It’s no surprise that a movement that tries to pretend that Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a anti-tax, anti-choice social conservative is also after the legacy of civil rights hero Rosa Parks.
In fact, one prominent Ohio-based right-wing group is certain that Rosa Parks’ legacy was “making a politically incorrect choice and standing up for what she knew was right,” and as such presents an annual “Rosa Parks Citizen Activist Award” to a right-wing activist who emulates Parks by making a “politically incorrect choice”…against things such as LGBT equality or voting rights.
The winner of this year’s award from Citizens for Community Values, the Ohio affiliate of Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council, is an activist who “recently convinced his local school board to withdraw high school curriculum that discriminated against students of faith by requiring personal reflection essays supporting homosexuality.”
In 2011 and 2012, the group similarly honored the legacy of the late civil rights leader and NAACP organizer by presenting the award to activists who fought against local nondiscrimination ordinances that included protections for LGBT people.
And perhaps most truly honoring Rosa Parks’ legacy of political incorrectness, last year CCV gave the award to a “voter integrity” activist who supported Ohio’s 2012 cutback in weekend voting hours — a move that one state GOP official admitted was meant to suppress turnout among African Americans .
