Cathie Adams of the Texas Eagle Forum suggested last week that people are leaving states like Massachusetts for Texas as a result of their different marriage laws, and advised gay Texans and their supporters to simply leave the state. During the Texas Values anti-gay press conference, Adams said that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage is a reason for its population growth: “Texas is the fastest growing state in the nation and there is a reason for that, and part of that reason is traditional marriage.” She continued: This is good for Texas families. We do not accept the... MORE >

Last week, we reported on the efforts of Cathie Adams, the former Texas GOP chairwoman who now leads the state’s Eagle Forum group, to preserve language in the state party platform that declared “the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit.” While the party ultimately removed the “fabric of society language” — ignoring Adams’s warning that such a move would lead to society’s “demise” — it added language endorsing the discredited practice of “ex-gay... The Texas Eagle Forum had quite the line-up for its "Patriotic Banquet at the 2014 GOP Convention" with Ted Cruz, David Barton, and Tom DeLay all speaking. Listening to anti-gay activists continually insist that "it was through a terrible misuse of the Bible that the African slave trade was sanctioned" is getting really tiresome. Matt Walsh is outraged by "transgendered toddlers," saying it's "A tragedy. A tragedy of nonsense. Horrible, abusive, pathetic, sad, bizarre, tragic nonsense." Watching the Religious Right frame efforts to... MORE >

We reported back in April that Eagle Forum, a staunchly anti-gay Religious Right group, announced that it would pressure the Texas GOP to back ex-gay therapy and other anti-gay measures in its party platform. The Texas GOP convention, which banned conservative gay rights groups from participating, appears to have agreed on including ex-gay advocacy as part of its platform, according to a draft of the platform obtained by the Houston Chronicle: We support the definition of marriage as a God-ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman. We... MORE >

Updated While subcommittees at the Texas GOP’s convention today rebuffed hardliners by removing some especially vicious anti-gay language from the state party’s platform and keeping an endorsement of an immigrant guest worker program, the debate over both issues continues. Brian wrote earlier today about the efforts of Texas conservatives to bring back the party platform’s previous hardline anti-immigration language , including those of Texas Eagle Forum leader and former state party chairwoman Cathie Adams, who has warned that immigration reform will bring about the... Just two years after the Texas GOP passed a resolution in support of a national guest-worker program, Republican activists are hoping to scrap the plank at this week’s state party convention. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that several delegates have complained that the provision amounts to “amnesty” and doesn’t send the message that “illegal immigration is illegal and shouldn’t be tolerated.” While Texas Republicans have pledged to focus on outreach to immigrant communities, their gubernatorial nominee, Attorney General Greg Abbott, has... Remember how the Texas Republican Party’s 2012 platform drew national attention for its radical and bizarre political positions? Well, if the Texas Eagle Forum has its way, the GOP state and county party committees would preserve their extremist stances and go even farther in embracing the far-right. The group has unveiled its lists of proposed resolutions for party committees in hopes of shaping the state GOP’s 2014 platform, asking members to demand Congress impeach and remove judges who rule in favor of gay rights and urge the party to approve a resolution condemning... Texas Eagle Forum head Cathie Adams was no fan of State Sen. Wendy Davis’ filibuster, which initially blocked anti-choice legislation in the state, until a second special session called by Gov. Rick Perry revived the draconian bill. In a newsletter sent to Eagle Forum members last week, Adams writes that the pandemonium in the Senate chambers that occurred after the GOP tried to end the filibuster was demonic: “They stood, applauded and yelled at the top of their lungs. Their excruciatingly piercing screams could only be compared to what evil must sound like emanating from the pit... MORE >
