American History 101 With Professor Kirk Cameron

Yesterday WallBuilders' Rick Green, the poor man's David Barton, appeared as a guest on TBN's "Praise The Lord" program to promote and share the patented brand of Religious Right pseudo-history with which WallBuilders is synonymous.

And Green had some stiff competition in the regard as host Kirk Cameron - yes, that one - tried to stump the audience with a trick question by asking if they knew the difference between the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and which one contained the phrase "four score and seven years ago."

The answer, of course, is that neither document contains that phrase, which Cameron admitted ... before mistakenly claiming that it appeared in the Emancipation Proclamation when, in actuality, is was the opening line of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address:

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Herman Cain seems to believe that the number "45" holds specific significance for his life.
  •

  • The media finally notices that Michele Bachamnn has a tendency to just make things up.
  •

  • On a related note, Bachmann's campaign is so dysfunctional that staffers have to publicly release letters announcing that they have quit her campaign.
  •

  • Rick Joyner does not seem particularly enamored with any of the GOP candidates.
  •

  • The Florida Family Association is going after Target for advertising on a show on a channel that also airs ads for The Trevor Helpline, which seeks to prevent suicides among gay youth. Seriously.
  •

  • Finally, Bryan Fischer interviews Kirk Cameron.  You are welcome.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Bryan Fischer says the GOP's "Pledge to America" is "better than nothing" but slams them for promising to prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions, saying it "stands out like a pile of dog doo in an otherwise pleasant landscape."
  • Rep. Mike Pence will probably seek higher office.
  • This weekend is the annual "Pulpit Sunday" where conservative pastors endorse candidates in a direct challenge to the IRS, and Richard Land does not approve of it.
  • The National Tea Party Unity Convention that was being planned for next month in Las Vegas has been canceled.
  • Kirk Cameron is releasing a documentary about God's role in founding America, so that ought to be exciting.
  • Finally, Mike Huckabee will be campaigning with Rand Paul this weekend in Kentucky.

Kirk Cameron Debunks Evolution, This Time Without a Banana

Kirk Cameron has once again teamed up with Christian apologist Ray Comfort to announce the release of Comfort's own edition of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" which will once and for all prove the existence of God and ultimately reverse the spiritual decline of America:

Of course, the last time these two teamed up, they gave us this:

You can see Comfort's version of Darwin's book here [PDF].

Huckabee Hearts GodTube

GodTube, the religiously-based alternative to YouTube best known for bringing us such videos as "A Letter From Hell,"The Day They Kicked God Out of the Schools," and some excellent Kirk Cameron-approved advice on "How to Witness to Someone Who's Gay," is getting into politics:
GodTube.com, the website which set the record as the #1 fastest growing website in the U.S. according to ComScore during its first official launch month, announces it will conduct ongoing election polling for the 2008 presidential race. Religion has already taken center stage in this year's Presidential election, and GodTube.com allows concerned Christians to have a voice on important issues, such as the war in Iraq, abortion, and the economy. Currently there is no single source of nationwide Christian polling, and GodTube.com is uniquely positioned to reach the Christian community. With more than 2.5 million monthly visitors and over 250,000 registered Christian users, including 25,000 churches, GodTube.com connects with tens of thousands of Protestant and Catholic Americans each day seeking faith online. As Christians look to November 2008 and decide who will lead them for the next four years, GodTube.com gives users the opportunity to voice their opinions and discuss with other GodTube.com users how each candidate complements their own political and religious beliefs.
While most of the campaigns simply have candidate videos or speeches available, one candidate sat down with GodTube for an exclusive interview to praise "the importance of Godtube in the 2008 presidential election." Guess which one:

"Well, the reason GodTube is an important part of the election process is because this myth that Christians ought to sort of keep to themselves in the church and never get outside -- that's like saying "let's never let the salt get onto things that are spoiling, let's never let the light actually show up in a dark places to illuminate the path." That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. The whole point of being a Christian is to penetrate the darkness, is to preserve the things that are spoiling, and I don't know of anything more spoiled, more decadent, than politics. So if there's ever a place where there ought to be a concentration of Christian activity and involvement, I'd say it's in politics and government.

The outreach seems to be paying off, as Huckabee is now leading in the all-important GodTube polling.

Science in the Eyes of the Anti-Darwinists

Mark your calendars, because on May 5, former child star Kirk Cameron and “best-selling author Ray Comfort” are going to “prove God's existence, absolutely, scientifically, without mentioning the Bible or faith.” Cameron has, like others on the Right, blamed school shootings on the teaching of evolution:

ABC … will host a debate in New York City on May 5, 2007. Moderated by Martin Bashir, the debate will be streamed LIVE on their website and will also be filmed for "Nightline."

Cameron ("Growing Pains" sitcom and Left Behind movies) will speak on what he believes is a major catalyst for atheism: Darwinian evolution. The popular actor stated, "Evolution is unscientific. In reality, it is a blind faith that's preached with religious zeal as the gospel truth. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was once a naïve believer in the theory. The issue of intelligent design is extremely relevant at the moment. Atheism has become very popular in universities--where it's taught that we evolved from animals and that there are no moral absolutes. So we shouldn't be surprised when there are school shootings.”….

"Most people equate atheism with intellectualism," Comfort added, "but it's actually an intellectual embarrassment. I am amazed at how many people think that God's existence is a matter of faith. It's not, and I will prove it at the debate - once and for all. This is not a joke. I will present undeniable scientific proof that God exists.

If Cameron and Comfort think that evolution – the basis of much modern science – is unscientific, what kinds of “scientific” arguments are we likely to hear from them?  Maybe something like this, which just happens to be the second most viewed clip on GodTube:

Last year evangelical writer and WORLD Magazine associate publisher Warren Cole Smith created quite a stir with his column pledging not to vote for Mitt Romney if he wins the Republican nomination because of the boost his presidency would provide to Mormonism. “You can't say that his religious beliefs don't matter, but his ‘values’ do,” Smith explained, “If the beliefs are false, then the behavior will eventually—but inevitably—be warped.” He pointed to the Mormon doctrine of “continuing revelation” to explain Romney’s history... After a whirlwind media tour where he warned that his freedom of speech and religion are under attack and compared his experience to being publicly stoned, Kirk Cameron hosted Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Praise the Lord last week where he again promoted his new film, Monumental, and stoked fears of America’s coming demise. While interviewing evangelist Ray Comfort about his anti-abortion rights film, 180, which likens legal abortion to the Holocaust, Cameron found it “chilling” how “our country right now” has “sort of the conditions that could... Kirk Cameron’s new film Monumental used dubious history to plead with Americans to return to the era of the Pilgrims and therefore restore faith, liberty and freedom. Cameron didn’t approach the project with much critical thinking, which should surprise no one based on his last, failed attempt at American history, but history wasn’t the point of Monumental. The point of the film was to present a Religious Right view of history that will encourage current conservative activists and make converts of new ones. The overriding theme of Monumental is that America’s problems... MORE >

After a tour of both mainstream and right-wing media outlets that largely focused on Kirk Cameron’s denigration of gays and lesbians, last night his “documentary” Monumental premiered in select theatres with little public attention. The premiere included a live stream of Cameron in his living room right before and after the film, where he listened to praise music, gazed over food and mingled with family members and friends, while recounting how “truly sick” America has become. Cameron admitted that he is no history buff, telling his pastor, “I feel like a... MORE >

Kirk Cameron was a guest on the 700 Club today to promote his new Religious Right documentary Monumental. Referring to his interview with Piers Morgan where he called homosexuality “destructive,” Cameron told CBN News reporter Heather Sells that he was “stoned, so to speak” for not bending “to the moral standards of the politically correct, those in charge.” Following the interview, Pat Robertson, who yesterday said homosexuality is “related to demonic possession,” said homosexuality and abortion rights represent the “attack of Satan... Kirk Cameron appeared on Washington Watch Weekly with Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council today to promote “Monumental,” where he praised the conservative movement and warned that Americans are forgetting the ideas of their forefathers. Just as Cameron told David Barton and Rick Green on WallBuilders Live that people must either choose whether they believe in God or put their “faith in the idea that we all from evolved from slime,” Cameron warned that “the anti-Christian agenda” wants to trick people into thinking they are “evolved amoeba... Kirk Cameron was the guest on "WallBuilders Live" today in order to promote his new movie "Monumental" where he explained that the most important lesson he hopes that people take from the film is that faith is always involved in politics -  the question is simply whether we will be governed by the faith of atheists who believe we all evolved from slime or Christians under the revelation of the Bible: You know what's interesting is that faith is always involved in politics, it's just not always a Christian faith. If you think about it, even those who are secular... MORE >

According to Kirk Cameron, criticizing him is an attack on freedom itself, so it was no surprise to hear him tell Janet Mefferd on Friday that he made his new documentary, Monumental, on the history of the US because he fears that “our freedoms are being taken away.” Mefferd said that the opposition to Cameron’s assertion that homosexuality is “destructive” is representative of the “sinful condition of our country,” which “was what drove you really to make Monumental.” Cameron agreed and maintained that the moral and spiritual fruits of...
