One of the complaints that we hear occasionally from our readers or followers on Twitter is “why are you writing about Person X? Stop giving them publicity.” And generally our response is that we pay attention to these people because others within the Religious Right movement and Republicans in Congress pay attention to them and so it is important to understand their views and agenda.
Take “Dr. Chaps” Gordon Klingenschmitt, for instance. He is a disgraced former Navy Chaplain who brags of having successfully performed an exorcism on a lesbian soldier and who has stated again and again that demonic spirits are behind everything from abortion to gay marriage to ENDA to President Obama to Madonna. He openly states that gay should be discriminated against and warns that President Obama is trying to create an atheist army to attack Christians, urging Christians to sell their clothes if they have to in order to purchase weapons with which to defend themselves.
And today, on his “Pray In Jesus Name” program he interviewed, in person, Colorado Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn where the two prayed together for the State of Israel:
The interview itself was rather unremarkable, but the fact that a member of Congress would agree to appear on a program hosted by a demon-obsessed anti-gay exorcist is anything but.
