Dejected, downcast and angry, conservatives have begun attacking the media and other Christians for not signing on to the anti-Obama campaign, maintaining that Obama’s re-election proves that America is experiencing moral breakdown. Family Research Council head Tony Perkins told talk show host Janet Mefferd that the election results reveal “symptoms of a deeper moral and spiritual problem that we’re facing in our nation,” and beseeched Christians not to just “go on the mountaintop and just wait for the Rapture.”
We wrestle with these political issues but... MORE >

I just wanted to point it that it has now been one year since Lisa Miller kidnapped her daughter and disappeared. NOM seems quite pleased that most of the candidates for RNC chair oppose marriage equality. Orson Scott Card says Mormon's will never forgive Mike Huckabee's "viciously anti-Mormon mockery of Mitt Romney during the 2008 campaign." Gov. Mitch Daniels stands by his call for a "truce" in the culture wars. Apparently, the fact that a Florida man was allegedly mocked for his faith is a sign of the End Times. The Christian Anti-... Georgetown University’s College Republicans and College Democrats hosted “A Catholic Family Conversation” on LGBT issues last night. The event at the Jesuit school was moderated by columnist E.J. Dionne and featured a debate between author/blogger Andrew Sullivan and Maggie Gallagher of the National Organization for Marriage.
At the outset, Gallagher asked for a show of hands on where members of the audience stood on gay marriage. There appeared to be more supporters than opponents (not surprising given the mostly young audience and data on widespread Catholic support for... MORE >

For all the flag-waving Tea Party placards accusing the Obama administration of unconstitutional acts and treason, it seems that threats of revolution against the constitutional republic of the United States are coming mostly from the right wing – and not just from fringe militia groups.
We recently noted that Religious Right activist Chuck Colson has launched an effort to bully the Supreme Court into opposing marriage equality by threatening that a pro-equality ruling would result in “cultural Armageddon.” And we have noted the American Family Association’s Bryan... MORE >

Yesterday, the Washington, DC City Council held another round of hearings on marriage equality in the District at which the National Organization for Marriage's Brian Brown testified.
During his testimony and subsequent questioning, Brown consistently played the victim, complaining that "those of us who believe that there is something special and unique about husbands and wives are equivalent of bigots or are animated by hatred or irrational animus."
Council Member David Catania questioned Brown about NOM's 990 tax forms and the group's failed effort to avoid Maine's... MORE >

EDGE has an interesting interview with Christopher Plante, Executive Director of the National Organization for Marriage's Rhode Island chapter, discussing his perspective on NOM’s mission in the state, as well nationwide.During the conversation, EDGE's Joe Siegel asked Plante what he thought about NOM board member Orson Scott Card, who has stated that "many homosexuals first entered into that world through a disturbing seduction or rape or molestation or abuse" and his vow last year that, should Proposition 8 fail in California, he would "act to destroy that government... Orson Scott Card, author of the popular sci-fi novel Ender’s Game, has joined the board of the National Organization for Marriage. You may have heard of NOM recently thanks to its misleading “Gathering Storm” TV ad campaign which attacked equal rights for gays and lesbians.
We think that Card, who turned into a reactionary crank somewhere along the way, will be a good fit for NOM. Both have ample experience with alternate realities, and that should prove useful in explaining why committed same-sex couples shouldn’t be allowed to marry.
But Card’s recent writings... MORE >
