In 2011, Texas Gov. Rick Perry partnered with pastor John Benefiel, a self-proclaimed Apostle who leads the Heartland Apostolic Reformation Network, for his The Response prayer rally. Like many of the other pastors promoting The Response, Benefiel has some rather curious views. For example, he claims the Statue of Liberty is a “demonic idol” and that the District of Columbia is under the control of demonic powers. While appearing on Sid Roth’s show It’s Supernatural!, Benefiel argued that the Statue of Freedom on top of the Capitol and the Washington Monument are... MORE >

Over the last year or so, we have been noting how the Family Research Council was slowly becoming more and more intertwined with various leaders within the New Apostolic Reformation movement, the collection of modern-day "prophets" and "apostles" who believe they posses the same miracle working abilities as Jesus.
NAR's public political activism has cooled since leaders had their coming-out at Rick Perry's massive prayer rally last summer, but obviously efforts to work its way into the larger Religious Right political movement continue.
Case in point, today we... MORE >

Earlier this month at A Gathering of Eagles, Cindy Jacobs, Harry Jackson, Dutch Sheets and Pierre Bynum of the Family Research Council led attendees in spiritual warfare against the purported demonic powers behind homosexuality and marriage equality, the media and secular government. Today, Jacobs’ organization Generals International told members about the event, including a meeting before the prayer rally at the Family Research Council including Jackson, Sheets and John Benefiel of the Heartland Apostolic Prayer Network as part of Jacobs’ new election initiative to elect right-... In our reporting on Rick Perry’s The Response prayer rally, we highlighted the work of John Benefiel of the Heartland Apostolic Prayer Network, who gained notoriety for his claims that the Statue of Liberty is a “demonic idol” and that the District of Columbia is under a curse because of its name, which Benefiel says honors the goddess Columbia. He claimed that his group succeeded in divorcing the city from the control of the pagan god Baal and renamed it the District of Christ.
Benefiel uses what he calls the “Baal Decree of Divorce” [PDF] to cast out the... MORE >

Back in August, NPR's "Fresh Air" dedicated a program to discussing the rise of the New Apostolic Reformation that featured an informative interview with Talk To Action's Rachel Tabachnick.
Today, "Fresh Air" is following up that program with another episode dedicated to understanding NAR, but this time featuring none other than C. Peter Wagner himself.
The audio from the program has not been posted yet, but the website has posted transcript excerpts in which Wagner seeks to explain his "sex with demons" statement and to downplay his past talk of taking... MORE >

Back in July, Kyle found that Cindy Jacobs and John Benefiel were working on an effort to lead a spiritual “siege” of Washington D.C. for forty days and transform the District of Columbia into the District of Christ, something Benefiel already claims to have done. The group, DC 40: Forty Days of Light Over D.C has released their prayer guide, “Declaration of Dependence: How to Heal Our Nation Through Prayer” [pdf].
According to the prayer guide, activists are told to ask God to “declare a new understanding that every area of culture is spiritual and the Bible... MORE >

As we’ve been reporting, self-proclaimed prophet Cindy Jacobs has dedicated her show God Knows to discussing how lands are cursed by sins like abortion, adultery and homosexuality, calling on Christians to literally take control over the weather and reverse the curse. In the fourth part of the series, Jacobs claims that lands are cursed with violence because they were previously inhabited by Native Americans who “did blood sacrifice” and “were cannibals and they ate people.”
Fortunately, Jacobs maintains, Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s The Response prayer rally in... MORE >

Janet Mefferd, one of the leading Christian conservative radio talk show hosts in the country, dedicated part of her show yesterday to discussing the rise of dominionism in conservative politics. Along with her guest, “Christian apologist” Robert Bowman of the Institute for Religious Research, Mefferd expressed her grave concerns about the growing influence of dominionists and their participation in Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s The Response prayer rally. They defined dominionism as the belief that fundamentalist Christians should have control over positions of political power and... MORE >
