Mike Huckabee

Right Wing Leftovers - 1/17/14

  • Tom DeLay says "it’s just unbelievable and scary who this president thinks he is and the tyranny that he is beginning to inflict on the American people."
  • FRC prays for the passage of the State Marriage Protection Act "and that lawlessness will be restrained."
  • Focus on the Family's Jim Daly predicts that votes in Colorado will eventually repeal the legalization of marijuana.
  • Scott Lively declares that Martha Coakley "is complicit in the murders of these helpless children and unfit for public office.  I pray for her to repent from the evil of abortion advocacy and to use the power of her office to oppose and not facilitate the continuing abortion holocaust in this state."
  • Ken Blackwell believes that the Obama administration will go down as "the most anti-Christian, anti-Israel administration in United States history" because Obama is "quenching America's sacred fire."
  • Finally, Glenn Beck and David Barton handicap the possible GOP presidential nominees, with Beck declaring that he'll give up on politics if Mike Huckabee wins because Huckabee "is a giant progressive."

Duck the Halls: The Religious Right's Own War on Christmas

If you’re already tired of the Duck Dynasty flap, I have some bad news for you: Religious Right leaders aren’t going to drop it. On Christmas Eve, while millions of Americans were finishing Christmas preparations and gathering with loved ones, Janet Porter and Rick Scarborough were holding an emergency conference call to launch Porter’s latest gimmicky scheme: sending rubber ducks to A&E executives to protest the suspension of Phil Robertson.

Porter has been warning about a war on American Christians for years – she even wrote a book called The Criminalization of Christianity.  So she clearly sees this as her (current) last chance to save America.  Faith2Action has launched a website MailTheDuck.com, at which you can hand over your contact information to Porter so that she can send a postcard on your behalf to Nancy Dubuq, CEO of A&E Networks, declaring “You Can’t Camouflage Anti-Christian Bigotry!” The postcard demands an apology and warns of a boycott until Robertson is reinstated.  You can also fork over some cash if you want to send a rubber duck or ten to A&E to be sure they get the message.

The opening image of the website is, unfortunately, a big lie. It’s a picture of Robertson with the word FIRED stamped across it. In fact, Robertson hasn’t been fired for making offensive comments in a magazine interview, just suspended. Americans who have wanted to get their Duck on this week have been able to watch a Duck Dynasty marathon. Even WND, in its story on the project, notes: “According to Entertainment Weekly, sources close to the show report nine of the 10 remaining episodes of season four have already been shot, and the network has no plans to cut out the footage featuring the senior Robertson.”

But on the conference call Porter and Scarborough had with activists, freedom was hanging by a thread. Robertson’s suspension is “an atrocity,” “an attack on religious liberty” and an effort to “shut down Christians.” Faith itself is at risk of “being declared unlawful.” Porter even compared Robertson to the famous Chinese activist who stood in front of a tank (yeah, that’s just the kind of risk Robertson took by spouting off to GQ magazine). Porter says Americans can courageously stand with Robertson by sending  millions of ducks (probably made in China, come to think of it) to A&E.

Porter mentioned that she is working on a documentary about anti-Christian persecution. A caller who described herself as a former lesbian urged Porter to include the story of Lisa Miller, the woman who became a far-right folk hero when she kidnapped her child and fled the country rather than obeying court ordered custody arrangements involving Miller’s former partner.  Porter said Miller’s story is part of her film project.

Back to the ducks.  In addition to Scarborough’s Vision America, Porter’s new project is being cosponsored by the dominionist Oak Initiative (Porter is a board member) and by Liberty Counsel, the Religious Right legal group that used to represent Lisa Miller. Of course, Porter and Scarborough aren’t the only ones trying to cash in on the Duck Dynasty controversy. Among those who have launched  petitions are the National Organization for Marriage and Mike Huckabee.  Huckabee and Porter are longtime allies; she declared his 2008 presidential candidacy anointed by God.

Right Wing Leftovers - 12/17/13

Mike Huckabee, fresh off of ending is radio program, will soon be launching a website called "Huckabee Post" early next year. Dennis Prager laughably claims that "no religion practiced in America – indeed, no world religion – has ever banned interracial marriage."

Right Wing Leftovers - 12/16/13

Mike Huckabee is reportedly going to let God decide if he should run for president. How much do you want to bet the God tells him to run? Obviously, the cause of all these school shootings is lack of proper faith in God:

Flashback: Mike Huckabee Woos The Religious Right, Assuring Them 'I Come From You'

Yesterday, Mike Huckabee ended his daily radio program, fueling speculation that he did so in order to prepare to make another run for the White House in 2016. And judging by the spate of "Huckabee open to making another run" articles published today, there really can't be much doubt that that it exactly what he is intending to do.

Right Wing Leftovers - 12/6/13

  • Rick Santorum is the gift that keeps on giving, as he's now comparing the fight against Obamacare to Nelson Mandela's fight against apartheid.
  • Is Sarah Palin really penning Christmas messages for the radicals over at The Oak Initiative?
  • Peter LaBarbera is upset "to see House Speaker Boehner and other prominent Republicans backing openly homosexual candidates because these candidates are not going to serve the interest of the Republican Party if the party still claims to be pro-family."
  • Robert Knight says Republicans have to learn to fight back in the "war on women": "They've got to learn how to talk about these issues – and also not to be defensive about them, but to put their questioners on the defensive."
  • Finally, groups of pastors organized by David Lane will be meeting with Mike Huckabee in an effort to convince him to run for president.

Right Wing Leftovers - 12/2/13

  • The Christian Post reports that "Family Research Council President Tony Perkins led seven members of Congress known for their strong ties to evangelical Christians on a nine-day swing through Israel's Holy Land earlier this month, touring the country's most important religious sites and meeting with top-level Israeli officials."
  • Larry Pratt says people are buying weapons this time of year because they’re scared of Obama.
  • Glenn Beck is "convinced that Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s are put together through divine providence, that when we are humble enough, we will see the meaning of Christmas and we’ll be able to change our life in the new year."
  • Mike Huckabee's audience is smaller than it appears.
  • Finally, Allen West claims that Obama administration has issued new air-quality restrictions in order to make in impossible to produce bullets as a form of "backdoor gun control." It's not true, of course.

Right Wing Leftovers - 11/27/13

  • Mike Huckabee will be ending his daily three hour radio program in early December.
  • The US is moving its Vatican embassy, so we can probably expect to hear lots of Religious Right leaders screaming about how this is more evidence of President Obama hates Christianity or something.
  • Peter LaBarbera says that no matter how widespread marriage equality becomes, "it has nothing to do with our Judeo-Christian tradition, so this is not marriage and we cannot pretend that this is marriage."
  • A conservative polling firm claims that "Christian conservative activist Bob Vander Plaats would become the Republican frontrunner were he to run for U.S. Senate."
  • Finally, FRC prays against the Nuclear Option: "Just as a wind from heaven prevailed against Cornwallis 232 years ago, may our God-fearing Senators be given winds of wisdom to navigate their way amid this new, even more hostile environment. May God protect us from judges who oppose what God calls right!"

Right Wing Leftovers - 10/17/13

  • Larry Klayman stands by the crazy remarks he made at a White House protest last weekend because "the truth needed to be said."
  • This feud between John McCain and Louie Gohmert is getting more entertaining by the day.
  • Mike Huckabee's PAC has endorsed anti-gay activist Gary Glenn in his run for Michigan State Representative.
  • Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute says that anti-bullying programs are "a strategic means to silence us."
  • Finally, can you imagine how Glenn Beck would react to news that MSNBC had opened an office and was renting space from Media Matters?

Religious Right Will Cheer Tea Party Extremism at Values Voter Summit

Boehner threatens the global economy w/ default, the Tea Party shutdown continues & a new Supreme Court term could do harm to campaign finance, reproductive choice & church-state separation...perfect week for the Values Voter Summit!

Rod Parsley's Religious Right Allies Hail New Book

Religious Right leaders are lining up to endorse Rod Parsley’s new book, The Cross, which is about how American culture and even Christian churches have “degraded the significance of the cross.” Parsley, who has also authored works such as Silent No More, Culturally Incorrect and Living On Our Heads, is best known for his Prosperity Gospel preaching, opulent living and right-wing politics.

The flamboyant Ohio-based televangelist was highly involved in organizing pastors and evangelical voters in 2004 to back George W. Bush’s re-election (an effort that drew IRS scrutiny). The anti-gay pastor also was a critical player in the campaign to pass Ohio’s constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions.

After he endorsed John McCain in the 2008 election, McCain ended up disavowing the endorsement due to Parsley’s extremist rhetoric.

But while McCain may have renounced Parsley, few others on the right have.

Mike Huckabee recorded a video promoting Parsley’s new book, and interviewed him on his radio show:

Harry Jackson said Parsley’s book is a rebuke to churches that approve of “loose lifestyles”:

Parsley also received an endorsement from Pat Robertson, who said Parsley speaks through the “post-modern clamor” to issue a “call for a return to the discarded values of the past”:

Right Wing Leftovers - 8/30/13

  • Liz Cheney wants Republican primary voters in Wyoming to know that she is “not pro-gay marriage,” which we guess means she is against the marriage between her sister and her wife.
  • Who could’ve guessed that Mike Huckabee and Rep. Robert Pittenger’s anti-Obamacare interview was replete with inaccuracies
  • Even though Sen. Tim Scott turned down an invitation to Wednesday’s March on Washington event, conservatives won’t stop falsely accusing march organizers of not inviting him.
  • Joseph Farah is sad that Americans no longer “burst out in laughter” over the “preposterous” idea of same-sex marriage.
  • Russell Moore wants Religious Right activists to “prepare” to live “in a post-Bible Belt America” as they can no longer “assume that we are a moral majority in this country.”

Right Wing Leftovers - 8/29/13

  • Mike Huckabee has endorsed Sen. Mitch McConnell and Steve Deace is not impressed, saying that Huck is "now working against us."
  • John Stemberger promises that his new scouting organization will be more than just an anti-gay version of the Boy Scouts.
  • If you are running for public office and say of President Obama that you hope somebody will "shoot the Ni**er," you are going to get a nice visit from the Secret Service.
  • Sandy Rios will be headlining Peter LaBarbera's AFTAH Dinner-Banquet on Nov. 16.
  • Finally, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is very appreciative of what "the American Family [Association] does for all of us."

Huckabee and Nugent Joke about Hunting Democrats

Mike Huckabee invited NRA board member Ted Nugent onto his radio show today where they kicked off the interview by discussing Nugent’s “mystical, wonderful hunting dog” Gonzo.

“Maybe we ought to turn him loose on some Democrats and see if he can hunt them too,” Huckabee joked, to which Nugent replied: “There’s a lot of varmints out there and I think he would do good pointing [out] varmints and then we can vote them out of office.”

  • Mike Huckabee continues his feud with the Club For Growth.
  • Last night, Glenn Beck donated $100,000 to John Hagee's Christians United for Israel.
  • You know, it would be interesting to see The Blaze write a story like this about the things that appear on Glenn Beck's own program.
  • Rick Joyner weighs in on the Trayvon Martin murder case verdict and the problems of racism, admitting that "with the recent controversy over the Martin/Zimmerman tragedy, I have had many racist thoughts surface in my own heart."
  • Finally, "Coach" Dave is out with a new video in which he speculates that every new member of Congress is, upon taking office, immediately greeted by a gang of thugs who threaten them and their families with blackmail or violence.

Earlier this week, Mike Huckabee ripped into the Republican Party for what he feels is its insufficient willingness to take a public stand against gay marriage, declaring that he is "utterly exasperated" with the GOP and its leadership on the issue. He threatened to leave the party and take a bunch of "God-fearing, Bible-believing people" with him unless the party speaks out more forcefully against gay rights. Predictably, the National Organization for Marriage hailed Huckabee as a hero today, praising him for "speaking for millions of Americans who are sick of... MORE >

Responding today to Mike Huckabee’s threat to leave the GOP over Republican leaders’ muted response to gay marriage victories, Rep. Rob DeSantis reassured the former governor that the Republican Party is not giving up on its fight against gay rights. The freshman Republican from Florida told Newsmax TV that Huckabee and other Religious Right leaders shouldn’t even think about leaving the GOP. “Being in Congress and seeing the left wing of the Democratic Party and the elite media in action, they are hostile to conservative cultural values across the board, they are... In an interview with Iowa-based conservative talk show host Steve Deace on Monday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee repeated his recommendation that governors simply ignore the Supreme Court’s decision to let stand lower court rulings legalizing marriage equality in several new states, adding that state governments should have also ignored Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court rulings banning school-sponsored prayer. When Deace pressed him on the “maelstrom” that would be set off if state governments simply ignored court rulings on marriage, Huckabee responded that it was in... MORE >

This morning's broadcast of the American Family Association's "Today's Issues" program was dedicated to promoting the AFA's "A Time to Speak" documentary, which is aimed at getting pastors to mobilize their congregations to vote in the upcoming elections. One guest on the program was Mike Huckabee, who began his interview by threatening to leave the Republican Party if the GOP does not take a stand against the Supreme Court's decision yesterday not to hear appeals of lower court rulings striking down gay marriage bans in several states. Incensed by the... MORE >

Mike Huckabee is still insisting that President Obama is an anti-American radical who was conditioned by his absent Kenyan father to dislike the U.S. Speaking with Pat Robertson on “The 700 Club" today, Huckabee made the not entirely believable claim that he actually was rooting for Obama when he first took office and expected him to be a “nonpartisan president” who would “bring people together.” “I have to believe that deep inside of him there is a sense in which he doesn’t want America to be the superpower, the exceptional nation that I believe... Mike Huckabee appeared on today’s edition of “The 700 Club,” where he spoke with host Pat Robertson about how the country is witnessing “the trampling of civil rights” because the Obama administration “destroyed the basic constitutional foundation” of America. Robertson, who endorsed Huckabee’s rival Rudy Giuliani in the 2008 Republican presidential primary, kicked off the interview by asking Huckabee how he will restore America once he takes the oath of office as president. “I think that if that were to happen it would be for some people... David Lane is an extremely influential but notoriously media-shy Religious Right activist who regularly organizes secretive events at which leading Republican politicians speak to pastors in key swing states in an effort to mobilize conservative Christian voters. He is also a full-blown Christian nationalist who believes that the Bible should serve as "the principal textbook" for public education and has warned that the United States would see car bombings all over the nation as a result of God's judgment because "homosexuals [were] praying at the inauguration" of... Mike Huckabee spoke at last night's session of the Values Voter Summit, where he made the case that President Obama was re-elected and America is now "on the precipice of disaster" because conservative Christians ignored God's call to vote in the last election. A good portion of Huckabee's speech was dedicated to rattling off statistics about how few Evangelical and like-minded Christians are registered to vote, which is made worse by the fact that only a small percentage of those who are registered even bother to actually vote. "When the call is coming to us from... MORE >
