gaffney opposes the nomination of Thomas Perez to become the Secretary of Labor because Perez once hugged a Muslim.
  • Larry Klayman is suing the City Pages of Minnesota and Phoenix New Times, "charging that they defamed him by stating falsely that he inappropriately touched his children."
  • Russell Moore will replace Richard Land as president of the Southern Baptist Commission's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
  • Finally, this is the title of a segment from Glenn Beck's radio program today: "Is Joe Biden drunk a lot?"

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/25/13

  • Things continue not going well for Michele Bachmann.
  • Matt Barber says that if the Supreme Court doesn't make the correct rulings on DOMA and Prop 8, it "will literally shake Western civilization to the core." Literally?

  • Richard Land likewise weighs in, saying "we should not think that our nation will escape God's judgment if we redefine what God has already defined. We are certain that the omniscient and omnipotent God is aware of our nation's debate about marriage and that He is watching what we do."
  • Jeb Bush praises his brother, the former president, "not having an opinion on anything over the last four years." That is supposed to be compliment?
  • Finally, apparently Tea Partiers are now boycotting Fox News for being too liberal.

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/22/13

  • Glenn Beck calls Rabbi Daniel Lapin "David Barton on steroids," so that pretty much tells you all you need to know about Lapin.
  • Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich announced his support for civil unions ... and then immediately backtracked.
  • I cannot believe that we were denied the joys of a Gingrich-Santorum unity ticket!
  • "Family Research Council has taken a bold new action," by which it means launching a daily radio program hosted by Tony Perkins, for which it needs money, of course.
  • Finally, James Dobson says that "at times it seems as though our elected and appointed leaders are trying to destabilize the country."

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/21/13

  • Note to Michele Bachmann, when even Bill O'Reilly is ripping you to shreds, it is time to give it up.
  • Bryan Fischer wants to know why every lawyer working at the Department of Justice hasn't been disbarred for refusing to defend DOMA.
  • American Academy of Pediatrics says that parents’ sexual orientation has no effect on a child’s development.  This is, of course, not sitting well with the anti-gay Religious Right.
  • Want to be in a movie being produced by Liberty Counsel and staring Erik Estrada? Of course you do! Auditions start tomorrow.
  • This is the actual title of a piece by CBN's David Brody: "Will the GOP's Inclusive Tone Bring About Its Demise?"
  • Finally, John Hagee says that smoking, like gluttony, is a sin:

It is nice to know that someone like Mark Sanford can abandon his government post and his family to fly out of the country to visit his mistress and then get re-elected to Congress by conservative family values Republican voters in South Carolina. Rev. Steve Kern, the husband of Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern, has announced that he is seeking a state Senate seat. Samuel Rodriguez says that right-wing Christian activists will abandon immigration reform efforts if gay couples are included in the legislation. Is anyone shocked?: "A co-author of a new Heritage Foundation study... MORE

The Government Is Not God PAC has "very publicly refused to endorse" Mark Sanford or, as they describe him, "the confessed adulterer who as Commander-in-Chief of South Carolina deserted his post for several days for a 'hook-up' he had arranged online." Is Mike Huckabee already thinking of ending his daily radio show? Rick Scarborough, the anti-gay activist who believes that AIDS is God's punishment for homosexuality, will be on Glenn Beck's television program on Thursday. Another Religious Right tale of Christian victimization bites the dust... MORE
Brian Tashman, Monday 05/06/2013, 5:30pm
Newt Gingrich continues to make the patently false claim that gay marriage “outlawed” Catholic charities.  Almost a year after predicting that President Obama would be impeached over Benghazi, Mike Huckabee once again predicted that President Obama will be impeached over Benghazi.  Yet another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-CO), has endorsed the debunked conspiracy theory that Christians in the military will face court martials.  Christian Post columnist Wallace Henley foresees the rise of a “New Majority” focused on opposing... Police have released more information on the Houston airport shooter and none of it backs up Glenn Beck’s “guarantee” that the shooter is an “uber left,” Occupy Wall Street radical who is trying to “set up” the NRA.  Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) is the latest Republican to embrace the discredited allegation that the military is preparing to court-martial Christians.  A bill to repeal Louisiana’s Creationist education law was killed in committee. Does Brian Brown seriously think that most people would back laws... MORE

Buster Wilson is in a contest with colleagues to see who can gain the most Twitter followers by the end of the month.  We'd be happy to help ... but he's blocking us. Is Karen Handel preparing for a Senate run from Georgia? Bryan Fischer seems to be convinced that it is somehow effective for him to just keep repeating his call for a ban on Muslim immigration and mosques. Glenn Beck is partnering with a Hollywood filmmaker on an art curriculum that he hopes to get into public schools. Finally, the Justice Department is appealing a judge's decision striking... MORE

Rick Joyner claims that Timothy McVeigh "was a left-wing extremist." Focus on the Family comes to the defense of Chris Broussard and encourages activists to show him support. Ted Cruz for President in 2016! FRC issues its latest prayer update: "The scourge presently upon our nation - wars, devastating weather, acts of terrorism, confusion and failure among our government leaders, spiritual confusion in many of our churches, decimation of the family, economic decline, government oppression, advancing socialism, government promoted and protected abortion,... The pastor convicted of helping Lisa Miller kidnap her daughter and flee the country says Miller "is a living testimony to the Power of Jesus, the Power that can set us free from the burden of sin, even the sins of a sexual nature that all of us face in this decadent age." Michele Bachmann seems to have real difficulty telling the truth. Rick Green really loves George W. Bush: "When President Bush and Laura came out to speak for a few minutes at the dinner, it only took about thirty seconds of his genuine, no-nonsense but joyful delivery for me to realize how much I...
