House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes, who has used his position to defend the Trump administration and attack its investigators, starts a new fundraising mailing with a quote from President Trump:
“Representative Devin Nunes, a man of tremendous courage and grit, may someday be recognized as a Great American Hero for what he has exposed and what he has had to endure.”
Nunes declares, “I stand for transparency and truth,” adding:
In this day and age, adherence to the truth is the only thing protecting our Constitution.
Sadly, there are all too many in Washington who disagree.
The biased, far-left media and Democratic leadership attack me every step of the way, calling me “dangerous”, “deliberately dishonest”, and even accusing me of being a Russian spy!
These attacks prove to me that we must continue exposing the scandals and coverups of the Obama administration.
Nunes hails from a deep red district in the Central Valley, California’s agricultural area around Fresno; he won by 35 percentage points in 2016. The Cook Political Report rates his seat Solid Republican. Earlier this year, a Bloomberg column suggested that Nunes had “become the face of Republican capitulation to a corrupt presidency” who could energize anti-Trump voters, but said it would be a long-shot campaign for Democratic challenger Andrew Janz.
In fact, Nunes has turned his aggressive defense of Trump—what the conservative Washington Examiner described as “quarterbacking President Trump’s counterattack against allegations of collusion with Russia in 2016—into a fundraising machine. According to Federal Election Commission reports, he had more than $5 million cash on hand as of mid-May.
But in his latest fundraising pitch to conservative activists, Nunes portrays himself as under siege:
National Democrats have descended upon California in an attempt to eliminate conservative warriors like you and me … They want to silence our voice and obliterate the work of Republican lawmakers. I’m standing up to them and fighting harder, speaking up for conservative patriots and protecting the legacy of Republican greats. …
I need friends like you on my team as the Left goes all-in to replace me this fall.
They’re targeting me because I dare to stand up for what’s right and true, for the America I believe in.
I’ll say it – the Democrats have come unhinged in their absolute hatred of President Trump and Republican lawmakers.
That’s why I’m reliant on conservative leaders like you to join my team and protect our House majority this fall. We can’t let people like Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders take control of Congress. …
