American Family Association Goes To War With Glee

In April, Right Wing Watch first reported on Bryan Fischer’s interview with Houston’s Fox affiliate, where he sharply criticized the television show Glee for “glamorizing homosexual behavior,” comparing it to promoting drug abuse. Fischer, who is the Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association, is escalating his attacks on Glee and the AFA recently launched a boycott campaign.

One Million Moms, a “project of American Family Association,” called on activists to urge advertisers to drop Glee. “Ryan Murphy, an open homosexual and the producer of GLEE, is pushing political correctness and his lifestyle choice on teens. Teenagers are being desensitized, but parents can do something about this hidden agenda,” the group says, “Please send Burger King, Boost Mobile, Subway and Taco Bell an email letter asking them to pull their support from GLEE and no longer sponsor this program through advertising.”

On Friday, Monica Cole of One Million Moms joined Fischer on his radio show Focal Point to criticize Glee for featuring music from Lady Gaga and Madonna, having “vulgar” choreography, and including a gay couple:

Fischer and Cole also agreed that Glee promotes “deviant sexuality,” “normalizing homosexual behavior,” idolatry, and anti-Christian views, with particular animosity towards the openly gay, atheist character Kurt:

Cole: We were really offended by the choreography, it’s very vulgar, it looks like its pretty much imitating strippers, and they have music by Lady Gaga and Madonna, which if you’re familiar with any of their, let’s just say their role-playing or their lyrics, it’s not wholesome entertainment, it’s a far-stretch from anything that you would want you child singing in a school musical or a school class.

Fischer: So you’ve got choreography as well as lyrics in the songs that are sexually provocative, sexually explicit, and yet the idea here is this is supposed to be some kind of high school music club getting ready to put on theatrical productions. And, this came up when I had the debate at the Fox Houston affiliate that it aired at 7:00; I mean that’s right in the heart of what’s supposed to be family-friendly viewing time.

Cole: That’s what you would think, and that’s right. And there’s a lot of other content though, Bryan, that is just really offensive and inappropriate, when you have mockery of Christianity, there’s mockery of the Katrina victims, and the we also had three individuals going on dates, insinuating a three-some, and then you have the homosexual couples on the show, I mean there’s kissing on the show with same-sex couples. And they also have made several homosexual references in the show that we feel like that even though kids may not be seeing this, parents are not oblivious to what is going on, there is not a hidden agenda, it’s to me it’s very blatantly obvious what they are portraying as a normal lifestyle for a teenager.

Fischer: This program Glee is not only mocking Christianity but is promoting deviant sexuality, and Monica I’m looking at the alert that you sent out, the head of the piece, I’d like you to grab it if you got a copy of it: Glee Mocks Christianity. It’s interesting to me, if you’ve got there, maybe rehearse for us some of the content, I’m looking just at the second and third paragraphs about some of the explicitly anti-Christian content that was in Glee that prompted you to way in on this, this was back in October.

Cole: On October 5th, the episode had different quotes and dialogue saying God is a Santa Claus for adults, and it’s wrong to tell people to believe in a fantasy, they also have an openly gay student that says that he is an atheist and he doesn’t believe in God more than one time. And they also talk about God as a jerk because He made me gay and then His followers told me I chose to be this way and then I’m mocked every day, so he called God a jerk.

Fischer: That’s interesting to me because his character is an atheist who claims he doesn’t believe in God but then he calls God a jerk for making him like this.

Cole: So there’s this name-calling and, you know teenagers are watching this show, and you have other teenagers on the show saying ‘I fall asleep when I pray’ and ‘I see God every time I make out with a new chick,’ and we had one scene in the show that had a student burn a grilled cheese and it was in the image of God, or it was in the image of Jesus actually, so he prays to this grilled cheese and calls it Grilled Cheesus, and he makes this twisted idea of a relationship with this grilled cheese because they win the football game so he keeps going back and back to this grilled cheese, saving it, being very protective of it. So he pretty much having this idol thinking this is why he’s winning his football games. But the end of the program does say that it doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you believe in something.

Fischer: Even a grilled cheese sandwich.

Cole: That’s right, and that was very disturbing as a parent.

Fischer: Let’s go back to the program last week because that’s why the Fox affiliate invited me on to debate this gay activist because that night there was particular focus, particularly focused emphasis on normalizing homosexual behavior. What was the content of the program that night?

Cole: Well the episode was named ‘Born This Way,’ and so we had many opportunities we were hoping there could be a lesson learned in this particular episode, saying you know how you’re physically born, how someone may look, and just being accepting and happy of the way you were born. That could’ve been a good lesson learned. But then they had the homosexual student saying how you’re born homosexual, you’re born gay, and there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s not a lifestyle choice. So instead of having tolerance there, they were actually wanting to bring the point of acceptance and affirmation of this lifestyle choice.

Will Money Help Gingrich Win Over The Religious Right?

The Wall Street Journal today features an extensive profile on Newt Gingrich’s vast network of political organizations, including American Solutions, Renewing American Leadership (ReAL), and Gingrich Productions. The paper reports that Gingrich’s “network has amassed more than 1.7 million voter and donor contacts and raised $32 million between 2009 and 2010—more than all his potential 2012 rivals combined.” Gingrich also helped steer $150,000 to American Family Association Action to help defeat three Iowa State Supreme Court justices that ruled in favor of marriage equality. Along with ReAL, which is led by anti-gay activist Jim Garlow, and his support for the AFA, Gingrich has made overtures to other Religious Right groups and leaders including John Hagee, Bryan Fischer, Janet Porter, Liberty University, Liberty Counsel, The Family Leader and the Minnesota Family Council.

But will Gingrich’s financial influence, religious documentaries and appeals to prominent Religious Right figures translate to real support from activists who might be wary of backing a thrice-married adulterer? Fischer remains a skeptic, but Iowa’s Bob Vander Plaats, who coordinated the anti-judge campaign, is still grateful for Gingrich’s significant monetary aid:

Mr. Gingrich hasn't run a truly competitive campaign in 21 years. He is given to public gaffes, most recently criticizing President Barack Obama for failing to back the rebels fighting Col. Moammar Gadhafi, only to reverse himself after Mr. Obama ordered U.S. planes into Libya. He resigned from Congress in 1998 under an ethics cloud, after his party suffered a historic midterm loss. It was later revealed that he was having an affair with a congressional aide.

Even groups that have allied with him, such as the conservative American Family Association, aren't poised to back him, citing his two messy divorces and three marriages. "He is brilliant, and has much to offer. But he isn't what we need in the Oval Office," said the AFA's director of issue analysis, Bryan Fischer.

Wearing an array of organizational hats, he has met repeatedly with pastors, trained local candidates, consulted with doctors on his proposed health-care innovations and met with local refiners to tout ethanol. After raising money through one of his groups, Mr. Gingrich funneled $150,000 in seed money to a successful campaign last fall to oust three Iowa Supreme Court judges who supported gay marriage.

"Newt's role was quiet and very low key, but it was pivotal," said Bob Vander Plaats, a well-known Iowa conservative who led the anti-judges campaign.

The heavy emphasis on religion is part of his long push to atone for his multiple divorces, according to people who know him. "He was very direct about this," said Rev. Brad Sherman, a prominent Iowa evangelical leader, recounting a session Mr. Gingrich had last year with a small group of Iowa religious leaders. "He said he had deep regrets, and asked our forgiveness."

The Religious Right's Fact-Free Climate Change Misinformation Campaign

Calvin Beisner of the Cornwall Alliance is at the center of the Religious Right’s growing push against “the Green Dragon,” otherwise known as the environmental movement. As noted in the latest Right Wing Watch In-Focus, Beisner has his PhD. in Scottish history and absolutely no scientific credentials, however, he does have close ties to corporate-financed, anti-environmental groups such as the Acton Institute and the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow. Now, right-wing activists like David Barton, Wendy Wright, and Bryan Fischer are heavily promoting Beisner’s film (which they are also featured in).

According to Beisner, environmental protection is “anti-biblical” while heightened carbon dioxide emissions are good for the earth. Even though actual scientists have concluded that the rapidly increasing human emissions of carbon dioxide cause warming temperatures, drought, and rising sea levels.

While climate change threatens to reduce precipitation and produce devastating food shortages, Beisner wrongly claims that climate change will increase the food supply and, in fact, goes so far as to accuse the EPA of intentionally seeking to "hurt the poor":

Beisner: A lot of agricultural economists think that the increased crop yields that we've seen over the last forty to fifty years, something in the neighborhood of twelve to fifteen percent of that is attributable directly to increased carbon dioxide, which means that food gets more plentiful and that helps the poor.

Well, the EPA wants to hurt the poor [in] two ways: one, by raising energy prices by forcing us to switch from carbon-based fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, to much more expensive and much less reliable fuels like wind, solar, and bio-fuels. And two, they want to hurt the poor by lowering the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which would reduce plant growth efficiency, reducing crop yields, reducing food availability, raising food prices. So it's a double whammy on the poor.

Then David Barton, of all people, accuses scientists of ignoring anything that does support their worldview and manipulating data to support it, while complaining that it is all plot to increase government control and play God:

Barton: This is not about science, this has nothing to do with science. Science is a vehicle to give them more control over the lives of individuals.

Green: So there's no intellectual honesty then there?

Barton: No. There's no intellectual honesty. You find something that lines up with your worldview and you say "here it is, this is what I've always believed, I knew it was out there." And you find a fake science like the IPCC at the UN which has its own agenda ...

Green: And they're willing to put out supposed data, that's false ...

Barton: And the great proof that it's a philosophical worldview is when you refuse to listen to opposing data. When you get all these scientists on the other side ... who roll out all these studies that say "no, no, no that's wrong." When you won't listen to opposing data, science has nothing to do with it. You're into a worldview conflict at that point and your saying that my worldview demands that I have more control over your life, over what you do, that's why government does exist, you're hear to serve government, not vice versa, and this is the vehicle to do it. This really has nothing to do with science.

But what happens is, not understanding that, a lot of Americans buy into that this is science.

Green: Oh, they've been indoctrinated with it in education for the last twenty years.

Barton: Are you kidding me, Earth Day in the schools? We've got to save the Earth? I mean, that's like a tick ... trying to save a whole heard of cattle. I mean, ticks go along for the ride, they don't manage the cattle, they don't tell them where to go. And that's our arrogance in thinking that we can do something to save the planet and control where the planet goes. You know, we're just along for the ride and we're insignificant peons on this thing

Green: Well, arrogance is the right word. I mean, it really does, we get to the point where we think - not that we shouldn't do the things we can do, of course you do the things that are responsible - but we think that we can control this whole thing. We think we're God.

Fischer: Beating of Transgender Woman "Proves That We Are Right"

Last week, a transgender woman was violently beaten at a McDonald's in Baltimore, MD.

Bryan Fischer talked about the assault on his radio program today and I am sure you will be shocked to learn that not once did he utter a single word of condemnation, but rather used it as justification for the AFA's opposition to "bathroom bills":

The victim appeared to be a woman. In the video, it looked like a woman [with] long hair. But at one point in the fracas, her wig is pulled off and you still think its a woman, looks like a woman, and she's beaten to within an inch of her life, she winds up in convulsions on the floor.

And then we discover now that it was a guy all the time, it's not a woman at all. It's a transgendered woman, which means he's a man, he's a male. He's a male in every single cell his DNA. Every single cell of his body, every strand of his DNA in his entire body is male. He's not a woman, he's not a transgendered woman, he's not a transgendered female, he is a man. And here's the deal: apparently he was getting ready to go into, or had been in, the ladies' restroom.

And remember, Maryland came within one vote - I don't know if you knew this - Maryland came within one vote of passing a law this last session that would have provided special protections for transgendered people, people who think they're in the wrong body.

So if that law had passed, then this man would have had every legal right to go into the ladies' restroom, even if there are young teenage girls present and nobody would have stopped him. In fact, if McDonald's had tried to keep him, as a man, from going into the ladies' restroom, if that law had passed McDonald's is the one who would have got in trouble. They would have gotten sued, a potential franchise ending lawsuit.

That's why we always call these things "bathroom bills" and this proves that we are right. This exactly shows you the hazard of these bathroom bills. You give special privileges to people based on deviant sexuality, you're going to get in all kinds of trouble and all traditional norms of respect, privacy, civility, those are going to be completely shredded.

Fischer: Only Difference Between Liberals and Terrorists Is That "So Far [Liberals] Haven't Taken to Killing People"

On his radio program yesterday, Bryan Fischer explained that the only real difference between liberals and Islamic radicals was that "so far [liberals] haven't taken to killing people."  But other than that, they are pretty much the same because both groups hate America, freedom, and God:

There's this odd collaboration between liberals in America and Muslims. Liberals reject the Judeo-Christian tradition just like Islam does and that's where, I think, the linkage is. I mean, you look at Islam, they're going to behead homosexuals; liberals want them coronated; we want them helped. So these are poles apart, so why is it that liberals in America are so fond of and go to bat for Muslims all the time? It makes no sense in any kind of rational world.

But there isn't any rationality in liberalism. It's not rational. It's not logical. It violates everything we know about history, everything we know about logic, everything we know about morality. All of those are violated by a liberal worldview. So what is that they share in common? Well, I think what they share in common, the reason that they bond together, you know the enemy of my enemy is my friend, they both have in common one enemy: the Judge-Christian system of values, the Judge-Christian system of truth claims and values. They both hate the Judge-Christian tradition with equal passion and so that's what bonds them together.

And they hate America with equal passion. And they hate democracy. They hate freedom of speech, they hate freedom of association. So what Muslims and liberals share together is this hatred of the United States, this hatred of classical American values, this hatred of the Judeo-Christian values system.

And the illustration of the way in which Muslims hate democracy just as much as "regressives" do ... I'm not saying "as much" because Muslims are willing to go much further in their opposition to democracy than Democrats are. They'll try to shut you down, they'll try to engage in electoral fraud, they will try to use intimidation, they will try to use the courts, they will try to shout you down, but so far they haven't taken to killing people.

Fischer: Muslims Don't Have To Convert, Just Renounce Islam

A few weeks ago, Bryan Fischer wrote a post declaring that any Muslim "who wants to become an American had best be prepared to drop his Islam and his Qur’an at Ellis Island" and convert to Christianity.

That was too much for the American Family Association, which pulled down Fischer's post and changed it to remove all of Fischer's demands for conversion.

But, as we pointed out, just because the AFA changed Fischer's post, that didn't mean that Fischer doesn't really believe that Muslims ought to be forced to convert to Christianity if they want to become Americans, because he absolutely does.

But he won't say that ... so instead he just says that they need to renouce Islam, as he explained on his radio program yesterday:

We need to insist that immigrants to the United States affirm and believe in the superiority of Western civilization in general and the Judeo-Christian system of values and truth claims in particular over alternative value systems such as Sharia law. So you want to come here, you have to renounce Shariah law if you're a Muslim. You got to renounce death for apostates. You got to renounce husbands beating their wives. You got to renounce calling Jews "apes and pigs." You got to renounce the bloodshed of infidels.

So I guess Fischer would also support making any Christians or Jews who want to immigrate to the US renounce the Bible's demands that infidels be stoned, children who curse their parents or rebel must be put to death, that daughters of priests who become prostitutes must be burned alive.  Right?

Fischer: "I Would Never Participate in Interfaith Dialogue With a Muslim"

Like Jerry Boykin before him, the AFA's Bryan Fischer wants it known that he will never engage in any sort of interfaith dialogue with a Muslim and vehemently opposes allowing Muslims to worship in Christian churches, because all it does is allow demon spirits to compromise the building:

I would never participate in interfaith dialogue with a Muslim. You have all these Christians out there, these pastors, wonderful interfaith dialogue. You have pastors allowing Muslims to come in and hold their worship services in their church buildings, which in my mind is just compromising those places spiritually. So there is no way that Christians ought to open their sanctuaries to those that are serving Allah. Allah is a demon God. He's not the true god. You're inviting all of the spirits that are associated with Islam, that further Islam, that promote Islam, you are inviting them into your building and compromising your building spiritually in doing that.

Of course, on the flip side, Fischer has no problem entering a mosque and praying that God will tear it down.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Speaker John Boehner announced that Paul Clement will defend DOMA and NOM is very happy.
  • It was reported that Donald Trump talked to Ralph Reed about running his campaign, but Reed says that is not so.
  • Right-wingers don't care when Glenn Beck spews crazy nonsense all day ... but they do care when he steals their crazy nonsense and doesn't give them credit.
  • Yet another member of Congress - Tim Huelskamp - has no qualms about joining Bryan Fischer on his radio program.
  • Mat Staver thinks it is perfectly okay for Nevada to ban those who do not "have a religious affiliation" from performing marriages.
  • Finally, is anyone surprised that The Oak Initiative eventually took a turn toward Birtherism?

Fischer and Cain Don't Care If You Think They Are Bigots

Herman Cain returned to Bryan Fischer's radio program last week where he reiterated his statement that, if elected president, he would not appoint any Muslims.  As he explained to Fischer, "the Constitution does not have room for Shariah law" and every Muslims believes in Shariah law, therefore they cannot work in his administration.

Fischer and Cain then bonded over the fact that every time they tell the truth, people accuse them of being bigots:

Right Wing Leftovers

Fischer: Boehner's Compromise On Planned Parenthood Was An Offense To God

Bryan Fischer is doubling-down on his previous comparison of House Speaker John Boehner to Pontius Pilate and Nazi apologists over the budget deal which includes funding for Planned Parenthood, and is now suggesting that the Republican leader was “was more of afraid of answering to the Washington Post than he was of answering to God.”

While Planned Parenthood by law is prohibited from receiving federal funding for abortion services, Republicans originally wanted to stop the organization from receiving support for its work in a wide variety of women’s healthcare. Under the compromise deal between Boehner and President Obama, Planned Parenthood’s funding was secured and a vote to defund the organization failed in the Senate. Fischer, the AFA’s Director of Issues Analysis, now claims that Boehner “sold out” the Tea Party to the “pro-death” Obama by having the government to “continue to pay Planned Parenthood to run their chambers of horror” and has allowed “the wicked to pollute the stream”:

The president was so committed to his pro-death platform that he was willing to see our soldiers go without pay. Think about that for a moment. It was more important to Mr. Obama to pay people to dismember babies in the womb than to pay the men in uniform who protect our liberties. Paying abortionists was more important to the president than paying soldiers.

Why did the speaker crumple while the president stood strong? The likeliest explanation is simple: the fear of man. The speaker has always seemed deathly afraid of a government shutdown, surrendering up his hole card before anyone had even anted up.

He seemed paralyzed at the thought that he would be blamed for a government slowdown, and everybody in the room knew it. He apparently was more of afraid of answering to the Washington Post than he was of answering to God. The Proverbs says, “The fear of man lays a snare” (Prov. 29:25),” and the speaker fell into a trap of his own making.

The speaker is afraid of the wrong people. Instead of fearing the New York Times, he should be living in mortal fear of the Tea Party. The Tea Party cannot help but feel they have been sold out, their pro-life convictions abandoned in exchange for a mess of pottage, a $352 million reduction in actual government outlays. That’s about what we will now continue to pay Planned Parenthood to run their chambers of horror.

I have no doubt that the speaker is a good man. He’s decent, upright and wanted to do the right thing. But the Scriptures also say, “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked” (Prv. 25:26). When a good and upright man surrenders his principles under pressure from the wicked, the stream is polluted just as much as if he gone to the water’s edge and dumped the toxins in himself. Weakness is as deadly as malice. Allowing the wicked to pollute the stream when it is in your power to stop it is little different than doing the deed yourself.

AFA: Obama Should "Repent Before God Almighty" For Supporting Planned Parenthood

Upon hearing the news that the budget compromise includes funding for Planned Parenthood, the reactions from anti-choice groups have ranged from resigned to resistant as there will only be a separate vote on defunding the women’s health group that is likely to fail in the Senate. The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer likened Speaker John Boehner to Pontius Pilate and Nazi apologists over the deal, and now the AFA’s President Tim Wildmon said Boehner “failed pro-life Americans.” In an email message to members, Wildmon urged activists to demand their representatives and senators vote to defund Planned Parenthood. But he also asked members join him “in praying for Barack Obama” because “this man should repent before God Almighty” for his pro-choice views. Wildmon writes:

With the budget compromise including funding for Planned Parenthood, There is still time to let your congressman know how you feel about the budget deal struck between President Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reid and Speaker of the House John Boehner which DID NOT exclude Planned Parenthood (PP) and National Public Radio (NPR) from receiving federal tax dollars. The AFA believes that it is long past time to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that receives $350 million in taxpayer funds while aborting 324,000 babies a year.

On behalf of AFA, I have expressed to Speaker Boehner's office how disappointed we are that he gave in to Obama on the matter of tax dollars going to Planned Parenthood. The decision was Boehner's to make and -- for whatever reason and for whatever good he may have accomplished in this deal otherwise -- on the insistence that Planned Parenthood be defunded, he failed pro-life Americans. There is no other way to put it.

P.S. For Barack Obama's part, this man should repent before God Almighty for defending and advancing the evil practice of killing unborn babies. He is by far the most pro-abortion president America has ever had. Will you join me in praying for Barack Obama today?

Fischer Likens Boehner To Pontius Pilate Over Planned Parenthood Compromise

Bryan Fischer’s recent attacks on African Americans, Native Americans, Muslim Americans, and the Constitution haven’t seemed to bother leading Republicans, who consistently appear on his show. But now, Fischer is going after the highest-ranking Republican official in the country: House Speaker John Boehner.

As part of the budget compromise to avert a government shutdown, Boehner withdrew the Republicans’ extreme and unpopular policy rider to defund Planned Parenthood. Defunding the women’s health organization was on the top of the agenda for Religious Right groups. Instead, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid guaranteed a vote on the defunding measure in the Senate separate from the budget deal.

Fischer, the Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association, likens Boehner’s compromise on Planned Parenthood’s funding to Pontius Pilate approving the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and to “protecting the Nazi regime” during the Holocaust:

Pilate folded under politically-correct pressure, caved-in, and handed Christ over to their will. So Pilate new exactly what he was doing, he was caving-in to political pressure from his political opponents. What I think, frankly, John Boehner did on Friday night…. John Boehner blinked, rather than standing to defund Planned Parenthood and defend unborn human life, he caved, he folded, he capitulated…. One million dollars a day going to Planned Parenthood while they are butchering a population the size of Cincinnati. This is like the gas chambers, this is like Auschwitz, this is like protecting the Nazi regime while they are gassing Jews. Ladies and gentlemen it is absolutely no different in terms of the moral implications and the moral issues that are involved.

It Is Time For the AFA To Take Responsibility For Fischer's Bigotry

As Brian noted earlier today, for the third time in the last two months, the American Family Association has been forced to remove another post written by Bryan Fischer in an effort to distance itself from his unmitigated bigotry.

Back in February, the AFA yanked Fischer's post claiming that Native Americans deserved to be wiped out by Christian settlers because they refused to accept Christianity and were therefore "morally disqualified from [holding] sovereign control of American soil."

Shortly thereafter, Fischer wrote a post claiming that welfare needed to be ended because all it did was give money to African Americans who "rut like rabbits" and that too was yanked down by the AFA and replaced with a new version that tried to erase that outrageous statement.

Now Fischer has demanded that every Muslim immigrant who seeks to come to the United States must "convert to Christianity" and once again the AFA has removed that post and replaced it with one that says exactly the opposite.

So let us ask a question we have posed before: just when does Bryan Fischer speak for the American Family Association?

Whenever Fischer's bigotry becomes impossible to ignore and people seek to call the AFA to account, Fischer's response is to claim that when he writes such things, he is "just speaking for myself."  Fischer insists that the things he writes on the blog should in no way be seen as a reflection upon the AFA and even places a disclaimer at the bottom stating as much:

Unless otherwise noted, the opinions expressed are the author’s and do not necessarily reflect the views of the American Family Association or American Family Radio.

Now Fischer has also made it abundantly clear that he absolutely, positively, one hundred percent believes every bigoted word he says and that he doesn't write anything that he doesn't believe to be true:

So we know that when Fischer says that Native Americans deserved to be wiped out, African Americans rut like rabbits, and Muslims need to convert to Christianity, he absolutely believes it, even if the AFA later changes it and tires to pretend otherwise.

Which brings us to the question of why Fischer's posts keep changing?

If, as the disclaimer he posts says, the views expressed are solely Fischer's and do not reflect the views of the AFA, then why do his AFA posts keep changing in ways that seek to erase his naked bigotry?

It's certainly not because Fischer doesn't believe what he originally wrote.  He absolutely does and he says so himself.

Obviously, the AFA realizes that Fischer's bigotry does reflect upon the organization and that is why they are continuously changing his posts to try to rein him in.

The AFA cannot place a disclaimer on Fischer's bigoted rantings claiming that his views do not reflect the views of the organization and, at the same time, keep editing his posts in an effort to distance the organization from his bigotry ... especially not when they are also giving him two hours a day to spout that same bigotry on their radio program.

The AFA either needs to own up and take responsibility for the relentless steam of bigotry that pours from the organization's Director of Issue Analysis and most prominent spokesperson or cut ties with him altogether ... because, frankly, the only way the AFA can legitimately claim that Fischer's bigotry does not reflect the views of the AFA is if the organization actually stops giving him the platforms from which to spew that bigotry.

Fischer Goes Too Far…Again: AFA Removes And Edits Post Demanding Immigrants "Convert To Christianity"

On Friday Right Wing Watch reported that Bryan Fischer, the Director of Issue Analysis for the American Family Association, urged the U.S. to require immigrants, Muslims in particular, to “convert to Christianity.” At some point after it was posted, the AFA removed Fischer’s article from their website and he then rewrote the three paragraphs RWW highlighted so that now the article argues the exact opposite of what he originally said:

In the original article, Fischer said:

Allowing Muslims to immigrate into the United States, a Christian nation by origin, history and tradition, without insisting that they drop their allegiance to Allah, Muhammad, the Qur’an, and sharia law, is to commit cultural suicide. We believe in freedom of religion for Muslims like we do for everybody else. But if they insist on clinging to their religion, they will need to exercise their freedom of religion in a Muslim country which shares their values: death for those who leave Islam, the beating of wives by their husbands, and the labeling of Jews as apes and pigs.

Immigration is a privilege, not a right, and our policy should be to admit to our shores only those with a commitment to a full assimilation to American culture, adopting our faith, our heroes, and our history. Someone with a Muslim background who wants to become an American had best be prepared to drop his Islam and his Qur’an at Ellis Island.

So ancient Israel offers a paradigm of what a sensible and sane immigration policy looks like. It’s simple: don’t break the law (that is, come in through the front door instead of breaking in through a window), convert to Christianity, fully assimilate (become an authentic American, not a hyphenated American), and support yourself. If you commit to those things, you are welcome here. If you don’t or won’t, perhaps it’s best for you to stay home.

Now, the three paragraphs read:

Does this mean that folks need to convert before they immigrate? No, but at a minimum, it would mean making sure that immigrants to the United States affirm and believe in the superiority of the Judeo-Christian system of values and truth claims over alternative value systems such as sharia law.

Immigration is a privilege, not a right, and our policy should be to admit to our shores only those with a commitment to a full assimilation to American culture, adopting our values, our heroes, and our history.

...

So ancient Israel offers a paradigm of what a sensible and sane immigration policy looks like. If you commit to those things, you are welcome here. If you don’t or won’t, perhaps it’s best for you to stay home.

This wouldn’t be the first time the AFA censored their chief spokesman, as the group in February scrubbed Fischer’s article where he said that Native Americans were rightfully expelled from their land and are punished with poverty and alcoholism for not converting to Christianity. Just last week, Fischer removed and altered his piece claiming that African Americans “rut like rabbits.”

Unfortunately for Fischer, we saved a version of his original post:

Fischer: All Immigrants Must "Convert To Christianity"

The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer is doubling-down on his view that the U.S. should ban Muslim immigration, and on Wednesday he called Muslim immigrants a “toxic cancer.” Fischer, who believes that the First Amendment doesn’t apply to Muslims, now claims that the U.S. should use the Book of Numbers when establishing its immigration policy and that Muslims should “be prepared to drop his Islam and his Qur’an at Ellis Island.” According to Fischer, all new immigrants must “convert to Christianity” or “stay home”:

  • Truth Wins Out: TWO Calls On The Republican Party to Denounce The American Family Association After Racist Rant By AFA Radio Host Bryan Fischer.
  • Towleroad: Judge Vaughn Walker Says He is Gay for First Time Publicly, Says Judges Should Never Recuse Themselves Over Sexuality.
  • Lee Fang @ Think Progress: Bristol Palin Responds: Legally Required Nonprofit Disclosure Part Of An Anti-Palin Conspiracy.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • I honestly cannot believe that NOM is actually quoting Virginia State Delegate Bob Marshall.
  • Speaker John Boehner and the GOP will probably cave on defunding Planned Parenthood ... but apparently he is still an anti-choice hero.
  • Newt Gingrich's Renewing American Leadership is starting its own prayer alert network.
  • FRC thinks its work was so vital to one anti-health care reform lawsuit that it is getting involved in another.
  • Finally, Bryan Fischer says there are too many questions about repealing DADT that are being left unanswered: "And what about families who rely on on DoD schools for their children’s education? If LGBT personnel teach and pro-gay indoctrination is allowed in military-run classrooms, does the DoD have any way of determining how many families will choose not to re-enlist because of this? If pro-marriage service-members want educational alternatives because of LGBT curricula in DoD classrooms, will alternatives be provided, or will they be forced to suffer the brainwashing of their children as long as they serve?"

As Brian noted in the last post, the Religious Right is hard at work trying to link the abuse scandal at Penn State to homosexuality and it is no surprise to see the AFA's Bryan Fischer making the connection as well, declaring that the lesson to be taken from the Freeh Report is that gays must be kept out of the Boy Scouts:  MORE >

On yesterday's radio program, Bryan Fischer was discussing the Right's latest conspiracy theory about how the United Nations is plotting to take away our guns and destroy our Second Amendment rights though the Arms Trade Treaty. During the discussion, Fischer ventured into David Barton territory when he claimed that Jesus preached the right to self-defense and therefore his teaching is "virtually the foundation of the Second Amendment": We not only care about the First Amendment on Focal Point, we also care about the Second Amendment. And remember, the Second Amendment, this is... MORE >

On yesterday's radio program, Bryan Fischer declared that there is "plenty of hatred in the debate over homosexuality," but it is all coming from gay activists and their supporters who are driven by a "heterophobic," "Christophobic," "dark, venomous, demonic hatred":  I am convinced that there is plenty of hatred in the debate over homosexuality, there's a lot of hatred, there's a lot of vitriol, there's a lot of venom - it is coming from homosexuals themselves. The real haters are homosexuals. The real venom is coming from those that support... MORE >

Inspired by a suggestion from a listener, Bryan Fischer hit upon a brilliant idea on yesterday's radio program: using health care reform to mandate that everyone attend church and assess a tax on all those who don't. As Fischer explained, "people who have an active, vibrant spiritual life are healthier" and since "Obamacare is all about improving the health of the American people," we ought to "mandate that you go to church for your own health and we are going to tax the atheists who don't go to church":  MORE >

Last year, the American Family Association's Bryan Fischer created a bit of controversy when he wrote a piece claiming that the Native Americans deserved to be wiped out by European Christian settlers because they were "steeped in the basest forms of superstition, had been guilty of savagery in warfare for hundreds of years, and practiced the most debased forms of sexuality." The AFA quickly removed Fischer's piece, with Fischer claiming that his critics were just "not mature enough" to handle the truth.  In defending his view, Fischer offered a rather telling... MORE >

Bryan Fischer has dedicated almost every minute of his program since the Supreme Court upheld the health care reform legislation last week to railing against it and has been growing increasingly outraged and apocalyptic with every passing day. The trend continued yesterday when Fischer seized upon an old Brietbart article about a survey conducted by a Tea Party-affiliated group called the Doctor Patient Medical Association Foundation that supposedly found that 83% of doctors are thinking about quitting the practice of medicine and nearly half would stop accepted Medicaid/Medicare patients... Bryan Fischer has not been reluctant to voice his hatred of  the Supreme Court's ruling upholding the constitutionality of health care reform, calling it "legal garbage" and total gibberish that signals the end of America. On Friday's radio program, Fischer continued the assault, declaring that the decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts was so fundamentally illogical and irrational that there must be something was wrong with his brain, perhaps rooted in the fact that Roberts takes medication for epilepsy: Fischer has spent three days absolutely tearing apart this... While collecting reactions from the Religious Right to yesterday's ruling upholding health care reform legislation, one person we didn't include was Bryan Fischer since we were waiting until his radio program aired to see just how outraged he was over the ruling. And was he ever outraged, kicking off his program by declaring that "America no longer exists as a constitutional republic," suggesting that the authors of the decision ought to be impeached, questioning Chief Justice John Roberts' sanity, and calling the decision "legal garbage" that should be tossed in a...
