Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), who resigned from Congress after being indicted, was all smiles when he appeared on Pat Robertson’s “700 Club” to talk about the election – even as he said he was “really frightened about what the Democrats are going to do to the president’s ability to fight the war on terror.” According to DeLay, the Republicans lost because they “played not to lose, and when you play not to lose, you’re gonna lose.”

DeLay also compared the war on terror to Iran-Contra:
But the Democrats aren’t stupid. They know that if they stick their head up, somebody’s going to knock it off. Because, here – Pat, they won an election without having an agenda, without telling anybody what they believe in, and completely distorting what the Republicans are trying to do and what the president’s going to do. They’re smart politicians. They know that the American people are not with them or what they believe. So they’re more interested in keeping power and being very subtle.
For instance, you were talking about the Sandinistas and Ortega in Nicaragua. Let’s go back and remember when the Democrats controlled the House. They undermined President Reagan’s ability to fight the communists in Nicaragua. You’re going to have the same thing going on here. They’re going to very subtly cut the funding off of our ability to fight the war on terror. And you won’t even notice it until it’s already done.
And he offered his characterization of the Democrats’ economic policy:
Anybody who voted for … a Democrat against the Republican incumbent just voted to increase their taxes by a minimum of $2,000 a year. Now that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but that’s what they did. To Democrats, their definition of middle income is probably around $25-30,000 a year and they don’t pay income taxes anyway. Their definition of rich is anybody who makes $50,000 or more.
Said Robertson, “Tom DeLay, we miss you up there. I think if your hand had not been evident in the last year, I think things might have come out a bit differently.”
