As RWW readers know, the Values Voter Summit, the year’s biggest political gathering for the Religious Right, took place in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. Every Republican presidential candidate with the exception of Jon Huntsman addressed the summit, evidence of the continuing importance of Religious Right activists and political groups to the GOP. Polls suggest that the Religious Right is about twice as big as the Tea Party, with significant overlap between the two movements. Ron Paul’s campaign packed in enough voters to win the straw poll, but it would be wrong... MORE >

Judicial Watch founder Larry Klayman took to Renew America to demand Americans “take matters into our own hands and wage a Second American Revolution” against President Barack Obama, who he calls “our mullah in chief.” The conservative activist focuses on the bid to recognize Palestinian statehood in the United Nations to attack Obama and the “self-hating ultra-leftist Jews Obama surrounds himself with.” Klayman writes: It always amazes me how naïve many in the conservative movement are. While optimism is generally a good thing, there is no cause for... MORE >

Wendy Wright, who left her job as president of Concerned Women for America under mysterious conditions, is continuing her right-wing activism by taking the fight to the Girl Scouts of the USA. Wright joined Janet Parshall yesterday on In The Market to discuss their shared antipathy to the Girl Scouts and what parents can do to fight the Girl Scouts. Wright, who previously argued that the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood were “working together to steal children's innocence and make them vulnerable to the negative consequences of promiscuity thereby creating clients for their abortion... Earlier this year the The Boston Globe profiled notorious anti-gay activist Scott Lively and reported that he was going to be "toning down his antigay rhetoric and shifting his focus to helping the downtrodden." Needless to say, this "kinder and gentler" Scott Lively was rather short-lived ... so it is no surprise that he is now writing pieces that are literally titled "'Gay Marriage' as a Sign of the End Times": God has chosen rampant homosexuality to be a key warning sign for judgment of the world as a whole, and not just of individual nations ... I have made... MORE >

In the Family Research Council’s latest prayer target list, the organization asks people to pray for countries, Malawi in particular, that have laws criminalizing sodomy. The FRC believes that they are facing unfair pressure from the U.S. to decriminalize homosexuality, and accuses the Obama administration of “pushing homosexuality, using taxpayer dollars.” According to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Malawi is one of more than 70 countries that outlaw “same-sex relations between consenting adults” and earlier this year... After she was forced out as head of the Texas GOP, Cathie Adams became Eagle Forum’s International Issues Chairman. Adams, who as president of Eagle Forum’s Texas chapter denied that Obama is a Christian and insisted that scientists will soon start cloning humans for the purposes of “injecting them with diseases and studying them, then killing them,” is now arguing that the United Nations is using environmentalism to destroy Christianity in American youth. Joining the many Religious Right leaders who have derided environmentalism an anti-Christian movement, Adams... MORE >

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) has intensified his defense of the deposed president of the Ivory Coast. Laurent Gbagbo, the country’s Roman Catholic president, lost a December election to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, who is Muslim. While the country’s electoral commission and the international community, including African nations, recognized Ouattara as the winner, Gbagbo’s appointed national council threw out the results (saying Ouattara won through voter fraud) and Gbagbo declared himself the winner. Gbagbo’s wife, an evangelical Christian, even declared that “... MORE >

Apparently, even a prayer service for the thousands of people deceased and missing in Japan is a reason for the far-right Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD) to bash mainline Protestants. When the Church Center of the United Nations hosted an interfaith “Gathering for Prayer and Hope” in the wake of the deadly earthquake and tsunami to hit Japan to “provide us with the spiritual encouragement and strength to overcome this time of suffering together,” according to Rev. T. K. Nakagaki. But the IRD, a Religious Right organization that is always looking for... MORE >
