Mike Heath Resurfaces with Ron Paul in Iowa

Back in 2009, during the battle over marriage equality in Maine, Mike Heath of the Maine Family Policy Council was deeply involved in the fight, claiming that gay marriage was a warning sign "that our society is very sick indeed, and may be entering its final crisis" and was ever responsible for the state's bad weather:

Our crops are faring like our moods. The potato crop is blighted, and corn and fruit fields wither. In one historic building in Augusta, rain flooded the basement, as water from another source poured down through the ceiling and extinguished a century-old chandelier.

Few people would be bold enough to suggest the cause of the endless rain and gloom, that the moral climate in Maine has caused the sun to hide its face in shame.

Worse than the rain is the fact that Maine voted in homosexual “marriage.”

In May, our elected officials overturned a law of nature, and in its place paid honor to evil and unnatural practices. Our leaders allowed a cloud of error to hide the light of reason, and then the rain began. How fitting that this eclipse of human reason is mirrored by the disappearance of the sun!

What darkness equals the error of saying a family should be headed by two mothers or two fathers? What error equals saying that two women can be married, or two men? I am not saying that homosexuals or the gay rights movement are to blame for the weather. Far from it!

The fault lies with a refractory governor and Legislature who imposed an immoral law on our people.

Heath's embarrassing antics caused others in the marriage fight to cast him aside and, seeing the writing on the wall, Heath eventually resigned his position and announced that he was going to get involved in the manufacture and distribution of solar cookers in Africa.

That effort did not last very long and a few months later Heath was back in Maine, running the American Family Association's state affiliate and contemplating a short-lived run for governor.

After that, Heath fell off our radar ... until we learned today from Chris Moody that he is currently in charge of church outreach for Ron Paul's presidential campaign in Iowa:

Paul has brought several Christian conservatives onto his campaign in an ambitious effort to reach believers for his cause. Michael Heath, the campaign's Iowa director, previously worked for a New England-based group called the Christian Civic League of Maine that fought against adding sexual orientation to the state's Human Rights Act.

The national campaign has tasked Heath with leading church outreach in Iowa, where for months he has met with pastors and Christian congregations. "That's the biggest part of what I'm doing as state director," Heath told Yahoo News after a day of knocking on church doors with campaign literature. "Going to churches with a message in support of Dr. Paul's campaign that is very much faith-based and is also rooted in his commitment to a constitutionally defined limited federal government."

Maine Candidate Does Not Appreciate Being Linked to "Really Creepy" NOM Mailers

Brian Hale is a pastor and also the Republican candidate for House District 85 in Maine and has recently begun receiving some help from the National Organization for Marriage ... unwanted help, as it turns out, because Hale does not appreciate being associated with the anti-gay mailers that NOM is sending out:

The two-sided flier features a smiling family of four with a "Welcome to Maine, the way life should be" placard and a single photograph of Hale. Hale said the family in the picture is not even his family.

On the flip side of the flier is a photograph of [incumbent Rep. Jeffre] McCabe, with his e-mail address and two men in bow ties, arm-in-arm, appearing atop a wedding cake.

"Now it's time to let Jeff McCabe know we don't agree with his decision to back same-sex marriage," the flier reads.

...

Hale says he supports traditional marriage, meaning a union between a man and a woman, but said his campaign did not send the fliers.

"I think this is tasteless; I'm not enjoying this," Hale said Monday. "I think this is an incidence of friendly fire -- someone thought they were helping me and they're not. I'm running as a fiscal conservative -- that's what I'm going around talking to people about. I'm not running an anti-gay campaign. The first time that I heard anything about this or its contents is when I pulled it out of my mailbox."

Hale said he showed the flier to his wife and daughters and they agreed that it was inappropriate. His 16-year-old daughter Hanna called it "really creepy," he said.

"People are thinking I am the one who put this out," Hale said. "I can see how one might understand that -- it has my photo on it and my e-mail address, both of which I believe were pulled off the Internet. People are seeing this and saying, 'Pastor Hale is a homophobe' -- and I'm not."

...

Hale said his campaign literature has the state-mandated "paid for and authorized by the committee to elect Brian Hale," while the fliers do not. The return address on the fliers is for the National Organization for Marriage, based in Washington D.C., a group that opposes same-sex marriage.

So Much For the "Change of Tone" At The Maine Family Policy Council

It was just last week that we reported that following the departure of Mike Heath from the Maine Family Policy Council, the organization had announced a new interim president and executive director who had as his mission undoing all of the embarrassment Heath had caused the organization with his ridiculous statements.

Well, that is going to be kind of hard if, as Jeremy notes, the organization keep writing things like this about how "Immorality is Worse than BP Oil Spill":

Those who viewed the environmental damage — Christians and non-believers alike — called the damage “apocalyptic.” Our culture is awash in a flood of impurity of another kind, and that is the loosening of the rules intended to conserve and perpetuate life.

The shining whiteness of the bridal gown, symbolizing purity and the power that purity conveys, has been stained — or smudged, if you will — by pornography, sex before marriage, marital infidelity, divorce, abortion and, now, so-called marriages between people of the same sex.

...

We here in Maine have been spared the effects of many recent natural or man-made calamities. But we should not allow our presumed immunity from disaster to divert our attention from the many moral problems that confront us. If these problems are not cured, they will prove worse than any catastrophic oil spill.

We count among these problems the indecent march in Farmington, the increasing number of so-called Gentlemen’s Clubs, the dangerous disrespect for women in the media and the incessant attacks on the natural family by government and advocates of same-sex marriage.

All these are violations of natural law, and as result, poison the life of society at its root. Much good can come of the oil spill in the Gulf, if the natural calamity reminds us to restore purity and innocence to America. Those in positions of authority, especially those who instruct the next generation, must work to preserve morality and right order in society.

They must stop justifying harmful and immoral actions by a specious appeal to freedom. If they do not, our continued existence as a nation will be imperiled, just as surely as the growing tide of oil imperils life in the Gulf.

With Heath Gone, Maine Family Policy Council Seeks To Change Tone and Reputation

Last year, Mike Heath of the Maine Family Policy Council found himself being sidelined in the Religious Right's battle against gay marriage in the state due to his penchant for saying ridiculous things.

As such, he announced that he was leaving the organization in order to go to Africa to distribute solar cookers, only to return a few months later as head of the American Family Association affiliate in Maine and launch a shockingly short bid for Governor.

And now that Heath has moved on, so too can the Maine Family Policy Council, which has announced a new interim president and executive director who sees his mission as undoing all of the embarrassment Heath caused the organization and changing its reputation:

The Christian Civic League of Maine, recently renamed the Maine Family Policy Council, has announced a new interim president and executive director. Long affiliated with the Bangor Christian School, Carroll Conley of Glenburn will succeed Michael Heath of China, who stepped down last fall after nearly 20 years with the League. Conley believes it's time the organization changed its tone.

...

"I've had a long interest and connection with the Christian Civic League and the League having a need for leadership," Conley says. He says he'd like to change the reputation of the organization, which, under Michael Heath, has been a strong, and often controversial voice in state politics, working hard to ban same-sex marriage in Maine.

"There definitely needs to be a change of tone with the League," Conley says. "What we've got to make sure that we do as folks that have anything attached 'Christian' to it, no matter how controversial it gets or no matter how passionate people may feel about something, that you have that weight and that responsibility to do it in a way that's consistent with those values -- not just the morality of the issue but in areas of respect and dissent."

...

Conley says he hopes to strike a balance between the Council's Christian social policies and a tolerance for opposing ideas, especially on the issue of abortion. He says the organization must show compassion toward those who are pro-choice.

Maine's Mike Heath Longs For the Days of "Christianity, Charity and Shared National Values"

Given that Mike Heath of the American Family Association of Maine has made a career out of attacking gays and claiming that marriage equality causes graffiti, vandalism, and crop failure, you'll have to forgive me if I don't buy the "can't we all just get along" vibe of this op-ed he published in the Portland Press Herald, especially considering that buried beneath his lament for our national "memory loss" is a not-so-subtle longing for the good ol' days when right-wing Christian values dominated and before gays got all uppity and started demanding equality:

Memory loss has dire consequences for nations as well. Long gone is America's sense of unity and purpose. A society that inherited the maxim "In unity is strength" is now told that diversity is the preeminent goal of its civilization.

The words "union" and "united" once inspired men from Maine to fight on the battlefields of Gettysburg and Bull Run. Today the word "union" calls to mind something vastly different.

...

A loss of historical memory results in a confusion in values. An appeal to diversity manifests itself in the political realm as a proliferation of competing and contradictory ideas. Moral relativism undermines the values the West has held for centuries. Post-modernism takes an even more extreme position, and denies the possibility that any truth can exist at all.

Certain outcomes are predictable for such a divided and confused society. The inability to share a common frame of reference impairs communication among groups. Where communication fails, there is opposition.

And where there is opposition, citizens will impute the wrong motives to political opponents. Extreme skepticism in the realm of politics turns out to be a very poor substitute for Christianity, charity and shared national values.

...

The task that lies before us is to unite all our people -- be they left or right, Republican or Democrat -- on the basis of shared ethical values ... We can indeed have a civilization which promotes community over self-interest, respect for ethical values over unbridled greed, health over indulgence, beauty over chaos. The day will come when America is once again renowned for its houses of worship, its common values, its communal festivals, its respect for women and family!

Unity will be restored; and the spirit of lawlessness and rebellion will be forgotten -- a storm in the night, followed by a clear, bright morning.

It is well-said that a society that obeys God's laws comes to look like heaven. This, I predict, will be the future of America, and it is the goal toward which we must all strive.

So Much For That - Mike Heath Drops Gov. Bid

Just yesterday we noted that the American Family Association of New England's Mike Heath had registered to run for Governor of Maine.

Now, just one day later, he's dropping out:

Heath had signed up to run as an independent, which means he would have had to gather 4,000 signatures by June 1. On Wednesday, he released a statement posted on the WCSH-TV Web site.

"On Monday, I decided I would consider becoming a candidate for governor of Maine if I could gather the 4,000 required signatures by June 1. While I would enjoy running, and I'd be honored to serve if elected, I quickly discovered that even the task of circulating petitions is beyond my capacity at this point in my life."

...

"I must devote myself wholly to the important work of the American Family Association of New England," he said in Wednesday's statement. "I am most excited about our new work here in Maine.

"The decision to put my name out as a potential candidate is wholly mine. I regret any inconvenience this may have caused anyone."

For Heath, "even the task of circulating petitions is beyond my capacity at this point in my life"?

So how is he going to carry out his mission to "fight against the gay-rights lobby" if he's not even capable of circulating petitions?

The AFA has got to be really pleased with its decision to put him in charge of their state affiliate right about now.

Mike Heath Files To Run for Governor

It was just a few weeks ago that we were noting that Mike Heath, formerly of the Maine Family Policy Council, had suddenly reappeared on the scene as the head of the American Family Association's affiliate in Maine.

During the fight over marriage in Maine, Heath had repeatedly embarrassed the right-wing effort by claiming that gay marriage leads to things like graffiti, vandalism, and crop failure and eventually found himself cast aside by the movement entirely.  As a result, he resigned his position as the head of the Maine Family Policy Council, announcing that it was time for him to do something else with his life and declaring that he was going to get involved in the manufacture and distribution of solar cookers in Africa.

Then he disappeared for several month, only to reemerge in March, leading the state's AFA affiliate.

And now, via Pam's House Blend, we see that Heath has even bigger plans

Michael Heath, former executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, has registered with the state ethics commission as a gubernatorial candidate.

Heath, a resident of China, is listed as an unenrolled candidate, which means he has until June 1 to get at least 4,000 signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

Heath recently announced the formation of a group called the American Family Association of Maine. At the time, he said he was "re-entering public life to continue the fight against the gay-rights lobby."

Heath spent 15 years working for the Christian Civic League, and became its executive director in 1994. He twice led people's veto efforts to overturn gay-rights laws.

Heath was not a visible part of last year's fight over same-sex marriage, which ended with voters repealing a state law legalizing it. He announced his resignation in September from the civic league, which is now called the Maine Family Policy Council.

There are now 24 people running for governor. Of those, 12 are Democrats or Republicans who will compete in the June 8 primary for the right to represent their parties on the November ballot. For the other 12, June 1 is the deadline to determine who among them will qualify to compete in November.

Maine's Mike Heath Returns As Head of a New AFA Affiliate

Last year, during the battle over marriage equality in Maine, Mike Heath of the Maine Family Policy Council was busy embarrassing the right-wing effort by claiming that gay marriage leads to things like graffiti, vandalism, and crop failure.

Heath soon found himself cast aside by the movement and, seeing the writing on the wall, resigned his position as the head of the Maine Family Policy Council, announcing that it was time for him to do something else with his life and that he was going to get involved in the manufacture and distribution of solar cookers in Africa.

When, just two months later, Heath showed up on Peter LaBarbera's "Americans for Truth" website to declare that "Homosexuality is a sickness. It’s a sin. We need to stop putting up with it," it was pretty clear that Heath had no real intention of moving on from his professional anti-gay activism ... which is why Jeremy Hooper's discovery that Heath has now launched an American Family Association affiliate in Maine comes as no surprise:

In February of 2010, Mike Heath received approval from the American Family Association in Tupelo, Mississippi to create their affiliate here in Maine. Heath is no stranger to the people of Maine. As Maine's most well-known advocate for family values, Heath unapologetically defends Christianity and Western Civilization. He is deeply concerned with the corrosive effects of the sexual revolution on Maine culture. His signature issue is, and will be for some time, so-called "gay rights." The people of Maine are renowned for choosing common sense over political correctness. They can easily understand why AFA of Maine advocates removing the phrase "sexual orientation" from Maine's laws and regulations. "Sexual orientation" is a term which may have limited value in personal therapy, but the phrase only causes confusion when applied to law and politics. Heath is adamant that sex outside of marriage is immoral and shameful. Society upholds the institution of marriage to protect men, women, and children. Sexual activity is only one small part of marriage; and homosexuality does violence to that institution. AFA of Maine welcomes support from everyone who wants to take a stand for decency, morality, marriage, and the family. Individuals and organizations interested in working with us should email msheath04358@gmail.com.

Since it is impossible for anyone to ever be too extreme for the AFA, adding Heath to their roster seems like a perfect match.

Cass: "Radical Homosexual ... Will Destroy Anyone That Comes Between Them and Their Agenda"

The newly mustache-less Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission has taken up the case of Larry Grard, who claims he lost his job due to anti-Christian bigotry (though that is disputed by his former employer,) and immediately needs $5,000 to launch a campaign to get Grard his job back, according to a recent CADC email alert:

Radical homosexual activists are not playing games. They will destroy anyone that comes between them and their agenda. But the time has come for Christians to fight back and support those who courageously take a stand for righteousness.

Help us defend Christians like Larry from the attacks of radical homosexual activists. Click below to donate!

Please help me fight and win this battle. Maine Today must reinstate Larry and Lisa. We must defend Larry's right to free speech and his right to express his religious point of view. It is vital that we not neglect our wounded in the battle for the soul of America.

Help CADC stand up for Larry. I need at least $5,000.00 by February 15th to cover all the expenses of this campaign. Can you please help?

Imagine what it would be like to have your career unjustly destroyed at age 59 after 19 years of hard work for simply defending God's institution of marriage. Wouldn't you want someone to help fight to get your job back?

Let's be there for Larry and his family! Please send you best gift today!

We must expose the unfruitful deeds of wickedness! (Eph. 5:11)

Here's how:

First, we need to let Maine Today know that Christians will not stand by while our brother and sister are unjustly defamed, discriminated against, and persecuted for merely expressing their support of biblical family values.

We will demand that the newspaper re-instate Larry and his wife and reimburse them for all their unpaid wages. If they will not, I will encourage other pro-family leaders to join me in this stand for Larry. It's the least we can do for someone who stood up for what's right.

In addition, if Maine Today refuses to do the right thing, we will contact their advertisers. We will let them know that we intend to work with local churches to organize a boycott against any business that continues to support Maine Today with their advertising dollars (a strategy we have used successfully in other communities).

Maine Today caved into pressure from homosexual activists and fired Larry and Lisa. Now it's time for them to correct their persecution of this couple. If they refuse, we will make sure they don't get rewarded with adverting from local businesses. I assure you ... that will get their attention.

It's time to draw a line in the sand. We cannot allow radical homosexual activists to continue to destroy people who stand against their ungodly agenda. If we don't stop them now, it won't be long before no one will be able to resist them.

Gallagher: The People Of Maine Know A Chicken Is Not a Duck

Maggie Gallagher says that those who fought for marriage equality in Maine wasted their time and money because the voters in the state were smart enough to know that it is gays who are the real bigots and haters:

The $4 million spent to pass gay marriage in Maine was wasted. Even Americans in liberal states do not believe that two guys pledged to a gay union are a marriage. Politicians can pass a bill saying a chicken is a duck and that doesn't make it true. Truth matters.

Americans have a great deal of goodwill toward gay people as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. Most of us do not want to hurt them or hate them or interfere with anyone's legitimate rights to live as they choose. But we do not believe gay marriage is a civil right; we think it is a civil wrong. And we do not appreciate the increasingly intense efforts to punish people who disagree with gay marriage as if we were racists, bigots, discriminators or haters.

Case in point: Don Mendell, a school guidance counselor at Nokomis Regional High School in Maine, now faces ethics complaints for his decision to appear in a TV ad for the Yes on One campaign in the closing days of the contest. If substantiated, the ethics complaint could lead the government to yank his license as a social worker and, therefore, threaten his livelihood. What kind of movement spurs people to act like this? Meanwhile, a teacher of the year who campaigned for gay marriage faces no such threat to her livelihood. Is gay marriage really about love and tolerance for all?

The people of Maine are certainly entitled to wonder.
