Lou Engle

Right Wing Leftovers

It's a holiday weekend and I am pretty much at my wit's end dealing with right-wing nonsense, so I'm calling it a day a bit early:

  • No surprise here, Tony Perkins will be speaking at The Call.
  • Speaking of which, apparently Lou Engle emailed Sarah Palin before her debate with Joe Biden to tell her "this is an Esther moment in your life."
  • AZ Gov. Jan Brewer has decided she has had it with debates after her terrible performance in the first one.
  • Chuck Colson in not overly thrilled with the fact that Glenn Beck has become a religious leader.
  • Finally, I am getting really, really tired of Bryan Fischer.  The same can be said for Cliff Kincaid.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Sen. Lisa Murkowksi has finally conceded to Joe Miller in the Alaska GOP primary.
  • Vanity Fair has a long profile of Sarah Palin which I just don't think I can tolerate reading.
  • GODTV will be airing The Call.
  • Speaking of Lou Engle, he says Glenn Beck is a "moral voice" not a "spiritual voice."
  • Concerned Women for America finally addresses the important issues regarding Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, and "cougars."
  • Finally, the paraphrased quote of the day from Gary Bauer: "Bauer adds that the media unfortunately did a good job of destroying the political career of Dan Quayle, who he says was sort of the Sarah Palin of that era."

Engle: Using The Call To Break Satan's Control Over Our Government

Just yesterday I noted that Mike Huckabee had joined Tony Perkins, Mat Staver, Pat Roberston and others in recording a message urging activists to attend the upcoming "The Call" prayer rally with Lou Engle in Sacramento, CA.

And one of the points I have been trying to emphasize in my posts about the rise of these self-proclaimed "apostles" and "prophets" like Engle within the Religious Right movement is that when they claim to be battling Satanic and demonic forces, they mean that quite literally.

And, just to demonstrate that point, here is Engle explaining that events like The Call are so important because they unleash spiritual movements in America that can break Satan's control over our government, though which He is enacting His evil agenda:

Engle believes the anniversary meeting, which thousands are expected to attend, has the potential to turn the nation toward biblical values, as participants pray for "righteous" leaders to emerge from the midterm elections and for God to "shift the whole political system in America and the seven spheres of society."

"There is a hill above Capitol Hill," Engle said. "It's God's praying church who actually begins to influence the governments of the earth through their prayers."

Engle makes no apologies for his political advocacy. He believes if Christians don't influence politics, Satan will.

Prayer and preaching the gospel are the church's primary calling, he said. "But to say don't get involved in those high places [of government] is actually allowing our archenemy Satan to put his own people in those high places, where spiritual powers can actually control societies and release laws that actually legalize systemic evil," Engle added.

Huckabee Puts Out The Call for The Call

Last week we noted that the FRC's Tony Perkins has joined other Religious Right leaders ranging from Mat Staver and Tim Wildmon to Gordon and Pat Robertson who had recorded videos encouraging supporters to attend Lou Engle's 10th Anniversary The Call prayer rally in Sacramento over Labor Day weekend.

To that ever-growing list we can now add Mike Huckabee as well, who explains that "with Judge Walker reversing the votes of millions of people concerning traditional marriage, this is a perfect time to gather for a solemn assembly to fast and pray and stand for the most critical issues of our day."  Christians must gather, Huckabee says, to "cry out for mercy" and "turn this nation back to God as Jesus is our only hope":

Perkins Pitches The Call Because Only Christians Can Save America

Last month we noted that Lou Engle had gotten a bevy of Religious Right leaders ranging from Mat Staver and Tim Wildmon to Gordon and Pat Robertson to record videos encouraging people to attend Lou Engle's 10th Anniversary The Call prayer rally in Sacramento over Labor Day weekend.

We can now add FRC's Tony Perkins to that list, as he has recorded his own video warning that "the future of our nation literally hangs in the balance" and that only Christians can save it:

Colson: Republicans Who Won't Make Marriage An Election Issue Are "Full of Prunes"

For the last few weeks, we've been chronicling Chuck Colson's plan to raise up a nationwide opposition to gay marriage in an attempt to sway the Supreme Court by demonstrating that Americans will not tolerate any decision that recognizes marriage equality.

And he is still at it, again making it the focus of his newest "Two Minute Warning" video. In this one, Colson says that Republicans have taken social conservatives for granted for too long and this year are trying to downplay social issues in order to focus on economic issues as a winning election strategy.  That is obviously unacceptable, so it is up to Christians to tell them "they are full of prunes, our consciences cannot sit on the back burner" (skip ahead to the 2:40 mark):

Colson also apparently intends to use the Dominionist/7 Mountains-themed Pray and ACT organization founded by Jim Garlow and intimately tied to Lou Engle and The Call as a means of mobilizing activists for his crusade, as his likeness is now featured all over the Pray and ACT website and he's even recorded a video touting its importance:

Engle's Prayer Strike Force Targeting Hollywood and "Buddhist and Hindu Strongholds"

The other day I wrote a "Random Book Blogging" post based on Chuck Pierce's explanation that targeted spiritual warfare is needed to break Satan's strongholds on Earth and I linked that post to another recent post about Lou Engle's Prayer Strike Force, which is a mobile team of intercessors who will descend on those places being controlled by Satan ("places bound by injustice and gripped by evil") and free them from their bondage through targeted spiritual warfare.

So today I want to highlight this new video from Engle introducing this Prayer Strike Force - I especially want to call your attention to the part at the end where Sam Cerny of TheCall Institute explains that the Strike Force is going to swoop into "the darkest, hardest regions on the Earth" like the Air Force providing support to the ground troops.  And what are these regions?  Well, in addition to the US /Mexico border, they plan on targeting Hollywood "to confront the ideologies in the media" and Asia "where there's Buddhist and Hindu strongholds":

Random Book Blogging: Waging Spiritual Warfare, Literally

This piece from Rachel Tabachnick on strategic level spiritual warfare (SLSW), the ideology behind the growth of "prayer warrior" networks across the nation, reminded me of something I wanted to highlight from book I have been reading by Chuck Pierce called "The Future War of the Church: How We Can Defeat Lawlessness and Bring God's Order to the Earth."

Pierce has not been as openly political as have been the likes of Cindy Jacobs and Lou Engle, but he has been making inroads, having been involved in Janet Porter's May Day rally.  Pierce has deep ties to Jacobs and is actually next in line to take over C. Peter Wagner's New Apostolic Reformation dynasty, with Wagner recently explaining that his Global Harvest Ministries was merging with Pierce's Glory of Zion (GOZ) International into something called Global Spheres, Inc. (GSI).

Whenever I write about how this new brand of prophetic intercessors is working their way into the mainstream Religious Right movement, I tend to end up relying on the word "literally" a lot, as in: "when they call themselves prophets and apostles, they mean that 'literally.'"

I do that because I think that people tend to assume, when they hear these activists talk about things like waging spiritual warfare against demon strongholds, that they are speaking in some figurative or metaphorical sense.

They're not.

In his book, Pierce lays out the explanation of why they must engage in this type of spiritual warfare, explaining that sin allows Satan to gain strongholds in homes, families, communities, and cities that can only be broken by properly directed spiritual warfare ... and again, let me point out that he means this literally:

Satan gains access to an area in the same way he gains access to an individual's life or a family line: through sin. He does this by encouraging individual or family sin to escalate into corporate sin. When corporate sin enters into our assigned boundaries, we need to be aware of how that sin can build a throne of iniquity and how we, being positioned in God's army, have the authority to dismantle it.

Corporate sin - for example, idolatry, bloodshed, immorality and covenant breaking - creates a break in God's purpose, or order, for a region. Once this break begins to occur, Satan will take advantage to gain an upper hand and being to establish his influence in that area.

...

Satan uses ongoing problems within a community, such as murder, violence, pornography or gangs, to strengthen his throne of iniquity within the community. If your community is plagued by these and other corporate sins, you must realize that Satan has a throne of iniquity in place that is being maintained through these sins.

...

Satan's confederation, through which he maintains his system of worship, is not just limited to witchcraft or covens but can manifest itself through many forms of occultic practices, including satanism, psychic hotlines, spiritism, paganism, goddess worship, voodoo, fortune-telling, palmistry, demon worship, the use of spirit guides, and other New Age practices. The enemy's confederation also extends to those who practice any form of false religion - including Mormonism, Islam, Jehovah's Witnesses, Hinduism, Eastern religions, Native religions, Christian Science, and Bahai - and to those embroiled in secret societies such as Freemasonry, Shriners, Oddfellows and the Elks.

Even though many involved in these practices would deny that they are being driven by a satanic confederation, the fact is that through their practice of what the Bible clearly identifies as evil, these people are contributing to the throne of iniquity upon which Satan is seated in the area.

Earlier this week I noted that Lou Engle and TheCall were operating a mobile prayer strikeforce for exactly this purpose.  Called the Prayer Strike Program, these groups "will be developed and deployed to key regions in the earth where breakthrough is needed for the spreading of the Lord's justice and salvation. In those regions, the teams will engage in concentrated worship, prayer, and fasting."

So if you live in an area with a large population of Mormons or Elks clubs, don't be surprised when you see a battalion of spiritual warriors descend upon your town in order to break the chain of corporate sin and free the region from Satan's control ... literally.

Prop 8: Engle Calls It The End of Democracy While Garlow Warns Of Bestiality

Jim Garlow, pastor of Skyline Wesleyan Church, was a key leader in the effort to pass Proposition 8 and earlier this year explained how he brought Lou Engle in to lead their prayer and fasting effort; an effort which paid off where somewhere between 4:20-4:50 pm on November 1 during TheCall rally in San Diego they felt that "something had snapped in the Heavenlies" and "we knew God had moved":

Garlow's Prop 8 success led Newt Gingrich to tap to him to head his new Renewing American Leadership organization ... and so it is not particularly surprising to see Garlow (and Engle) reacting with alarm to the court decision striking down their handiwork:

"The next court case could conceivably say that if three people wanted to marry or four people or five people or if someone wanted to marry their dog or their horse, they have a right to that because no longer do we have a right to ‘discriminate' based on equal protection," Garlow said.

Proposition 8 advocates argue that same-sex marriage is not ideal for child rearing, but they say it also has serious implications on religious freedom.

"It's a chilling moment," said TheCall founder Lou Engle, who organized a prayer rally in support of Proposition 8 in September 2008. "Democracy is crumbling, and I believe, again, we're going to see the persecution of the church. ... Across the board, religious freedom now is being trumped by gender freedom."

Garlow said in several areas where gay marriage has been legalized, Christians have lost personal and religious liberties. He points to Swedish pastor Ake Green, who was jailed after preaching that homosexuality is a sin, and to a Christian camp in Ocean Grove, N.J., that lost a discrimination lawsuit filed after it refused to allow a lesbian couple to hold a commitment ceremony at its facility.

"If we lose on this one, we lose the capacity to be able to proclaim the gospel as we know it," Garlow said.

And, as we've noted before, Garlow and Engle are planning to dust off their Prop 8 playbook heading into the 2010 midterm elections:

The case could take years to reach the Supreme Court, but conservative observers believe Wednesday's ruling could impact the upcoming midterm election. Garlow said voters with conservative moral values "are going to rise up and say enough is enough."

He and Engle are encouraging that kind of activism through Pray & Act, an initiative calling for 40 days of prayer and fasting in the run up to Nov. 2. The effort begins Sept. 20 and ends with a webcast event at the Lincoln Memorial Oct. 30.

Garlow said he believes there is a 27-month window to "turn" the nation toward biblical values. "I'm not trying to deadline God, but my sensing is we have a short window left after which it will be too late to see America ever return to any sense of God-honoring truths," he said. "That being the case, prayer and fasting is critical."

Engle, too, is urging prayer and political activism. He believes the timing of TheCall Sacramento, being held Sept. 3-4, is strategic.

"God, in times of crisis, calls for solemn assemblies when there is no hope and there's no remedy," Engle said. "I think this is an incredible opportunity for people to gather from all over America to say: ‘God, we have no recourse ... We are coming to You for help in the time of trouble, to ask forgiveness for treating so lightly marriage in the church.'

"We [will] come together and ask God for some kind of sovereign intervention," he added. "We need to pray for a great awakening."

Oak Initiative Warns Democrats "We're Coming After YOU!"

A few weeks back, I wrote a post about Rick Joyner and The Oak Initiative, one of the "prophetic intercessor" groups that, like Lou Engle and The Call and Cindy Jacobs and General International, are becoming increasingly active within the more "mainstream" Religious Right.

Like The Call and Generals International, The Oak Initative is a member of the Religious Right "supergroup" known as The Freedom Federation and Joyner, along with Engle and Jacobs, participated in the group's "Awakening" conference earlier this year, sitting on a panel on "Pastors and Political Activity" with Rick Scarborough and Richard Land.

Later this month, The Oak Initiative will be hosting its first ever Oak Convention in South Carolina which is scheduled to include Joyner, Samuel Rodriguez, Lance Wallnau, Jerry Boykin, Cindy Jacob, and others where they will discuss methods for gaining influence over their version of the 7 Mountains:

At this time it is important to establish a leadership forum that focuses on the current major areas of dominant influence and crisis, including:

1. Spiritual and moral
2. Government and politics
3. Media
4. Economic
5. Social Issues
6. Environmental
7. Education

To do this we want to establish a leader and a council to address each of these spheres. Organizing this will be one of the major goals of the August Oak Convention. We will be establishing each of these with a Chairman, Asst. Chairman, and a staff devoted to both Research and Communications. The purpose of these councils will be to provide an accurate assessment of the great issues of the times, and to propose answers and solutions to them.

And among the ways they hope to do this is by creating their own "Christian Intelligence Service" and building their own media empires [PDF]:

The formation of a Christian Intelligence Service

This is for training an army of “watchmen” who are skilled in discerning important issues or events as they unfold, and can gather basic information about it that is accurate and trustworthy.

One of the number one issues that seems uniform across nations and cultures at this time is a deteriorating trust in the media for accurate reporting and information. Most of the people on earth have never had government information sources that they trusted to be accurate, but in recent times even the most trusted governments have had a significant collapse of integrity and trust. If this void is not filled with truth and accurate information, the level of deception of the people will continue to grow. We believe this is a basic call of Christians who are supposed to be a light in their times, which is more than just preaching the gospel, but it is also exposing what is hidden in darkness with the truth that will set people free. We believe fundamentally that all men were created to be free, and that the basis of all freedom is truth.

The formation of media outlets with the highest standards of integrity and accuracy

We intend to build a world-class media outlet that is built more on trust and integrity than just style and technology, though we intend to be good at these too. The body of Christ has the people resources to quickly become a great light that shines in this darkness with truth. We have the ability to almost immediately reach virtually every major nation, and most of the world’s population with news and information for less than the cost that is now paid to a single executive at present media outlets.

And of course the aim of all of this is decidely political, as demonstrated by this new ad The Oak Initiative has posted on its YouTube page which declares that America regrets electing President Obama and the Democrats because they are a threat to this nation and so "we're coming after you" and "now you will pay" in 2010:

Update: Apparently this video has been around for a while and is not an original Oak Initiative ad.

Schools and Signs: Lou Engle's Ever-Growing Army

It is important to remember that when he is not hosting massive prayer rallys for young people, Lou Engle focuses on turning those spiritual warriors into activists through things like TheCall School where students can spend a semester engaged in a "disciplined schedule of prayer sets, awakening services, classes and training sessions led by Lou Engle and the leadership team of TheCall School" in order to prepare themselves to become members of TheCall's mobile prayer force called the "Prayer Strike Team":

The Prayer Strike Program is a ministry of the International House of Prayer in conjunction with Lou Engle and TheCall. From its base in Kansas City, teams will be developed and deployed to key regions in the earth where breakthrough is needed for the spreading of the Lord's justice and salvation. In those regions, the teams will engage in concentrated worship, prayer, and fasting. Like a military's air force, these teams will provide the needed “air support” for the "ground troops" – the onsite ministries and churches – to advance in the Lord’s assignments. Such a role is described in Paul’s exhortation: “Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for Me.” (Rom. 15:30)

Years ago, Lou Engle had a dream in which he was playing soccer. He was the goalie, and in the midst of the game, he heard the Lord’s voice repeating, “You are a striker, not a goalie. You are striker, not a goalie…” From that dream, he knew that God wanted to raise up a people who would go on the offensive instead of the defensive. They would take their intercession right into those places bound by injustice and gripped by evil. We believe that these Prayer Strike Teams will play a key role in God’s strategy in this hour of history.

And later this month, Engle's acolytes are launching something called 8:18 The Sign which is an effort to bring more African Americans into the movement:

The black community is in an hour of crisis!

Our community is bending underneath the weight of the spiritual and moral bankruptcy that has manifested in the leadership of the church.

As a people, the physical chains around our necks and lashes on our backs have ceased. We are no longer fighting for the right to vote, or the opportunity to drink out of a water fountain. However, the number of fatherless kids and single-parent families in our communities is astounding. Our teens are being swept away by music and media that promotes death, while our young men without purpose or hope, are filling up prisons cells and graveyards. HIV/AIDS, violent crime, illiteracy and poor education plague us while the death decree of abortion is exterminating us as a race.

Through the seemingly inexhaustible list of issues that grip us, it is clear that the battle in this hour is for the lives of our sons and daughters.

Here is a new video from Engle and crew announcing the effort to "raise up an army of African American children from the prayer movement that will bring forth justice and revival to this nation":

ACLJ, Spiritual Warfare, and Zimbabwe's Constitution

For a while now, we've been covering the fact that Pat Robertson's American Center for Law and Justice has set up offices in Kenya and Zimbabwe for the purpose of shaping the draft constitutions that are being prepared in both nations.

Today, Sarah Posner of Religion Dispatches has an important new report on the intersection between the ACLJ, "Word of Faith" spiritual warfare, and the future of Zimbabwe's government as demonstrated by a recent "Women, Weapons of Warfare conference" that took place in Kentucky:

At the heart of this women’s conference is the concept of “spiritual warfare,” the idea that God has anointed his “generals” to defeat Satan and bring the world to Christ. During this pre-conference prayer session, the group prays for a “mega-breakthrough” and for God to “take down the enemy.” It’s not a war of flesh and blood, conference speakers are quick to point out, but against the evil evident everywhere around us: in the “total moral decay” of America; in the nearby “liberal” Indiana University; in the unexpected frog in the throat of a speaker from Georgia; in the angry outburst of a woman whose husband had left her; and in the fear of failure recounted by speaker after speaker—until they found Jesus, that is. It becomes evident, as the speakers give testimony about their relationship with Jesus, that for many he is not only their savior, but someone they converse with to obtain instructions for most details of their lives. Many call him “Daddy.”

Bourland introduces special guest from Zimbabwe, Pastor Vicky Mpofu, her “spiritual mother” whom she likens to Moses, a figure “God has anointed” to “deal with an affliction on her people.” Mpofu is, says Bourland, “an oracle of God to bring a warning to our country.” She predicts that people, “will wake up and listen”; then she prays for there to be “more than enough to take care of all the children of Zimbabwe.”

...

Mpofu, who co-founded the WWW conference with Bourland, is the executive director of the African Centre for Law and Justice, a branch of the American Center for Law and Justice, founded by Pat Robertson in 1990 as a “Christian” answer to the American Civil Liberties Union ... The African Centre for Law and Justice is injecting itself into the political process of drafting a new constitution that will supposedly pave the way for new elections. The African Centre for Law and Justice is aiming to do in Zimbabwe precisely what the religious right seeks to accomplish in the United States: declare the country a “Christian nation” guided by biblical principles, outlaw abortion, and ostracize and criminalize LGBT people ... Together with the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe, the African Centre for Law and Justice is working to garner the support of religious leaders and activists for constitutional provisions that would “affirm that Zimbabwe is a predominantly Christian nation founded on Biblical principles,” and require application of “the Laws of God in order to prosper and avoid chaos and destruction,” according to a pamphlet prepared by the EFZ and supported by the ALCJ.

Backed by the ACLJ, Mpofu has been traveling Zimbabwe to rally religious support for the EFZ’s constitutional proposals. “We’ve had a lot of support from ACLJ in America because for me to be able to go around the country to visit the ten provinces we’ve received some help financially and also we’ve received some help from the teams from America visiting and working with us,” Mpofu said. “The support has been tremendous.”

...

The EFZ/ACLJ pamphlet also calls for constitutional prohibitions on both abortion, by defining life as “beginning at conception,” and on attempts to reform the country’s laws criminalizing homosexuality. It calls for defining marriage “as being between a man and a woman” and for “any and all definitions of a family or marriages or relationships or legal unions that seek to include or permit same sex unions to be prohibited,” as well as for “sexual relations between partners of the same sex, bestiality, and other perversions to remain a criminal activity.”

Posner also posted video highlights of the conference, which has a Lou Engle/Cindy Jacobs sort of familiarity to it:

Be sure to read the whole thing.

Engle: Universities Are Teaching Students to Accept the Mark of the Beast

On Monday, a federal judge ruled in favor of Eastern Michigan University in a case brought by the Alliance Defense Fund of behalf of a former student in the university's counseling program who was dismissed from the program after she refused to counsel a gay client.

The student contended that her religious views prohibited her from counseling such a patient and sued the university for discrimination while the university contended that it adheres to the American Counseling Association's code of ethics which requires counselors to provide nonjudgmental assistance to patients.

The court ruled in the school's favor ... and Lou Engle see it as a dangerous precedent:

So says prayer leader Lou Engle, who worries the decision this week could set "the precedent for Christian students being expelled in universities across America who refuse to compromise biblical views on morality" ..."The federal judge is declaring that Christian kids do not have a voice to stand for a moral truth [and their] biblical convictions on the issue of homosexuality and immorality in the nation," said Engle, founder of TheCall, a prayer movement that has drawn thousands of college-age youth. "This is a profound moment."

But Engle also sees a bright side, in that this coming persecution will provide good practice for Christians in refusing to accept the Mark of the Beast:

Engle said Christian students will be forced to take a stand. "We're in the days of Daniel. ... You've got to trust that God will bring you divine promotion when you refuse to bow down to the image," he said. "To compromise for the sake of getting a grade, you're practicing to receive the mark of the beast."

"In other words, if you can't stand in this day, how are you going to stand when the real pressure heats up?" Engle continued. "We're going to find out who the real Christians are."

Lou Engle: "Political Correctness Is Killing Our Prophets"

Lou Engle recently spoke at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City about the importance of the upcoming 10th anniversary TheCall rally to be held in Sacramento, CA over Labor Day weekend to fight, in part, the "Antichrist ideologies [that are] pervading our universities and campuses":

Christians must stand on the truth of God's Word and not bow down to intimidating forces that would cause them to compromise for the sake of political and cultural expediency. We believe that this ruling is an invitation for true believers to stand for truth, pray like never before, and proclaim boldly the name of Jesus on their campuses. To simply wilt in the face of this ruling or to surrender when campuses try to misuse it to take away your rights is to give away more ground to the Antichrist ideologies pervading our universities and campuses.

When judicial and governmental rulings threaten to silence the voice of the Church, she only has one great recourse; united fasting and prayer as an appeal to heaven. ... The stakes are higher now than they were ten years ago. It is time for a spiritual revolution on the campuses of America.

But it not just about universities, it is about America ... and most importantly, political action:

I still believe in the greater revival for America. I still believe that abortion can end in America. I still believe that our education systems won't have to be taught homosexual ideologies and little Hispanic kids who can't afford to go to private education will not have to be taught the sexual immorality of the so-called false prophets of our education systems. I've got to believe that sex trafficking back be driven back and drug lords can be arrested because the praying church bound principalities and powers.

I still believe that righteous men and woman can arise in places like Hollywood and tell the stories of the fame of God. I still believe that men and women can arise into the high places of government in our nation, like Daniel.

I don't know what's going to happen, but I do know this: I've been called to stand in such a time as this. And if The Call was raised up with hundreds of thousands over the last ten years, I've still got to believe the promise He gave to me ten years ago when He spoke to me that what I am pouring out is stronger than the rebellion. This Sixties forty-year cycle is up and the Seventies forty-year cycle is ready to release another Jesus Movement. Can you believe with me for that.

Just begin to pray right now, pray for America. Pray. Just begin to pray for America. Pray God, in our darkest hour, when we don't even know right from wrong any more, nobody can even say a word publicly without being vilified, political correctness is killing our prophets, silencing the voice of truth. We have to have miracles again. Who will live for the miracle-working power of God to be displayed? I believe the days of solemn assembly are just ready to break out, that stadiums will be filled in the days of Obama.

Gingrich Warns of Sharia While Seeking Dominion

Last week, when Newt Gingrich came out in opposition to the "Ground Zero Mosque," I noted that his position seemed rather hypocritical considering that he had recently founded an organization called Renewing American Leadership that has, as its mission, the protection and encouragement of the free exercise of religion in America.

But the hypocrisy at the root of that piece pales in comparison to the hypocrisy at the root of his latest piece:

Radical Islamism is more than simply a religious belief. It is a comprehensive political, economic, and religious movement that seeks to impose sharia—Islamic law—upon all aspects of global society.

Many Muslims see sharia as simply a reference point for their personal code of conduct. They recognize the distinction between their personal beliefs and the laws that govern all people of all faiths.

For the radical Islamist, however, this distinction does not exist. Radical Islamists see politics and religion as inseparable in a way it is difficult for Americans to understand. Radical Islamists assert sharia’s supremacy over the freely legislated laws and values of the countries they live in and see it as their sacred duty to achieve this totalitarian supremacy in practice.

Some radical Islamists use terrorism as a tactic to impose sharia but others use non-violent methods—a cultural, political, and legal jihad that seeks the same totalitarian goal even while claiming to repudiate violence.

Does Gingrich not realize that the man he hired to run Renewing American Leadership, Jim Garlow, is a full-bore advocate of the 7 Mountains Mandate, which is a Dominionist theology that seeks get Christians in control of the levers of power and influence the world over so as to create God's kingdom on Earth and bring about the return of Jesus Christ?

Taking control of the 7 Mountians is the foundational principal of Garlow's new Pray and ACT political organization, which is being prominently featured by Gingrinch's own ReAL website and has the support of a who's who of Religious Right leaders:

Jim Garlow, Skyline Church & Renewing American Leadership
Chuck Colson, Founder Prison Fellowship & BreakPoint
Che Ahn, Harvest International Ministry
Vonette Bright, Co-Founder, Campus Crusade for Christ, International
Bishop Keith Butler, Founding Pastor, Word of Faith International Christian Center
Jim Daly, President & CEO, Focus on the Family
Lou Engle, TheCall to Conscience, TheCall
Father Joseph Fessio, Editor in Chief, Ignatius Press, San Francisco
Maggie Gallagher, National Organization for Marriage
Professor Robert George, Princeton University
Professor Timothy George, Dean, Beeson Divinity School
Jack Hayford, Founder and Chancellor, The King's College and Seminary
Mike Huckabee, Former Governor of Arkansas & Host, The Mike Huckabee Show
Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr., High Impact Church Coalition
Alveda King, Silent No More Awareness Campaign
Richard Land, The Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission
Ron Luce, Founder, Teen Mania & Battle Cry
Bishop Richard Malone, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland (Maine)
Eva Muntean & Dolores Meehan, Co-Founders, West Coast Walk for Life, San Francisco
Penny Nance, Concerned Women for America
Tony Perkins, Family Research Council
James Robison, Life Outreach, International
Samuel Rodriguez, National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference
Alan Sears, Alliance Defense Fund
Chuck Stetson, Let’s Strengthen Marriage Campaign

Obviously, these leaders and this Dominionist theology do not advocate the use of violence to achieve their goals, but you have to marvel at Gingrich's willingness to warn that "Islamists" are seeking to impose their religious views on all cultural, political, and legal matters while his very own organization is seeking to do the exact same thing.

Lou Engle on The 700 Club

A few weeks back, we noted that Pat and Gordon Robertson had recorded a video message urging people to attend The Call's 10th anniversary rally in Sacramento in September.

Today, Engle was on The 700 Club where he was explained that, despite the fact that the culture seems to be getting progressively worse, those young men and women who took up "the call" ten years ago have become leaders in their own rights who are now shifting the nation and working to bring about the next great awakening:

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Ken Hutcherson explains how the "Minority Thought Pattern" causes White people to be discriminated against and Black people to be duped by Democrats.
  • It is even possible for Alveda King not to turn everything into an attack on abortion?  I doubt it.
  • What could be more exciting than West Virginia's 8th annual Creation Conference?
  • Hooray, Rep. Michele Bachmann's "Tea Party Caucus" is now officially a thing.
  • Lou Engle will be on The 700 Club tomorrow, so we have that to look forward to.
  • Randall Terry's "Filibuster Elena Kagan" bus tour is off to a rough start.
  • Finally, the quote of the day from Rep. Randy Forbes: "[I]f we do not do anything else, we must make a commitment that we will never look the 56 Americans who signed the foundational document of freedom of the world in the eye and apologize for the greatness of America. America is a nation that was born to be special, and the moment we begin to apologize for America is the moment we begin to spread roots that choke out any seeds of success. America may not be perfect, but America is great."

AFA's Fischer Featured in NYT Article on Immigration Reform

I've returned for vacation and am slowly working my way through everything that happened while I was away and trying to catch up.  While going through my RSS reader, I saw a New York Times article entitled "Obama Gains Evangelical Allies on Immigration" and decided to take a look at it because this is an issue that we have been covering here for several months now.

As we've been noting, a handful of Religious Right leaders including Richard Land, Mat Staver, Lou Engle, Samuel Rodriguez, and Ken Blackwell, have come out in support of immigration reform, marking a distinct break from the rest of the conservative movement which has traditionally opposed any such reform and instead favored fences, round-ups and overall anti-immigration crackdowns.

So imagine my surprise when I took a look at the NYT article and saw this photo:

Bryan Fischer, in addition to being the one of the most viciously anti-gay activists operating today, has also been among the most vocal Religious Right activists opposing immigration reform, calling for the deportation of all Muslims and advocating for the deportation of entire families in the name of compassion and controlling "vigliante justice."

While the article focused mostly on activists like Staver and Land who are supporting President Obama's efforts to reform our immigration system, for some reason the NYT decided to feature of photo of a man who easily ranks among the Religious Right's most openly hostile anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant activists ... and, not surprisingly, he opposes those leaders who are supporting this effort:

Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis for the American Family Association, a national conservative Christian organization in Tupelo, Miss., said, “What my evangelical friends are arguing is that illegal aliens should essentially be rewarded for breaking the law.

“I think it’s extremely problematic from a Judeo-Christian standpoint to grant citizenship to people whose first act on American soil was to break an American law,” said Mr. Fischer, who hosts a daily radio show on which immigration is a frequent topic.

On a related note, Fischer and Staver debated this issue on Fischer's radio program last week.  You can read Fischer's take on it here.

When Engle Says "Act," He Means "Vote"

When I wrote the post the other day about Lou Engle's new political organization, Pray and A.C.T, I focused primarily on the Seven Mountains Dominion theology that serves as its foundation and the fact that leading Religious Right leaders were, for the first time, openly embracing an agenda that seeks to take over every aspect of our culture in order to bring about the return of Jesus Christ.

But what I failed to properly highlight was how Pray and A.C.T is explicitly seeking to implement this Dominionist agenda through the electoral system.

As Lance Wallnau, a leading proponent of Seven Mountains theology, explained nations are not taken through "evangelism harvests" but rather by having Christians "take over spheres and administer them for the glory of God." And one of the best ways to do that is to start by targeting the government, which is why Engle, Chuck Colson, Jim Garlow, Mike Huckabee, Samuel Rodriguez, Harry Jackson, Tony Perkins, James Dobson, and others are calling for 40-days of prayer and fasting ... but, more importantly, they seeking to mobilize voters who will pledge never to vote for any candidate who does not share their views on abortion, marriage, and religion:

But it is not enough to pray. We must vote and act according to God’s heart and mandates ... In the light of this we are declaring that we will not vote for any Republican or Democrat that in any way supports any measure that aides or sustains the killing of the unborn.

In similar fashion because of God’s foundational marriage blueprint from creation we declare that we can never vote for any candidate that does not stand for a federal amendment that holds that marriage is only between a man and a woman.

...

We refuse to align ourselves with governmental systems that legalize evil in order to be marked as those who have compassion for the poor and the needy. We can do it all without compromising biblical truth as our so-called “social justice brothers” would try to make us believe.

The parade of history has brought us into a profound generational landmark, and a great vacuum has opened again. If the church does not seize this moment Muslims will! Antichrist rage will! Sexual perversion will! Anarchy will! But now is the time for key men and women, even an entire generation to risk everything to become the hinge of history, the pivotal point which determines which way the door will swing in America and in the nations of the earth. Its 40 Days or 40 Years! Seize the Day!

For Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty.

So while one half of the Pray and A.C.T mission is prayer, the other is action ... and by action, they mean voting:

Being consistent by voting in all elections only for candidates who affirm the sanctity of life in all stages and conditions, the integrity of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and religious liberty and respect for conscience.

It seems that Liberty Counsel's Matt Barber is none-too-pleased with the coverage that dominionism and its influence and role within the Religious Right movement has been receiving in the media and on blogs like Right Wing Watch and so he has dedicated his more recent column to attacking and mocking those -including me, by name - who have been writing about it: There has been great gnashing of teeth in “progressive” circles of late over “Christian Dominionist Theology.” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has warned that much of the Republican presidential field embraces this... Lou Engle and Rick Joyner will be working together in September to promote The Call: Detroit, Engle’s prayer rally on November 11. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since both are closely involved in the New Apostolic Reformation, or the movement which believes that God is ordaining a new generation of prophets and apostles. Both have prophesied that America is turning into Nazi Germany and have claimed to know the reasons behind natural disasters, with Joyner calling Hurricane Katrina God’s judgment for homosexuality and Engle asserting that the Joplin, Missouri tornado... Lou Engle, who is set to lead The Call: Detroit on November 11 with plans to convert Muslims to Christianity and ‘free’ gays from homosexuality, now has a co-host for the rally: faith healer David E. Taylor. Like Engle, Taylor believes that God is directly communicating with newly appointed apostles (the central theme of the New Apostolic Reformation), including him. Taylor's official biography states: “Since 1989 from the time that he was 17 years old, he has been granted well over 1000 face-to-face visitation appearances from Jesus Christ personally.” In fact,... After many of the organizers for Lou Engle’s The Call put on Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s The Response prayer rally in Houston, Engle is gearing up for The Call: Detroit on November, 11th. The Call is a youth-focused prayer rally centered on militantly anti-choice and anti-gay messages and has received the endorsements of leading Republican and Religious Right figures like Mike Huckabee, Sam Brownback, James Dobson, Tony Perkins, Tim Wildmon, Mat Staver and Pat Robertson. Engle recently promoted The Call at Awakening: 2011 in Chicago, and echoed his earlier sentiment about The Call... MORE >

As we noted in our post-event write up of Rick Perry's "The Response" prayer rally, a large portion of the event was run by Mike Bickle of the International House of Prayer: A major chunk of the day was given over to Mike Bickle, who runs the International House of Prayer (IHOP) movement, which recruits young people into “radical” devotion to prayer and fasting. Yes, he’s the guy who said that Oprah is paving the way for the Antichrist. Bickle’s associate Lou Engle has organized a series of stadium events pushing prayer, fasting, and politics under the... Casual viewers of “The Response,” including some political reporters who don’t pay a lot of attention to the Religious Right, may have watched Texas Governor Rick Perry’s prayer rally on Saturday and wondered what all the fuss was about.  Most of the time was taken up with prayer and praise music.  Few of the speakers seemed overtly political.  Nobody used the occasion to endorse Perry’s pending presidential bid. But context is everything, and the context for this event was remarkable: a governor launching a presidential bid by teaming up with... MORE >

Updated 8/5/2011 On August 6, Texas Gov. Rick Perry will host The Response, a “prayer rally” in Houston, along with the extremist American Family Association and a cohort of Religious Right leaders with far-right political ties. While the rally’s leaders label it a "a non-denominational, apolitical Christian prayer meeting," the history of the groups behind it suggests otherwise. The Response is powered by politically active Religious Right individuals and groups who are dedicated to bringing far-right religious view, including degrading views of gays and lesbians... MORE >

Not too long ago, David Barton tweeted a link to this piece by Kelly Shackleford, suggesting that those who dare to criticize Gov. Rick Perry's "The Response" prayer rally need a "lesson in religious freedom": It seems that criticizing or opposing a public prayer rally is an attack on the religious freedom of those organizing such a rally.  Which is interesting considering that back in 2009 when a group of Muslims sought to organize a prayer rally on the National Mall, David Barton, Lou Engle, Tony Perkins, Shirley Dobson, Cindy Jacobs and others swung into action to...
