Gary Bauer

Right Wing Bonus Tracks - 7/1/14

  • Gary Bauer is turning against Rand Paul.
  • FRC responds to the Hobby Lobby decision exactly as one would expect: "President Obama's team insisted that the 'right' to sex-on-demand trumps Americans' First Freedom, a privilege millions of men and women have died to protect."
  • In arguing that Christians cannot be gay-affirming, Michael Brown explains that "God did intend to legislate slavery in ancient Israel, but in a humane way and as part of a larger economic system.
  • On a similar note, if you are a Christian who thinks that homosexuality is okay, you apparently also have to think that incest, adultery, child sacrifice, and bestiality are okay as well.
  • Ron Hart comes to Dinesh D'Souza's defense despite obviously having no understanding of what D'Souza actually did or the fact that he admitted his guilt.
  • Finally, Laurie Higgins declares that "no arm of the government has any right to promote non-facts about homosexual activity or gender confusion."

'Disgusted' And 'Demoralized' Gary Bauer Rebukes Republicans For Giving Up On Gay Marriage Fight

A dejected Gary Bauer appeared today on “The Steve Malzberg Show,” where he said he doesn’t know whether “the emotion I most feel is anger or disgust” over the two court rulings today on marriage equality.

“America is now a country where the opinion of the people means nothing,” Bauer said. “We’re in deep trouble indeed.”

Bauer also scolded his fellow Republicans for not doing enough to oppose gay rights: “It is demoralizing to see how few Republicans are willing to publically show their outrage about these kinds of decisions.”

Gary Bauer Warns Obama Is 'Obsessed' With Gay Issues, Will 'Destroy' The Republic

Gary Bauer told the audience at today’s Road to Majority summit that President Obama is “obsessed” with gay issues, an ironic statement for a conference full of activists who have dedicated their political careers to opposing gay rights.

Bauer later said that Obama “repealed Don’t Ask Don’t Tell for homosexuals and replaced it with Don’t Ask Don’t Tell for Christians.” He added that if the president’s “secular” agenda is successful, “the Republic will be destroyed.”

Right Wing Leftovers - 4/24/14

  • Cliven Bundy cannot be a racist because, his son says, "two vehicles full of black men" protected him during the Watts Riots in 1965 and "he felt that they were his guardian angels."
  • After having repeatedly declared that Bundy was a Godly man of prayer, Glenn Beck has now abandoned him completely.
  • Bryan Fischer, on the other hand, is predictably defending Bundy's racist remarks.
  • April 30 is the National Day of Repentance.
  • Gary Bauer says there is a "misinformation campaign waged by media elites" designed to isolate those who oppose marriage equality.
  • The Pacific Justice Institute is asking the Supreme Court to agree to hear its lawsuit against California's prohibition on using "ex-gay" therapy on minors.

Gary Bauer Badly Distorts Poll Of GOP Voters To Claim 'Most Americans' Oppose Marriage Equality

It didn’t take long for Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins to misrepresent a recent poll their groups commissioned which found that “82 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independents believe marriage ‘should be defined only as a union between one man and one woman.’”

Speaking with Perkins on Washington Watch yesterday, Bauer claimed that the poll actually proves that most Americans opposed legalizing same-sex marriage: “While certainly, particularly among young people, there is some shift on this issue, most Americans still understand that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Bauer said of the Family Research Council/American Values poll.

In fact, the poll explicitly states [PDF] that it only surveyed Republicans and independents who typically vote Republican.

While the poll used heavily slanted Religious Right language when asking GOP voters if they “agree or disagree that politicians should support the redefinition of marriage to include same-sex couples,” Perkins and Bauer accused nonpartisan polling firms — which have consistently found that a majority of voters support gay marriage — of using misleading questions to trick people into supporting marriage equality.

“I think, Tony, we both agree that there is an effort underway here to use polls not to measure public opinion but to form public opinion and move it in the direction of the demands of the gay rights movement,” Bauer said. Perkins agreed: “Absolutely, and a lot of that is done by the way the questions are worded.”

“If there had been really been a massive shift among the American people to the redefinition of marriage, I don’t think we would see all over the country the gay rights movement vehemently opposing every effort that happens in any state to actually vote on the issue,” Bauer added, ignoring the fact that gay rights supporters in 2012 successfully led a marriage referendum in Maine.

Bauer later said that the polls are “cooked” in favor of gay marriage and insisted that gay rights advocates are afraid of having a “national referendum” on marriage rights … even though there is no mechanism in election law or the US Constitution to trigger a national referendum on any issue.

“One would assume if there had been a big shift of opinion, the gay rights movement would say, ‘Let’s have a national referendum, we’ll prove it to you.’ But the fact that they will spend millions of dollars to keep off of the ballot in states a reaffirmation of the traditional meaning of marriage I think is further evidence that they know the polling data, which is often being touted in contrast to the poll we’ve got today, are really in many cases — the numbers have been cooked in order to advance a particular social agenda,” Bauer said.

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/21/14

  • When asked if he would have beaten President Obama had he been the GOP nominee in 2012, Rick Santorum declared "without a doubt!"
  • "Ex-gay" Greg Quinlan says that gay activists are all "about dominance [and] silencing anyone who has any other opinion than the homosexual opinion."
  • FRC prays against "Transgender Bathroom Bills & Military Policy": "Intervene, Lord, for your Law is being broken! We have defied your created order replacing your laws with confusion. Cause, we pray, legislators in Maryland and other states, and the Obama administration not to add confusion to confusion as they could do. Cause your people, led by their pastors, to say, "Enough is enough!" and to exercise their voices and authority as citizens and voters to stop these and similar lawless actions."
  • Gary Bauer says that Rand Paul's call for a truce on social issues "will hurt his or any other Republican presidential possibility, if they're telling millions of American voters that make up the core of the conservative coalition that he or anybody else does not intend to deal with those issues."
  • Finally, Scott Lively is "greatly concerned about the decline of personal integrity and civility as American cultural values, which I attribute to the rise of cultural Marxism, exemplified in part by the cult of 'gay' bullies who now dominate our public discourse in virtually every sphere of society, but also by the parallel cult of pro-LGBT 'advocacy journalists' who routinely bear false witness to the public in furtherance of their shared ideology."

Right Wing Leftovers - 3/18/14

  • The next release from EchoLight Studios under CEO Rick Santorum is a TV movie called "The Redemption of Henry Myers" that will air on the Hallmark Channel.
  • Frank Gaffney offers a hearty "thank you" to Jerry Boykin because he deserves gratitude, "not cheap shots from critics far more deserving of the public revulsion they’re trying to foment against him."
  • Gary Bauer is mad at Guinness, Heineken and Sam Adams: "Far too many corporations are becoming active combatants in the culture war, fighting against the Judeo- Christian values cherished by so many of their consumers."
  • Gary Cass says that "because he does not believe in God, [Bill] Maher has no basis for morality. Apparently Maher does not see the utter futility of his feigned moral outrage."
  • Finally, while speaking of Maher, MRC's Dan Gainor says those on Left hate Christianity so much they would "kick us out of the country, lock us up, or shoot us," if they could.

Right Wing Leftovers - 2/20/14

  • Scott Lively and Peter LaBarbera are forming a new anti-gay group that will work to "more effectively oppose the now-global LGBT agenda" and "urge other nations of the world to follow the Russian example."
  • On a related note, Gary Bauer is not happy about all the attention Russia's anti-gay crackdown is receiving.
  • Also related, the "ex-gays" over at Voice of the Voiceless are not happy with Glenn Beck denunciation of people who hate gays.
  • Yay, Rick Santorum is plotting another run for president.
  • FRC's weekly prayer targets.
  • Finally, Glenn Beck does not know what to do about North Korea, but he is positive that God "is going to right this":

Right Wing Leftovers - 2/12/14

  • Sarah Palin will speak at CPAC again this year and we assume it'll be just as enlightening as her speech was last year.
  • Citing Deuteronomy in arguing that transgender people do not deserve equal protection is always winning argument.
  • Bob Jones University does not seem to be very interested in addressing the issue of sexual assault on its campus.
  • Daniel Blomberg of the Becket Fund says the IRS is "trying to prevent pastors from preaching on moral issues and on specific religious issues to do with the qualifications of candidates for office." That's not true, of course.
  • Gary Bauer is mad, again: "So all a man has to do is tell the country that he is sexually attracted to other men and Michelle Obama is proud of that. What a country we are becoming!  Does anyone in the leadership of the Republican Party have enough courage to seize the moment? Obama and his cronies are obsessing over 3% of the population. He and Attorney General Holder are unilaterally giving them new rights and benefits. The GOP should ask Obama when he intends to pay some attention to the hard-working moms and dads who fear for their jobs and who are trying to shield their children from an increasingly debased, anything goes culture."

Right Wing Leftovers - 2/11/14

  • Liberty Counsel opposes gay marriage because "while same-sex couples can enter a union of the wills, it is not possible for them to join in body in the way true marriage has always required."
  • Michael Youssef warns that "the subtler persecution of Christians in America, which began mildly, with the media mocking Jimmy Carter’s 'born again' claim, has escalated rapidly in the last five years."
  • Glenn Beck appears not to know the difference between the smallpox virus and the smallpox vaccine.
  • Mychal Massie calls for conservatives to leave the GOP and form a third party.
  • Finally, Gary Bauer is mad: "The promotion of homosexuality has become the cause celebre during the Sochi winter Olympics. From an NBC commentator appearing on air in drag to the latest ad from General Motors entitled 'New Love,' (aired during the opening ceremonies featuring a same-sex marriage), the issue is impossible to avoid. Yet when churches are bombed and Christians have their throats slit while walking down the street, there is a collective yawn from most of the mainstream media, business and political elites."

Right Wing Leftovers - 2/6/14

  • Gary Bauer is not happy that AT&T had condemned Russia anti-gay crackdown: "[W]hen I worked in the Reagan White House, I don't recall AT&T or other major corporations condemning the Soviet Union while Jews and political dissenters rotted in Siberian gulags. Sadly, while Ronald Reagan worked to rebuild pride in America and America's standing in the world, many corporate elites were eager to trade and "coexist" with the Soviets. And today most big corporations don't feel a need to condemn Christian persecution and human rights violations. Why does concern for homosexual rights trump all other issues? I smell a double standard."
  • Michele Bachmann will speak at an Eagle Forum luncheon next month.
  • Beware! The Girl Scouts have been infiltrated by liberal groups “specifically so they can first corrupt them, and then coerce them to put their agenda forward on the unsuspecting people that they serve.”
  • FRC prays against the IRS: "May God intervene to awaken the people and end what must be seen as plans to empower the IRS to permanently tyrannize the American people!"
  • Liberty Counsel has taken its battle on behalf of "ex-gay" therapy to the Supreme Court.
  • Finally, some times you just have to shake your head at the things that David Barton says on his radio show, such as this: "This is one of the things that liberals have done to us in recent years is make us think that everybody is inherently good and therefore if an accident happens with guns, it can't be the individual's fault who walked into the theater and shot everybody, it's got to be the gun's fault because people are inherently good."

Right Wing Leftovers - 1/29/14

  • A new poll shows Mike Huckabee is currently leading among possible Republican presidential contenders.
  • Pat Robertson is launching a new, on-line education effort.
  • Michele Bachmann announces that Tea Party conservatives in the House are preparing to sue President Obama.
  • Gary Bauer was greatly displeased by the Grammys: "[W]hat took place at the Grammys was a perfect example of the culture war that is tearing our nation apart, as well as America's growing virtue deficit. If men and women of goodwill of all races don't step up soon, our budget deficit and growing military weakness won't matter. Our virtue deficit will destroy this great experiment in ordered liberty under God."
  • Stacy Swimp obviously does not understand the difference between the national debt and the deficit.
  • Finally, "Coach" Dave Daubenmire thinks that President Obama is constantly under oath from the minute he took office, so any lie he tells is an impeachable crime.

Right Wing Leftovers - 1/28/14

  • Robert Knight says the message of President Obama State of the Union Address tonight will be "I am now in charge of everything."
  • We haven't heard much about the "North American Union" in recent years, but rest assured that WND is still covering it.
  • We are not sure what this has to do with Dinesh D'Souza, but apparently Gary Bauer thinks they are related: "How is it that the Obama Administration did not act when Major Nidal Hasan was engaged in activities that should have set off alarm bells, but somehow it is routinely uncovering the officer who drank too much in Moscow, who used fake poker chips in Iowa or the top general who had an affair?"
  • Gary Cass attacks Greg Abbot for failing to prevent Marlise Munoz from being taken off of life support: "Contact Attorney General Abbot, who is both pro-life and disabled, and running for governor. Demand to know why did he not defend Texas law and the life of another Texan who was potentially disabled?"
  • The Pacific Justice Institute really hates gender neutral bathrooms.
  • Finally, Bryan Fischer scientifically proves that the earth is less than ten thousand years old.

Right Wing Leftovers - 1/10/14

  • Good point, Gary Bauer: "Ted Kennedy can drive a woman off a bridge and go on to serve decades in the Senate and be hailed as a courageous leader. But if a Republican shuts down a bridge, the left is ready to breakout the pitchforks."
  • It is time for the church to start preparing for the fall of America.
  • Eugene Delgaudio's Public Advocate will be protesting Terry McAuliffe's inauguration.
  • Speaking of Delgaudio, you would think that, at some point, the voters in Loudoun County would grow tired of being embarrassed by him and vote him out of office.
  • Glenn Beck's public opposition to throwing gays into the ovens causing him to lose supporters.
  • Finally, speaking of Beck, we genuinely have no idea what this latest conspiracy theory is that he promotes at the beginning of this clip.

Bauer: Progressives Waging An Anti-American 'Jihad'

Joining other Religious Right leaders, Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families is jumping to the defense of Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson, who was suspended by A&E after making homophobic and racist remarks. Bauer seems to think that Robertson was simply expressing Christian values in his interview where he attacked gay people and waxed nostalgia for Jim Crow. According to Bauer, Robertson is a victim of “the radical left's jihad against America's cultural norms and our Judeo-Christian values.”

Naturally, it is all President Obama’s fault: “The culture war has been going on for decades. But the election of Barack Obama has unleashed the left, making it more aggressive than ever,” said Bauer.

While Phil Robertson has been the focus of this furor, the real attention should be directed to the intolerant homosexual rights movement and its totalitarian left-wing allies in Big Media.

The same cultural forces trying to make sure that no nativity scene is displayed in a public square;

The people who tried to destroy the president of Chick-fil-A for the "crime" of supporting traditional marriage;

The bureaucrats in the Obama Administration who are trying to force Catholic and evangelical business owners to subsidize abortion and pay for other medical services and products that violate their religious values;

The radicals who demand that a small, Christian-owned bakery be forced to cater a same-sex "wedding;"

The same people who are purging our history books and replacing the text with anti-American history -- it is all part of the radical left's jihad against America's cultural norms and our Judeo-Christian values.

The culture war has been going on for decades. But the election of Barack Obama has unleashed the left, making it more aggressive than ever.

Sadly, on our side, the resistance is often too weak. Too many churches are AWOL, too many politicians are cowering in fear, too many people are afraid to speak up.

I believe America, this great experiment in ordered liberty under God, will survive or fall based on how we handle these issues, not whether billionaires pay higher taxes or if the chained consumer price index is adjusted.

Right Wing Leftovers - 12/18/13

Gee, how could anybody have ever guessed that one of the stars of "Duck Dynasty" was an anti-gay bigot? Could the fact that they show up on AFA and at Liberty U might have been a hint? Napp Nazworth says "this polygamy case is being viewed through the marriage lens, but it should be viewed through the religious freedom lens.

Religious Right Activists Suddenly Against Biblical Definition of Marriage

The same activists who support a wide definition of religious liberty that entails sweeping legal exemptions for Christians and who believe that US laws must closely follow biblical dictates, are now upset that a religious family has successfully challenged Utah’s anti-polygamy statute.

Right Wing Leftovers - 11/8/13

  • Congratulations to Pat Robertson on being named "Bigot Of The Year."
  • Gary Bauer is mad that the GOP keeps losing elections: "The Obama Democrats are socialist to the core. They are expanding dependency on government rather than bringing people into the economic mainstream. They are cultural radicals declaring war on the family and unborn children. They have a foreign policy that reaches out to our enemies and alienates our allies. Yet GOP elites, the professional consultants and the ad men can't seem to figure out that this is a huge opportunity to define them as such and call them out for their extremism."
  • Gary Cass is mad about ENDA: "ENDA opens the door to bizarre behavior. Will you send your elementary age kids to a class with a cross-dressing teacher? This bill would stop schools from barring this behavior. Why are political leaders giving in to selfish adults with emotional issues, and not thinking about the innocent children? Children shouldn’t be the victims of these misguided adults’ desire to live publicly a queer lifestyle?"
  • Speaking of ENDA, it is nice to see that NOM's facade of just trying to protect "traditional marriage" has all but disappeared.
  • "Coach" Dave Daubenmire says young adults shouldn't be shackled with college loan debt so that they can afford to have babies.
  • Finally, the AFA may be losing the war against marriage equality, but the organization can take solace that they are winning isolated victories in the War on Christmas.

Carol Bauer: Spend The Holidays Telling Young People How Obama Is Terrible

Gary Bauer leads a wide number of organizations — American Values, Campaign for American Values, Campaign for Working Families, Americans United to Preserve Marriage — and it has been a very lucrative set-up for him and his wife, Carol.

Today, Carol Bauer emailed Campaign for Working Families members a “prayer alert” asking them to use the holiday season as an opportunity to tell young people why Barack Obama is such a terrible president, as “today’s twenty-somethings may now be awakening to political realities.”

“The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will be an opportunity to give those young adults in our lives a listening ear, empathy, the chance to vent about what they thought would come of the broad brush promises of a president who is forever in campaign mode and perhaps some advice and encouragement in just the right tone,” she writes. “It is my prayer that these days will be a wake-up call to the next generation about what is and is not possible in the real world of governing.”

She concluded the email by asking people to pray for God to “end the poisonous rhetoric in our political discourse,”eventhoughpoisonous rhetoric is what Bauer’s all about.

Winston Churchill described their struggle in epic terms and brought out the best in the Brits. We knew the history, but only as we stood in the cramped War Rooms and viewed the huge maps on the wall, which were marked with pins indicating the presence of German subs many just miles off our East Coast, did the enormity of what they faced become tangible. It was a teachable moment about what a free people are capable of doing during a time of crisis.

It strikes me that the United States faces a teachable moment right now, only ours is on the home front. The past weeks have been marked by breathtaking headlines about the government shutdown and the possibility of an economic apocalypse based on a debt ceiling crisis. In the midst of all that, the president's signature legislation, Obamacare, was formally launched.

Interestingly, today's twenty-somethings may now be awakening to political realities. They heard the warnings but cast them aside. Now they are coming into adulthood in a country where good paying jobs are scarce, health insurance costs are staggering, America's debt is soaring and the American Dream seems elusive. Three of every four Americans tell pollsters the country is moving in the wrong direction.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays will be an opportunity to give those young adults in our lives a listening ear, empathy, the chance to vent about what they thought would come of the broad brush promises of a president who is forever in campaign mode and perhaps some advice and encouragement in just the right tone.

Sometimes the most enduring lessons are not learned in the classroom. It is my prayer that these days will be a wake-up call to the next generation about what is and is not possible in the real world of governing.

I pray that everyone who reads this Prayer Alert will have an opportunity to touch the life of a young adult in the next two months as extended families gather to spend holiday time together. May these conversations be heart-to-heart words of understanding, encouragement, and guidance to the nation's young adults -- our future leaders -- who may feel frustrated, angry and disillusioned.

Ask God for the opportunity to mentor or guide a young person who feels the country's best days are behind us. Pray that we as a country, together, would have a common desire to face facts, acknowledge what is not working, be open to change that rewards individual effort and responsibility and move in that direction in our individual choices, lifestyle and political involvement.

In addition, pray that God would heal the divisions in our country and end the poisonous rhetoric in our political discourse.

Right Wing Leftovers - 10/24/13

  • Gary Bauer says that "if Barack Obama were serious about bi-partisan cooperation, which he isn't, he would start by publicly condemning Alan Grayson."
  • Mike Huckabee has endorsed Senator Mike Enzi for reelection over challenger Liz Cheney because Cheney is not anti-gay enough.
  • Mark Krikorian warns that if immigration reform succeeds, "there will be no public space, no opportunity as a national movement for traditionalist small-government conservatism. It's simply finished."
  • It looks like the Tea Party is giving up on repealing Obamacare.
  • Finally, FRC continues to pray against marriage equality: "May God help the pastors and churches in New Jersey, Hawaii, Illinois and New Mexico, to stand and do what only they can to withstand and stop the evil of 'legalized' same-sex marriage. May God give them eyes to see that there can be no religious freedom in a society where homosexual license is honored above God and religious liberty. May they be given wisdom and strength to prevail over everything that God calls abomination, promising to destroy those who embrace it (Lev 18:22; 20:13; Eze 3:17-21; Mt 19:4-6; Gal 5:1; Eph 5:31-31)."

To say that the Republican Party is having a bit of trouble at the moment figuring out just what it stands for and what sort of message it needs to help it start winning elections would be a bit of an understatement.
