SBA List’s Marjorie Dannenfelser Claims Victory Over “Social Issues Truce”

Indiana Governor and potential presidential candidate Mitch Daniels has taken a pounding from the Religious Right, since June and even up to today, for suggesting that there should be a “truce” over social issues in order to increase attention to the country’s economic problems and debt. Marjorie Dannenfelser, the head of the fiercely anti-choice and poorly named group the Susan B. Anthony List, writes in the National Review that the debate over the next chairman of the Republican National Committee shows that GOP has decidedly rejected any moderation on social issues such as the right to choose and gay rights. She praises the conservative views of the RNC chair candidates and also points out that Daniels himself even backpedaled on his own call for a truce. But while Dannenfelser believes the GOP is united over the importance of social issues, CPAC’s growing crisis reflects otherwise.

The debate was completely devoid of the kind of fireworks that political commentators love. As SBA List and National Organization for Marriage Skype pre-interviews had suggested, each of the five candidates affirmed without hesitation their determination to support the Republican platform’s social-issue stands and to honor that support in the party’s programs, from recruiting candidates to buying ads to micro-targeting votes.

The aura of unity sorely exasperated professional cynics like the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank, who fumed for his readers, “The candidates were nearly dissent-free. Abortion? All opposed. Lower taxes? All in favor. Gay marriage? All opposed. Cutting spending? All in favor.” Jon Stewart found comedy in the comity.

Far from being a dull affair, however, the debate proved that the 2011 GOP has an unshakable core — and this core exercises real influence over the expressed convictions of the GOP’s national leaders. After all, only two short years ago, current RNC chairman Michael Steele — who was a board member of the pro-choice Republican Leadership Council — told GQ magazine that he believed abortion was an “individual choice.” Maria Cino, one of the four leading challengers he faced this week, served on the board of WISH List, a political action committee devoted solely to electing pro-choice Republican women.

At the debate, both Steele and Cino expressed profound pro-life conviction and commitment.

Governor Daniels, for his own part, made another attempt just after Christmas to explain away his “truce talk,” saying that his message was not directed at social conservatives but at the people “aggressively trying to change the definition of marriage.” His advice to the liberal activists: “Stand down for awhile” so the country can focus on its deepening fiscal crisis.

All of this is progress — and rapid progress at that. It’s also recognition that the conservative resurgence this past November involved a confluence, and not a divergence, of the social, fiscal, and national-security streams within the GOP. One week into the two-year cycle that leads to the reelection or defeat of Barack Obama, the GOP truce on internal disunity is turning out to be the one that really counts.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Was the vote that removed three Iowa Supreme Court Justices illegal?  That is what a new lawsuit is claiming.
  • The Supreme Court and Re. Bachmann's office both confirm that Antonin Scalia will be teaching the first Tea Party Caucus class to members of Congress.
  • It is pretty clear that Michael Steele is delusional if he thinks he has a chance of being re-elected Chair of the RNC.
  • Getting fired was pretty much the best thing that ever happened to Juan Williams.
  • Finally, time sure are changing at Liberty University:

Right Wing Leftovers

  • For some reason, Michael Steele thinks he has a chance of getting re-elected as Chairman of the RNC.  Good luck with that.
  • Want to spend ten minutes listening to Mike Huckabee talk about playing bass guitar?  Well, you are in luck.
  • Anti-choice activists have big plans for when Republicans take over state legislatures.
  • Focus on the Family is airing its interview with George W. Bush and it was surprisingly dull.
  • Finally, the American Decency Association reports that "shoppers are appalled at the eroticism portrayed" by Victoria's Secret, including "models are in sexually explicit poses [and some that] have promoted lesbianism."

Peterson Assures Conservatives It's Not Racist To Oppose Michael Steele

Jesse Lee Peterson of the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny has carved out a unique niche for himself as the far-right's arbiter of who/what is racist and who/what is not racist in today's political environment.

Thus, we see him declaring that "Barack Obama hates white people – especially white men" and claiming that he was elected by "by black racists and white guilty people" while defending the racist rants of people like Michael Richards and Duane Chapman.

Given Peterson's rather limited role, I was a little confused when he announced that he was launching a petition to defeat RNC Chair Michael Steele if he runs for re-election ... until I realized that he was doing so in order to reassure and provide cover to those who have "fears of being called 'racists'" for opposing Steele:

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND Action, a national 501 (c) (4) nonprofit organization created to educate, motivate, and rally Americans to greater involvement in the moral and political issues that threaten America, announced today that his group is launching a "Michael Steele Must Go!" petition drive. Rev. Peterson was one of the first Republicans to publicly call for embattled RNC Chairman Michael Steele to step down last January, citing his financial mismanagement and lack of conservative convictions to lead the committee.

"I am encouraging the national committee members to vote Michael Steele out in January," said Rev. Peterson. He added, "Steele has shown with words and by his actions that he is a liability to the party. Republicans cannot afford to go into the 2012 presidential election cycle with a weak and potentially corrupt committee head."

...

Rev. Peterson said, "I'm encouraging Republicans around the country to sign our petition and send a message to the voting committee members to get over their fears of being called 'racists' or any other apprehension they have and replace Steele with a qualified conservative Republican."

Peterson is hoping to get 10, 000 signatures for his petition.  He currently has 13:

Tea Party Nation Backs Hate Party Defender for RNC Chair

I know that Tea Party activists have been working hard to rebut the movement's reputation for racism, so I am sure that this decision will raise a few eyebrows:

One day after former Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska declined to throw her hat into the ring to become the Tea Party movement’s choice to lead the Republican National Committee, a leading Tea Party group threw its support behind Saul Anuzis of Michigan.

Judson Phillips, the founder of Tea Party Nation, announced in a statement on Tuesday that he was supporting Mr. Anuzis, a former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. Mr. Phillips said the leadership race was a critical “battle for the heart and soul” of the party.

“Capturing the chairmanship of the R.N.C. is important to the Tea Party movement,” Mr. Phillips wrote in a letter to the members of his group, one of the largest Tea Party organizations in the country. He added: “We need a conservative in as chair of the R.N.C. If not, we will end up with the same class of G.O.P. knuckleheads that blew it so badly in 2006 and 2008.”

And the reason it'll raise eyebrows is because of Anuzis' support of Kyle Bristow:

Saul Anuzis, leader of the Michigan GOP until last year, announced earlier this week that he would be challenging Michael Steele for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee (RNC). Anuzis had made a failed but significant run against Steele, the party’s first black leader, for the same post in 2009.

Writing about his hopes for the RNC, Anuzis, an avid Twitter user and blogger, especially emphasized his tech-savviness at online social networking as an asset for making electoral gains for the party. What Anuzis didn’t mention was the kind of contacts he cultivated offline in Michigan, in particular his vocal support of the right-wing extremist Kyle Bristow. Bristow led the Michigan State University campus branch of Young Americans For Freedom (MSU-YAF) and was so virulent in his politics that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) began listing it as a hate group in 2006. Bristow also served as a Republican precinct delegate.

Bristow’s MSU-YAF engaged in extensive racist activities. One of its first stunts was presenting a 13-point agenda that would have established a “Caucasian caucus” at MSU and, in turn, eliminated all student government representation for practically every other non-white, non-heterosexual, non-male or non-Christian student group at the university. Bristow was on record saying, “Homosexuality kills people almost to a degree worse than cigarettes. … these [pro-gay rights] groups are complicit with murder.” MSU-YAF sponsored a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day” contest, held a “Koran Desecration” competition, jokingly threatened to distribute smallpox-infested blankets to Native American students, and posted “Gays Spread AIDS” fliers across campus. Bristow’s YAF also brought several extremists to speak at the MSU campus, including Holocaust denier Nick Griffin, leader of the whites-only British National Party.

None of this seemed to bother Anuzis. “This [Bristow] is exactly the type of young kid we want out there,” Anuzis, then already the GOP state chair, said on a radio program in May 2007, the year after MSU-YAF’s more outrageous activities were made public. “I’ve known Kyle for years and I can tell you I have never heard him say a racist or bigoted or sexist thing, ever.” Just this past October, Anuzis’ Michigan GOP issued a press release attacking a Democratic candidate for secretary of state because she once interned at the SPLC, which the release said used “fear and intimidation” in its hate group listings.

Since receiving this outpouring of support from Anuzis, Bristow has graduated to the top ranks of the American radical right. Now a law student at the University of Toledo, Bristow recently self-published a novel, White Apocalypse, whose plot revolves around a series of violent revenge fantasies against Jewish professors, Latino and Native American activists. A major subplot ends in the bloody assassination of a character apparently based on an SPLC staffer. Several notable white supremacists and anti-Semites have endorsed the novel.

Just yesterday Anuzis was asked about his past support for Bristow and he again refused to disavow it.

LaBarbera: Mehlman Proves Gays Must Be Kept Out of GOP

Speaking of Religious Rigth activists being upset about the fact that Ken Mehlman has come out, you knew it was just a matter of time before Peter LaBarbera weighed in, which he is doing by blasting RNC Chair Michael Steele for saying he is happy for Mehlman and saying that this is proof of why gays must be kept out of the Republican Party:

Why couldn’t Mr. Steele just have kept quiet about this tragic revelation by which another sexually confused man seeks to rationalize his misbehavior (sin) by declaring homosexuality part of his inherent being? Nope, instead, like a three-year-old boy approaching a puddle, Steele just had to step in it. Pro-family writer Laurie Higgins of Illinois Family Institute observed:

So, Steele is “happy” that Mehlman is homosexual and/or happy that he is public about it? Why would he be happy for a friend embracing immoral and dangerous practices or for a friend being public about his embrace of immorality? And why does he respect him for his “difficult” decision to announce his immorality publicly? What fecklessness or cowardice Steele’s comment demonstrates. And this from the leader of the Republican Party…

...

So, we learn that Mehlman used his tremendous influence within the Republican Party to undermine the GOP’s clear platform language in support of preserving traditional marriage. All the while rank-and-file Republican Joes and Janes were assuming that the RNC leader was standing up for marriage between a man and a woman. Mr. Mehlman just proved why homosexual activism should be kept out of the Republican Party: it undermines core conservative values supported overwhelmingly by the GOP grassroots.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Burt Prelutsky used to really love America, but now he doesn't love it quite so much.
  • The Pro-Life Action League is launching its "2010 Face the Truth Tour" where they will travel around the Chicago area displaying "graphic pictures of aborted and unborn babies." Sounds like a fun way to spend the summer.
  • Nobody has really been able to get a good explanation of why Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell went to Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado and also met with James Dobson and why taxpayers had to foot the bill.
  • Regent University fights back against reports that it is struggling financially.
  • You know, hiring a consultant to round-up volunteers for your campaign and then having that consultant use participants from his c3 nonprofit organization to do volunteer work on said campaign does seem a little fishy.
  • Will Michael Steele still be head of the RNC next week?
  • Randall Terry is not happy with the tepid opposition to Elena Kagan:

Early Right Wing Leftovers

I'm going to be off until next Wednesday, starting this afternoon, so here is an early wrap-up of today's right-wing miscellany:

  • Jesse Lee Peterson declares Michael Steele to be a RINO for saying that Blacks do not have a reason to vote for the GOP.
  • Now Tom Tancredo going after the SPLC.
  • As is the Traditional Values Coalition's Andrea Lafferty, who also claims that PFAW is a "leftist hate group".
  • The Institute on Religion and Democracy is calling on churches to "confront Islamic law" here in America.
  • Finally, Tim Tebow was drafted by the Denver Broncos, which will make his future collaborations with Focus on the Family that much easier.

Perkins: Obama Has Been Our "Worst Nightmare" And a "Threat to America"

On the lastest episode of "The Brody File," the half-hour program featuring CNB's David Brody, Tony Perkins voiced his displeasure with Michael Steele and Bart Stupak, as well as his belief that President Obama is a "threat to America."

That statement came about after Brody asked Perkins if the Obama administration has turned out to be as bad as he expected.  Beginning at the 5:00 mark, Perkins claims that while he was never a fan of Obama's, he was "not hostile" to the administration initially ... but:

My worst nightmare has come to reality and more, in this administration. I was indifferent, going about our business, continuing to work on policy.  This administration, in my view, is a threat to America. What we see coming out of this administration, [not only] the hostility to traditional values, but the outright ignoring of the law.  We can have the theoretical debate over the Constitution when it came to the pushing of health care and the authority of the federal government, but even when it comes down to the Census, which we saw this week the Commerce Department basically telling homosexual couples out there to ignore federal law, to lie and put on your Census form that you're married if you feel like you're married. That's a violation of the 1996 Federal Defense of Marriage Act. What kind of government tells its people to lie on official forms?

Right Wing Leftovers

  • The Family Research Council is running radio ads targeting Rep. Bart Stupak.
  • Speaking of FRC, Tony Perkins has been invited to speak at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.
  • Sen. Jim DeMint is out to fill the Senate with as many ultra-right-wing senators as possible.
  • Concerned Women for America says their criticism of the RNC has brought in a lot of money for the organization.
  • On a related note, Sarah Palin says RNC Chair Michael Steele is "doing a great job."
  • Finally, behold the current state of the GOP:
  • Although the rally was for Bachmann, the lawmaker spoke first and introduced Palin. The two women were quick to share their mutual admiration for each other.

“She is so much one of us,” Bachmann said of Palin, “And as absolutely drop dead gorgeous this woman is on the outside, I’m here to testify that she is 20 times more beautiful on the inside.”

Palin responded in kind, recalling a meeting in Alaska: “I knew that we’d be buddies when I met her when she said, ‘Drill here, drill now.’ And then I replied, ‘Drill, baby, drill’ and then we both said, ‘You betcha!’”

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared April to be Confederate History Month.
  • Newt Gingrich says people need to stop attacking RNC Chair Michael Steele and instead focus on defeating Democrats.
  • J.D. Hayworth says his race against Sen. John McCain is pitting the Tea Partiers against Washington.
  • It looks like Team Huckabee is fracturing over a House race in Tennessee.
  • Peter LaBarbera says Augusto Pereira de Souza doesn't need asylum in the US because Brazil is just about the gayest place in the world.
  • Finally, I am very much looking forward to seeing "Casino Jack and the United States of Money":

Right Wing Round-Up

  • The RNC spent nearly $2,000 at a bondage-themed nightclub, the RNC says Chairman Michael Steele had nothing to do with it, and Concerned Women for America is outraged over the whole thing.
  • When the Minutemen urged activists to come to the border "locked, loaded, and ready," they apparently were alarmed when activists took that literally.
  • Americans United is distinctly unimpressed with Liberty Counsel's "Adopt a Liberal" cards.
  • Could you stand seven hours of Glenn Beck? Me either, but Will Bunch sat through Beck's recent rally.
  • CREW has filed a complaint with the FTC and IRS against Sean Hannity, his Freedom Concerts, the Freedom Alliance and Lt. Col. Oliver North for engaging in illegal and deceptive marketing practices.
  • Finally, if you ever needed proof that the GOP now works for Fox News, you need look no further.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • The Family Research Council is seeking signatures for a petition opposing efforts to end Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
  • Self-proclaimed King of the Tea Partiers Dick Armey tells Michael Steele that he has to gain their trust by proving his bona fides on fiscal issues.
  • Gov. Tim Pawlenty's PAC took in $1.3 million in its first few months.
  • Rep. Michele Bachmann has $1 million in the bank for her re-election bid.
  • Religious Right activists are holding a prayer vigil outside of CBS headquarters in support of Focus on the Family's anti-choice Super Bowl ad.
  • Finally, will Sarah Palin still be attending the National Tea Party Convention, even though all the other political leaders have dropped out?  You betcha.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • A collection of right-wing leaders give President Obama a resounding "F" for his first year in office.
  • Jesse Lee Peterson is demanding that Michael Steele resign from the RNC immediately.
  • The president of the Center for Arizona Policy is outraged at Cindy McCain's support for marriage equality.
  • Apparently, Roe's days are numbered.  Of course, they've been saying this for years.
  • According to FRC "the Left is preparing a desperate 120-day assault on your values to appease its culture-of-death" and so, of course, they need donations.
  • And finally, this has got to be the most moronic post-Brown analysis I have seen yet. And that is saying something.

Right Wing Round-Up

  • PFAW Statement: Guess Who's Coming to the McDonnell Inauguration.
  • Rev. Byron Williams, a member of PFAW Foundation’s African American Ministers in Action program, weighs in on the Pat Robertson saga.
  • As always, the Family Research Council has something useful and insightful to say when it comes to Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
  • Media Matters tracks the Interpol conspiracy theory through right-wing media.
  • If Michael Steele wasn't chairman of the RNC last summer, who was?
  • Finally, Rep. Steve King puts every other absurd response to the crisis in Haiti to shame with this statement: "Illegal immigrants from Haiti have no reason to fear deportation but if they are deported, Haiti is in great need of relief workers and many of them could be a big help to their fellow Haitians.”

Michael Steele: God Wanted Me to be RNC Chair

RNC Chair Michael Steele says that he is "the gift that keeps on giving" ... and that he is thanks to statements like this one her gave to CBN's David Brody explaining that God chose him to head the RNC:

A lot of people think that this is about me. It is not about me. I’m not defined by this job. When this job is over I will go back to doing something else but God, I really believe has placed me here for a reason because who else and why else would you do this unless there’s something inside of you that says right now you need to be here to do this and there’s going to be a lot of ugly that comes after you but if you stay true and you stay faithful to what brought you into this party and why you believe so much that what this administration is doing is wrong for America then I’m good. You can say whatever you want about me. You can write whatever you want about me. I sleep very well at night Washington. I really do because I know who has my back: the people of America and that is what we fight for everyday.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Big donors are not happy with RNC Chair Michael Steele and are withholding donations, to which he defiantly replies "fire me or shut up."
  • According to WND, Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Ga., is a Birther and "has written to President Obama asking him to prove his eligibility to hold the office of U.S. president."
  • The World Congress of Families says it is standing Don Schmierer, who was one of three Americans mentioned in the recent New York Times article against the anti-gay legislation in Uganda.
  • The Susan B. Anthony List, Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America, Eagle Forum and others are planning a press tour to pressure House Democrats to kill healthcare reform over the issue of abortion.
  • Finally, Rep. Mark Kirk insists that he is not gay.
