Right-wing pseudo-historian David Barton appeared on the “Hagee Hotline” yesterday to promote the new edition of his discredited book on Thomas Jefferson and revealed what issues Jefferson would care about if he were alive today and voting in the upcoming presidential election. Amazingly, they just so happen to be the same issues that Barton himself cares about!
“When you look at your leaders, you look at religious beliefs,” Barton said. “And I don’t mean theological beliefs, I mean where are you with God. Because Jefferson is very clear, it’s written in stone on the Jefferson Memorial that the liberties of a nation are only secure as long as the people are convinced that those liberties come from God and that if you violate them, you will initiate God’s wrath. That’s Jefferson’s own statement. So that’s the first place; if you’ve got somebody who doesn’t really include God in what they do, then you’ve got a problem.”
Barton, who earlier this year openly stated that Jefferson would endorse Ted Cruz — which is pretty convenient considering that Barton is running a pro-Cruz super PAC — went on to claim that Jefferson would also be opposed to legal abortion, marriage equality, gay rights and even the income tax:
