Rafael Cruz Defends Ex-Gay Therapy: 'Sexual Orientation Is A Choice'

Ted Cruz’s dad and top political surrogate Rafael Cruz recently addressed the National Religious Broadcasters convention, where he took part in a February 25 panel discussion with Religious Right activists Jay Sekulow, Todd Starnes and Craig and Janet Parshall.

During the discussion, Cruz defended businesses engaging in anti-gay discrimination and harmful and discredited forms of ex-gay “therapy” for minors which were recently restricted in California and New Jersey. New Jersey’s law was signed by Republican Gov. Chris Christie, a possible 2016 presidential rival to the younger Cruz.

“Sexual orientation is a choice, it’s not a civil right,” Cruz said while discussing cases of anti-gay discrimination in business. “The left is trying to redefine the issue as a civil right, not as a personal choice. They have gone to the extent to even try to make it illegal for counselors to administer to these people that have certain sexual tendencies to try to work with them from the Christian, biblical standpoint.”

Cruz later added that he opposes gay rights — which he believes are part of a Communist plot and lead to child abuse — because he loves gay people and does not want to “prostitute the Gospel.”

Rafael Cruz: Obama Wants to 'Take Our God And Our Guns' To 'Impose A Dictatorship Upon Us'

In a 2012 campaign speech for his son, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Rafael Cruz warned that President Obama was pushing for gun violence prevention laws in order to “impose a dictatorship upon us.”

“They are trying to take our God and our guns,” he said in the speech, which was uploaded to YouTube in July 2012. “And if they do that, then they can impose a dictatorship upon us.”

Cruz also pushed the conspiracy theory that the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty would “impose a ban on guns.”

Rafael Cruz Is Now Just Repeating David Barton's Pseudo-History

Recently, Rafael Cruz spoke to the Allen Area Patriots, a Tea Party group in Texas, where he informed those gathered "about the Liberal Progressive's move to socialize America, and what we can do about it."

While watching Cruz's remarks, we were struck by fact that he has essentially become a second-rate version of David Barton, so much so that he is now just repeating Barton's pseudo-history as part of his stump speech, claiming that the Declaration of Independence is nothing more than a collection of sermons and that over half of the Founding Fathers held "seminary degrees."

Both of these claims come straight from Barton, as we demonstrate in this video featuring Cruz's claims alongside excerpts from Barton's standard presentation in which he makes the same assertions:

Rafael Cruz: Gays Stole The Word 'Gay,' Are 'Potential Sexual Predators'

In yet another anti-gay rant posted on YouTube last year, Ted Cruz’s father and chief surrogate Rafael argued that it is inaccurate to call gay people “gay.” After arguing that abortion rights supporters should not be called “pro-choice” but rather “pro-death” and “pro-murder,” Cruz explained that “it’s just like calling homosexuals ‘gays.’ ‘Gay’ means happy, they try to dilute it so that it becomes socially acceptable.”

Cruz told a gathering of the Tea Party-aligned group Grassroots America We The People that gay rights advocates want conservatives to “prostitute our principles on behalf of tolerance” and vowed to never support marriage equality. “Start being biblically correct instead of politically correct,” he said.

In a speech at a Baptist church in Irving, Texas in June, Cruz went into detail about his claims that gay people are a threat to children and suggested that gays will join the Boy Scouts of America to sexually assault children.

“I was a Boy Scout, most of the times when you went out camping the tents were tents for two kids, I certainly don’t want my child with a potential sexual predator sleeping next to him,” he said.

He said Christians should have been more “militant” in order to prevent the Boy Scouts from including openly gay scouts and criticized the Southern Baptists for not breaking off ties with the BSA completely.

Rafael Cruz Tries To Disprove Evolution, Suggests Obama Thinks He Is God

Yesterday, we posted clips of Sen. Ted Cruz’s father Rafael Cruz attacking evolution and warning of Satanic control of America. Now, a reader has alerted us to a speech the elder Cruz gave to a Republican gathering in Texas in March, in which he claimed that he could disprove evolution to the “brainwashed” students in attendance.

After making his usual claim that evolution and gay rights are communist plots, Cruz warned, “We are being brainwashed by the school system and you’re called a ‘retrograde,’ you’re called an ‘idiot’ if you fight evolution. Evolution is not a fact, there is nothing factual about evolution.”

Let me just say something for you kids, evolution is based on jumping from one species to another through mutations. How many of you had biology in high school? Mutations normally go in reverse order, they go backwards, when something mutates it mutates into something worse than it was before. So if evolution moves from species to species by mutation, you’re going backwards, not forwards, it doesn’t make sense. It takes more faith to believe in evolution than to believe in the first two chapters of Genesis. Understand, it is a tool to destroy loyalty to God.

Later in the address, Cruz alleged that President Obama wants people to worship him. “Obama needs for you to see him as God,” Cruz said. “The concept is make government your god. It’s done by evolution, it’s done by destroying the concept of religion and God, and secondly by destroying the family.”

“That’s what this whole thing about homosexual marriage is about,” he added. “It has nothing to do with ‘homosexual rights,’ It has to do with the destruction of the traditional family so that there is no loyalty to the family, loyalty is to the government and government is your god.”

Rafael Cruz: Satan Controls US Government

After denouncing evolution and gay rights as Marxist lies, Rafael Cruz told a Texas Christian men’s group in June that Satan controls the US government. While quoting Second Great Awakening evangelist Charles Grandison Finney, he said that the US has fallen into a state of moral decline.

“‘If the world loses its interest in religion,’ does that sound like today?” Cruz said, “‘If Satan rules in the hall of legislation,’ man this sounds like he’s talking about right now.’”

Rafael Cruz: Evolution Is A Communist Lie, Gay Rights Endanger Children

Rafael Cruz, the father of Ted Cruz and the Texas Senator’s number one surrogate, is a favorite among Tea Party and Religious Right activists with his birther, Christian Nationalist and End Times-focused speeches.

Rafael Cruz: The Media Is America's 'Ministry Of Misinformation'

Glenn Beck spent the first half of last night's television program freaking out about something called The U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, which he claimed was going to become an American equivalent of the Nazi regime's Ministry of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment, before bringing on Rafael Cruz, the father of Sen. Ted Cruz, to discuss what could be done to defeat this effort to permanently rewrite America's history.

Cruz told Beck that "it almost seemed like I was listening to what was happening in Cuba during Castro," saying it sounded just like "a ministry of misinformation that you have in all the communist countries." In fact, Cruz said, there already is a Ministry of Misinformation in America and it is called the liberal media, which has an evil agenda that seeks to destroy "what this country is all about."

Cruz then went on to trot out the false claim that President Obama omits the phrase "by the creator" when quoting the Declaration of Independence , saying that he does so "because socialism, Marxism requires that government become your god":

Ted Cruz's Dad Cites Manipulated Obama Quote, Bogus Health Care Claim In Incendiary Speech

In a speech Friday, Rafael Cruz, Religious Right activist and father of Sen. Ted Cruz, cited a fake quote from The Audacity of Hope to suggest that President Obama is a Muslim.

In audio obtained by ColoradoPols.com, the elder Cruz told the Adams County Republican Party, “Barack Obama said: If the winds shift, I will side with the Muslims.” When an audience member shouted, “He is Muslim!,” Cruz seemed to agree and replied: “McCain couldn’t say that, because it’s not politically correct. It is time to stop being politically correct!”

The quote of Obama saying he will “side with the Muslims” has been making the rounds on right-wing chain emails. The myth-busting website Snopes.com found that the line is a “rewording of a passage” from his book regarding “the importance of not allowing inflamed public opinion to result in innocent members of immigrant groups being stripped of their rights” and “contains no specific mention of ‘Muslims.’”

In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Cruz also repeated the thoroughly debunked claim that Obamacare will require people to have “end-of-life counseling” every five years, which he refers to as “suicide counseling.” PolitiFact called the charge an “outright distortion” of a provision that would have allowed Medicare to “cover the cost of end-of-life counseling sessions,” which are optional, and to “cover one session every five years.” The sessions would not have been mandatory and would not have “encourage[d] patients to end their lives.”

But even that provision isn’t currently law: It was dropped from the final bill thanks to far-right conspiracy theories.

Cruz went on to call the majority of Republican Senators “RINOs” for not supporting his son on a cloture vote for a government funding bill.

  • Rafael Cruz will speak at Liberty University in November.
  • Notorious crackpot Erik Rush will appear on Sean Hannity's Fox News program tonight.
  • You know, if WND really thought that the SPLC's anti-gay hate map incited violence, they would stop printing it in their articles!
  • Molotov Mitchell is still mad at Glenn Beck for stealing the name "For The Record."
  • Finally, James Dobson fumes: "Shame on the schools and churches that are teaching the young that sexual immorality is not an offense against the Almighty, whether it is homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual. Sin is sin, and our leaders used to call it by that name. Now children hear regularly that perversity is a civil right protected by the Constitution. But biblical truth has not changed. The wages of sin is still death, as it has always been."

Ted Cruz's Father Tells Him 'God Has Destined You For Greatness'

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz stumped in Iowa over the weekend, and his father Rafael Cruz was promoting his son’s possibly presidential candidacy to pastors and local Republican leaders during his trip. In fact, he said in an interview with Chrsitian Broadcasting Networks’ David Brody that he told his son: “You know Ted, you have been gifted above any man that I know and God has destined you for greatness.’ And I started making declarations about the Word of God to him every day.”

He goes on to suggest that his son is destined to save freedom in America, and even Brody called Cruz’s political career “a thing of God.”

As we’ve noted, Rafael Cruz is a Religious Right activist himself , and he also revealed to Brody that he was active in the Religious Roundtable.

The Religious Roundtable was founded by Ed McAteer and included leaders like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Phyllis Schlafly and Paul Weyrich. The group also helped launch Ronald Reagan’s bid for president in 1980 and hosted the conference where he quipped, “I know you can’t endorse me, but I endorse you.”

Brody: Talk me about your son and his rise. This must be a thing of God. It's meteoric.

Cruz: Yes, but you know something, it is not something that started a couple of years ago. Let me just go back to when he was maybe four. When he was four I used to read Bible stories to him all the time. And I would declare and proclaim the word of God over him. And I would just say, ‘You know Ted, you have been gifted above any man that I know and God has destined you for greatness’. And I started making declarations about the Word of God to him every day. When he was eight years old I was very active in an organization called the Religious Roundtable.

...

This was a coalition of Christians and Jews who was very instrumental in helping Reagan get elected. I was on the state board of the Religious Roundtable, so when my son Ted was eight years old, all we talked about around the dinner table was politics because I was so involved with the Reagan campaign. So during that time is when I asked him so many times, ‘You know Ted, when I lost my freedom in Cuba I had a place to come to. If we lose our freedoms here where are we going to go? There is no place to go.’

...

Ted enters high school, the Free Enterprise Institute organizes a group of five kids, called them the Constitutional Corroborators, now Ted is reading the The Federalist Papers, The Anti-Federalist Papers, and each of the five kids memorized the entire US Constitution.

...

So before my son left high school he was passionate about the constitution. He was passionate about freedom and free markets and limited governments. Before he left high school he knew without a shadow of a doubt what his purpose in life was and it was to defend and protect freedom and the Constitution, to fight for free markets and limited government, and it became a passion in his life. So this is not a trajectory of three years, this is a trajectory of 30 years.

Rafael Cruz: The Declaration And Constitution Were 'Divine Revelation From God'

We were aware that Sen. Ted Cruz's father, Rafael, has become something of a right-wing speaker in the wake of his son's election to the Senate, but we did not realize that the elder Cruz is a full-blown Religious Right activist until we watched the speech he delivered at a recent “America in Distress” rally where he spoke alongside the likes of Louie Gohmert, Rick Scarborough, and other Religious Right/Tea Party activists.

Cruz delivered a nearly twenty minute speech that was chock-full of standard Religious Right attacks on everything from abortion to the IRS all while he quoted Bible verses and called upon Christians to vote "for Christian principles, for biblical principles" in order "take every position and office from dog catcher all the way to the highest position in the land."

Cruz closed by declaring that "outside of the Bible," the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were the most important documents that had ever been written.

"And the reason is," Cruz explained, "they were written on the knees of the Framers.  The Framers were seeking divine revelation from God, that's why the Declaration and the Constitution have lasted over 230 years because they were divine revelation from God":
