'Non-Political' Prayer Breakfast Welcomes Pastor Who Prays for Obama's Death

As RWW reported two weeks ago, organizers of the official-sounding-but-not-remotely-official Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast hoped that Rep. Michele Bachmann, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Sen. Roy Blunt, and other big names would join them, along with birther extremist Joseph Farah.  After some embarrassing back-and-forth about Farah’s participation, he didn’t show up. Neither did Bachmann, Cantor, Blunt or Pat Robertson, though Robertson, Farah, and Pat Boone sent messages that were read out loud. People who did show up representing foreign embassies may have been duped by the name of event into thinking they were attending something connected to the actual inauguration.

Organizers insisted that the event had no political agenda, that it was called simply to pray for President Obama and the nation. But there was plenty of politics.  Speakers included Marjorie Dannenfelser of the anti-choice Susan B. Anthony List.  Sid Roth, a Messianic Jew and radio host, said there were three sins that cause a land to "vomit out" its people: child sacrifice (abortion), homosexuality, and the “tipping point” sin of dividing up the land of Israel.  Stewart Greenleaf, a Pennsylvania state senator, said he could make an argument for Israel’s right to disputed lands based on history, but that the best argument is that “the Lord gave Israel that land.”

Even Pastor Wiley Drake – infamous for his devotion to “imprecatory prayers” against his political opponents, and his admission that he regularly prays for President Obama’s death, was recognized, applauded, and called up to the stage.

The interminable event – four hours and counting when I left – felt like a disorganized muddle. It started with an altar call and communion -- “Let’s sing about the blood of Jesus for a moment….who has the chuppah?” -- and included prayers from Native American Christians, a delegation from Newtown, repentance for anti-Semitism, and some marketing for a new American Christian flag. “We may not be as formal” as other events, said one speaker, “but I bet we love God more.”

The Chaplain of the House of Representatives, Patrick Conroy, did briefly lend an air of officialdom. Perhaps with the pre-event controversy in mind, Conroy led a prayer for President Obama and reminded attendees pointedly that Obama was reelected by a clear majority of Americans. Former Democratic Rep. Diane Watson brought a bit of bipartisanship, and while her belief that President Obama has been anointed for our time got a smattering of affirmation from Obama supporters in attendance, that was a minority view, to put it lightly.

Keynoter Jonathan Cahn decried the withdrawal of Rev. Louie Giglio from the inaugural program over anti-gay-rights comments, portraying it as evidence of anti-Christian persecution: “…it is a new America in which one can be banned from the public square simply for believing the Bible, where profanity is treated as holy, and the holy is profane. A new America where the Bible is treated as contraband and nativity scenes are seen as dangerous.”

Cahn’s overall message is that America is facing the judgment of God the way ancient Israel did when it stopped following God’s orders.  Cahn heads Beth Israel Worship Center, which bills itself the largest Messianic congregation in the world. He believes that the 9-11 attacks were a “wake-up call” from God, who lifted divine protection from America as a warning. Since the country did not turn back to God,  says Cahn, God slammed us with financial collapse. He warned President Obama of judgment “if you utter the words so help me God, and you should in any way take part in leading a nation farther away from God….”

Cahn’s speech was essentially a summary of the argument in his book, “The Harbinger,” which purports to connect the inauguration of George Washington, 9-11, and more through his revelations about the “ancient mysteries.”

“There exists an ancient mystery that lies beyond everything from 9-11 to the collapse of the American economy, a mystery so precise that it actually reveals the actions of American leaders before they take them, the exact words of American leaders before they speak them, a mystery so exact that it gives the actual dates even the hours of some of the most dramatic days in recent history.”

Cahn’s keynote ended with a rousing call against “political correctness” and compromise, saying “the shadow of judgment is upon us” and urging, “It’s time to be strong! It’s time to be bold! It’s time to be radical!” as shouts and shofar-blowing thundered through the room.

Right Wing Leftovers - 1/2/13

  • We're sure the Religious Right will be up in arms over reports that House Speaker John Boehner told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to "go f— yourself!"
  • Wiley Drake is starting an "imprecatory prayer meeting to be held each Wednesday."
  • WND names Michele Bachmann its "Woman of the Year."
  • Scott Lively's "Top 10 Heroes" of 2012 offers a pretty solid list of the most vehemently anti-gay activists operating today.
  • Rick Green cannot believe what is happening to America: "Over the last two months, we've seen an un-informed, Constitutionally ignorant part of our country re-elect a President who glorifies everything that is wrong with America today."
  • Finally, it seems that Liberty Counsel is now in the business of producing rap videos:

Drake Contemplates Leading Tea Party-Like Insurgency Against Southern Baptist Convention

Yesterday we noted that Wiley Drake was taking a break from praying for President Obama's death to contemplate running for the Presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention, despite the fact that the SBC that they want nothing to do with him because he is crackpot.

Of course, that just further proves Drake's point that the SBC needs to be shaken up by a Tea Party-like insurgency ... and he is just the man to lead it:

In a telephone interview Jan. 25, Drake said he sees things going on today in convention life that are "sort of a repeat" of the situation that existed prior to the "conservative resurgence" grassroots movement that redirected the denomination beginning in 1979.

Drake said he also sees parallels in the Tea Party movement in secular politics. "People are just saying, 'We're tired of you guys up there running things and not asking us, and even if you do ask us, you are not paying any attention.'"

Drake said he has heard similar things from fellow pastors. "I'm hearing people say, 'I'm not going to convention any more. Nobody listens. They just ramrod it. They run it through.' That concerns me, because I'm a convention kind of guy."

Drake says he hasn't been particularly involved in denominational life in the last few years because nobody would listen to him but he has been fasting and praying and believes that God wants him to run for SBC president and get "back in the battle":

Drake said he has been praying and fasting for about a month and believes the Lord is leading him to allow his nomination, but that he sent out his press release seeking prayer and counsel because: "I don't want it to be a Wiley thing. I want it to be a God thing."

"I believe God wants me to do it, but I want to hear from the family," he said. "I am honestly seeking not only prayer but counsel."

Either way, Drake said it is time for him to get re-involved in Baptist life.

"I'll be back in the swing of things, whether I run or not," he said. "I'm going to do what I can to bring Southern Baptists back to all the things that we used to do."

"I am back in the battle," Drake said. "I am going to fight. I figure if I could fight from the top down it would be easier, but if not I will fight from the bottom up."

Drake Contemplates Running for President of Southern Baptist Convention

In 2007-2008, Wiley Drake served as Second Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention ... but once President Obama was elected and Drake started praying for his death and the deaths of  Democratic members of Congress, the Southern Baptist Convention was quick to distance itself from Drake:

A Southern Baptist Convention spokesman said June 4 that a former official who is praying for the death of President Obama is out of the denomination's mainstream.

Roger "Sing" Oldham, vice president for convention relations with the SBC Executive Committee, said he believes most Southern Baptists are committed to praying for the well-being of the president as instructed in Scripture.

...

Oldham told Associated Baptist Press that Drake is not a spokesman for the Southern Baptist Convention and his comments do not reflect the actions, resolutions or positions of the denomination.

But just because the SBC apparently doesn't want to have anything to do with Drake, that is not stopping Drake from contemplating making a run for President of the SBC

As most of you know I have served the Lord Jesus through my relationship with the denomination, The Southern Baptist Convention, since 1965. It was my privilege in 2007/2008 to be elected as Second Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention.

My question and request for counsel is simply this, "Should I allow my nomination for the position of President of The Southern Baptist Convention in June 2011, and make a run for this position?"

In my opinion we have left our traditional BIBLICAL positions, and become a large group being led by a small group of leaders who are out of touch with what the average Southern Baptist desires for our ministry under the leadership of The Holy Ghost.

Wiley Drake Focuses His Imprecatory Prayers On Fred Phelps

Wiley Drake has become notorious in recent years for praying for the death of President Obama, hundreds of members of Congress, and pretty much everyone who doesn't share his radical agenda ... and now he is turning his imprecatory prayers against Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church because they are, get this, "an embarrassment to Bible believing Pro-Life and Pro-Family Christians":

Christians from Around the World to Discuss Imprecatory Prayer for Westboro Baptist and Pastor Fred Phelps

Pastor Wiley Drake will host an open discussion with members of the body of Christ, from around the world, as to what to do about people he sees as an embarrassment to Bible believing Pro-Life and Pro-Family Christians, especially for those who are proud to be called Baptist.

Pastor Drake states, "We will have an OPEN prayer meeting/discussion to allow everyone to share their ideas and prayers."

If you are interested in listening to Drake’s discussion on how best to pray for the death of Phelps and his Westboro flock, you can call in tomorrow at noon Eastern time

Only Wiley Drake Can Make Prayer Sound Like a Threat

Normally, when someone announces that they will be praying for you, your first inclination is not to take that as some sort of a threat.

But when that person is Wiley Drake ...

In a joint effort the two prayer teams sent an Open Letter to Senators to remind them that their prayer warriors would be praying and holding the Senators to account to righteousness.

Both these teams have been in existence since the turn of the century.

Pastor Drake said that these daily prayers, praying for each Senator by their full name, has already started.

...

The pastor also said that the BIBLE would be the standard used to determine how the Senators are doing.

The teams said that the names would also be quoted and prayed for on the two shows hosted by pastor Wiley Drake.

Given that Drake is notorious for praying for the death of President Obama, hundreds of members of Congress, and pretty much everyone who doesn't share his radical agenda, it is worth asking just what Drake will be praying for when he busy "praying for each Senator by their full name."

Drake Opposed CA Mosque Because He Doesn't Want Terrorist Pagans In His Back Yard (CORRECTION)

This summer we noted that Tea Partiers and anti-Islam activists were opposing the construction of a proposed Islam Center in Temecula, California and were even using dogs in order to intimidate worshipers because "Muslims hate dogs."

Well, the controversy over the center continues and last night the Temecula Planning Commission voted 5-0 to approve construction of the center after a five-and-a-half hour public hearing during which supporters were told to "go back to Israel" ... and even Wiley Drake weighed in:

The mosque's backers included Yosef Khen, who said he was born in Israel and learned in school that America had a tradition of religious tolerance.

To the mosque's critics, he said: "You're doing damage not to the Islamic people. You're doing damage to yourself."

One person shouted: "Go back to Israel!"

...

Mosque critic Wiley Drake said Sept. 11 stemmed from the activity of mosques. And John Trautman said Muslims "are not only our enemy but pagans. Why would we want them in our backyard?"

Drake is, of course, the Alan Keyes VP/Birther who is actively praying for God to kill President Obama.

CORRECTION: I obviously misread this and mistakenly attributed the Trautman quote to Drake. My apologies for the error.

  • Finally, the quote of the day from Russell Moore, dean of the School of Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary: "There's really nothing conservative -- and certainly nothing evangelical -- about a laissez-faire view of a lack of government regulation, because we, as Christians, believe in sin. That means if people are sinful, if all of us are sinful, then all of us have to have accountability -- and that includes corporations. Simply trusting corporations to go about their business without polluting the water streams and without destroying ecosystems is really a naive and utopian view of human nature. It's not a Christian view of human nature."

Wiley Drake Pretty Much Wants Everyone To Die

Last night Alan Colmes had Wiley Drake on his program to discuss his latest call to imprecatory prayer against all 219 members of the House that voted for health care reform.

While it started out with Drake camping it up by playing songs and recalling his days in the rodeo, it quickly took a turn toward the morbidly absurd as Drake admitted that he does, in fact, want every member of Congress who voted for this legislation to die and then even promised Colmes that his name would be added to Drake's imprecatory prayer death list for his support of the legislation and the Representatives who passed it.

Colmes logically asked if that meant that Drake was therefore praying that everyone who supports this bill or these legislators should also die, to which Drake stated that since he didn't know all the names of those millions of people he couldn't offer such a prayer, but asserted that if he did know their names, he most certainly would pray for them to die as well.

Drake's position is that he is not personally causing anyone to die, as that is God's decision; he is merely fulfilling his obligation to engage in imprecatory prayer in order to "pray vengeance upon the enemies of God" and America:

Wiley Drake Prays for the Deaths of 219 Democratic Members on Congress

Via Alan Colmes we learn that Wiley Drake has advanced from minor leagues of praying for the death of individuals like President Obama to the big leagues of praying for the wholesale death of all 219 members of the House of Representatives who voted for health care reform:

Orange Country Pastor Wiley Drake fired off an email to his supporters this morning, telling them that all 219 Democrats have been placed on the “imprecatory prayer list.” “We’ll remember in November and pray Psalms 109 while waiting,” he urged, before listing each offending congressman by name in “Satan’s domain in Washington D.C.”

...

In recent weeks, Drake has stepped up his calls to stop the health-care bill through the death prayer, offered as part of a morning “Telephonic Imprecatory Prayer Team" conference call. After Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s wife and daughter were seriously injured in a car crash this month, Drake wrote “Since God almost let family members die, maybe Mr. Reid sees Imprecatory Prayer in a different light, ya think??”

In this newest email, Drake wrote “It is time for the saints to step up and get back in the war, between good and evil. See what God says the saints are to do in this battle.” He then quotes from Psalm 149:7 “To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people.”

Does Concerned Women For America Know Lisa Miller's Whereabouts?

A few weeks ago I noted how Lisa Miller's lawyers at Liberty Counsel and her supporters at the Protect Isabella Coalition were quietly trying to wash their hands of her after she kidnapped her daughter and disappeared.

Well, it looks like these right-wing activists are still active in supporting her, as they gathered for a prayer rally in Virginia last week during the court hearing at an event which featured a briefing from Mat Staver and the participation of Wiley Drake:

Concerned Women for America (CWA) of Virginia joined the Protect Isabella Coalition and other conservatives, who traveled from as far away as Suffolk, Harrisonburg, and Roanoke, and as near as Bedford and Lynchburg, at the Bedford County Courthouse on February 17, to support Lisa Miller and her daughter, Isabella, in prayer.

While we were disappointed not to be allowed in the courtroom — the judge had honored an ACLU request to deny access to the public— it was a privilege to join Pastor Wiley Drake of Buena Park, California, and others across the country on the Telephonic Prayer Line to pray during the court proceedings.

Mat Staver, chief attorney for Liberty Counsel, briefed our group before and after the hearing. The opposition wanted the Virginia court to find Lisa in contempt of court for failing to follow a Vermont court’s order to relinquish custody of her daughter, Isabella, to Janet Jenkins, who was Lisa’s homosexual companion before Lisa’s conversion to Christianity. It should be noted that Miss Jenkins is a Vermont resident who has no biological ties to Isabella and has never sought to adopt her, but has been awarded full custody by a Vermont court merely on the basis of Lisa and Miss Jenkins’ brief “civil union.”

Judge Harrison did not issue an order for Lisa's arrest, because she cannot be found for papers to be served. The judge also denied Janet Jenkins the opportunity to testify by phone, because there was no one present in Vermont to swear her in as a witness.

The next hearing on this case is tentatively scheduled for May 19, 2010. Please continue to pray for the three judges of the Appellate Court of Virginia; pray that their decision will put up a firewall between the laws of Vermont and Virginia to protect Isabella and allow Lisa to return to her home state.

This post contains a relatively important revelation: everybody who has been involved in this case insists that they have no idea where Lisa Miller has gone and that they have had no contact with her since she disappeared ... so why is CWA and the Protect Isabella Coalition praying that she will be allowed to "return to her home state"?

That suggests that she is not in Virginia at the moment ... and how would these supporters know that unless they know where Miller actually is

So here is a simple question: Does CWA or the Protect Isabella Coalition know Miller's whereabouts?  If so, why aren't they informing the authorities?  Are these groups protecting and hiding Miller as she run from the law and violates her court orders?

Wiley Drake Hails Rep. Murtha's Death

When Dr. George Tiller was murdered in church, Wiley Drake declared it an answer to his prayers ... and he is now saying that same thing about the passing of Rep. John Murtha

Southern Baptist Pastor Wiley Drake of Buena Park sent out an email Monday night, saying that perhaps his prayers had been answered with the death of Rep. John Murtha yesterday.

“Maybe God took him out,” Drake wrote. “Maybe God Answered our IMPRECATORY prayer that we prayed every 30 days.”

The Pennsylvania congressman, a decorated former Marine who fiercely opposed the Iraq war, died at the age of 77 after complications from gallbladder surgery.

I asked Drake if his statements weren’t distasteful, particularly coming immediately after Murtha’s death. He said that as a Christian, he didn’t buy into the sentiment of not speaking ill of the dead.

“It’s not distasteful to pray the word of God and include somebody’s name,” he said. “I didn’t celebrate his death. I said maybe it was God’s answer to our imprecatory prayer.”

Drake regularly asks his “prayer warriors” to participate in prayer targeting “unrighteous” politicians. He typically uses Psalms 109, including these passages including in his Monday email: “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” And, “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”

...

Drake said he and his prayer warriors had been praying for Murtha’s death for four or five months. Among other things, Drake said Murtha’s use of profanity and his use of God’s name in vain. Beside praying for the death of specific politicians, he said they pray for “politicians in general who are taking unrighteous stands.”

You may recall that last year Drake said he was also praying for President Obama's death, but then backed off until Obama can be tried and imprisoned for treason.

Drake Sides With Robertson While Satan Reigns Over Haiti

In addition to Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission and Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, we can now add Wiley Drake to the list of those siding with Pat Robertson in the wake of his Haiti "swore a pact to the Devil" comments:

Evangelist broadcaster Pat Robertson attracted criticism last week when he said that Haiti was “cursed” because it made “a pact with the devil.” But that hasn’t stopped Buena Park Pastor Wiley Drake, a Southern Baptist, from saying he shares Robertson’s view.

“I don’t know that God brought that earthquake or not,” Drake said. However, the misfortunes of the country - including its extreme poverty, ongoing political turmoil and frequent natural disasters - could be repercussions of the alleged deal with Satan, he said.

...

“They said, ‘If you’ll help us, we’ll dedicated ourselves and our government to Satan,’” said Drake ... While the devil pact was set to expire in 2004, then-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide approved Voodoo as an officially recognized religion, renewing the deal, according to Drake associate David Fox, a missionary in Haiti. However, the subsequent ouster of Aristide prevented that renewal from taking effect, Fox says.

I asked Drake how the current devastation could be attributed to an expired pact:

“The pact may not be there, but the results of it may be,” he said.

In related new, Raw Story catches Dr. Wesley Stafford, president and CEO of Compassion International, telling Focus on the Family that "Satan has had absolutely free reign" over Haiti, so much so that "you can literally feel the evil in it"::

Dr. Wesley Stafford, president and CEO of Compassion International, told Focus on the Family that Haiti was a disaster before the earthquake ever struck.

Haiti ... has been a disaster in almost every way long before this ever struck. And it is a nation, between you and me, I guess, that Satan has had absolutely free reign in that nation. And while the missionary effort and the church effort has been enormous, this is a nation that you can literally feel the evil in it.

But then as the church lives out its faith, having come through this deep, deep valley, my great prayer is that there will be a great wave of healing and change in the nation of Haiti ... that could only come about through an interruption like this and only happen through the glory of God.

2009: The Year The Culture War Went Into Recession?

I have no idea what Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne has been doing for the last year, but whatever it was has apparently kept him in some sort of cave.  How else do you explain this column

It is 2009's quiet story -- quiet because it's about what didn't happen, which can be as important as what did.

In this highly partisan year, we did not see a sharpening of the battles over religion and culture.

Yes, we continued to fight over gay marriage, and arguments about abortion were a feature of the health-care debate. But what's more striking is that other issues -- notably economics and the role of government -- trumped culture and religion in the public square. The culture wars went into recession along with the economy.

The most important transformation occurred on the right end of politics. For now, the loudest and most activist sections of the conservative cause are not its religious voices but the mostly secular, anti-government tea party activists.

Among the "evidence" cited by Dionne is the fact that Dick Armey, who doesn't like James Dobson, has emerged as a leader thanks to the "tea party" movement, and the fact that the fight over abortion hasn't yet sunk healthcare reform:

Even the cultural and religious conflicts that have persisted were debated at a lower volume. Going into the health-care skirmishes, both supporters and opponents of abortion rights pledged that they would not try to upset current arrangements that bar federal funding of abortion. Although they feuded bitterly over what this meant in practice, their opening positions reflected a pulling back from the brink.

Dionne's column was written one week after Religious Right leaders and Republican members of Congress gathered for a "prayercast" seeking God's intervention to prevent the passage of healthcare reform.

Over the last year, we have written more than 1500 posts chronicling various aspects of the Religious Right's increasing stridency, including several posts about the Manhattan Declaration, which was itself a proclamation that they would never stop fighting the culture wars, and James Dobson threatening to leave the country if reproductive health needs are covered by healthcare reform legislation.

Does Dionne happen to remember that Dr. George Tiller was murdered this year?  And that Wiley Drake called it an answer to his prayers, just as he was praying for President Obama's death while Randall Terry said Tiller got what was coming to him and warning that abortion coverage in healthcare reform would lead to more violence.

Does that constitute "a pulling back from the brink"?

If 2009 was a year when "the culture wars went into recession," I can't begin to imagine what "a sharpening of the battles over religion and culture" would even look like.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead
