Operation Save America

Operation Save America Calls Sandy Hook Interfaith Memorial Service an 'Affront to Almighty God'

When James Holmes opened fired in a Colorado movie theater in July, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others, Operation Save America quickly issued a press release calling Holmes "an Occupy Wall Street guy" who is "the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party."

So it is no surprise that the group has also issued a press release following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, blaming it on the removal of God from public schools while calling the interfaith memorial service held on Sunday "an affront to Almighty God" for not mentioning Jesus enough:

Watching the Memorial service for the twenty-six precious lives taken from us was painful to say the least, but it was far more painful to the God who made America great. Newtown cancelled Christmas so it could properly mourn. How foolish, yet typical of governmental strategy to replace God. The "Interfaith" service was an affront to Almighty God. Those claiming to be His priests barely mentioned His Name --Jesus! After all, He is the only God there is!

"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children." Hosea 4:6.

Can there be any doubt in anyone's mind today that America is in deep trouble? Blood is coursing down the corridors of our schools, workplaces, and streets and we look at each other with awkward amazement wondering what in the world has happened to us. We are being drained of every last penny of our wealth. We are losing our kids to gangs, drugs, violence, suicide, murder and every imaginable trivial pursuit. Our schools have become veritable jungles where survival of the fittest is the law of the hallway.

What happened? We violently removed the fear of Almighty God from the hearts of our children. We expelled God from school and banished Him from the schoolyard. He was replaced with metal detectors, condoms, policemen, anti-bullying policies, No-gun zones, and violence of unprecedented order. Our strategy has replaced God's Truth. We are losing our kids because we are ignoring God's Law.

Charlotte Prayer Rally Repents for 'Homosexuality and its Agenda that is Attacking the Nation'

David Benham organized a prayer rally in Charlotte to coincide with the opening of the Democratic National Convention called Charlotte 714, based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, along with groups like the North Carolina Values Coalition and Operation Save America, which is led by his father Flip Benham. While speaking to Janet Mefferd yesterday about the prayer rally, Benham said that Charlotte was chosen not only because it is the site of the DNC but also because the city was one of the few areas to vote against Amendment One, the same-sex marriage ban voters passed in May. Benham called Charlotte’s vote against anti-gay discrimination a sign of the “very desperate spiritual situation and moral situation in our country,” requiring “a citywide church service of repentance.” Later, Benham told Mefferd that America’s Christian majority must repent for tolerating abortion rights, no-fault divorce, legal pornography, “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and the “demonic ideologies” that he says have taken over the education system.

In North Carolina you know we just fought for Amendment One which was a constitutional amendment that simply said, this is exactly what the amendment said is the only legal marriage in North Carolina was between a man and a woman. We received—it was such a battle in North Carolina it blew me away. I already knew in my heart as most all of us Christians in America know that we are in a very desperate spiritual situation and moral situation in our country but it really hit home during Amendment One, so much so that when Amendment One passed I realized the only three counties in North Carolina that actually voted against the amendment were Charlotte, Raleigh and Asheville, our three cities. So we had all the rural areas and all the suburban areas but we lost all the cities. So I felt like, OK it’s time that we have a citywide church service of repentance and that’s the reason that we decided to do it right in the heart of Charlotte the night before the DNC.

We will always finger point but we don’t realize that OK if 87% of Americans are Christians and yet we have abortion on demand; we have no-fault divorce; we have pornography and perversion; we have a homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation; we have adultery; we have all of the things; we even have allowed demonic ideologies to take our universities and our public school systems while the church sits silent and just builds big churches. We are so complacent, we are so apathetic and we are very hypocritical in the church, that’s why the Bible says judgment begins in the house of God. So when we prayed at 714 we asked God and our city to forgive us for allowing these things in the house of God.

Flip Benham to Organize Charlotte Protests against the DNC's 'Culture of Death'

Operation Save America’s Flip Benham reacted to the Colorado shooting last week by claiming the suspect was “the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party.” Today, Benham announced that he will lead a protest of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next month because when “the devil throws a party, like this Democratic party it is imperative that the church show up.” He added that the shootings in Aurora, Columbine and Virginia Teach “are harbingers of the ‘Culture of Death’ that will be invading the streets of Charlotte” and the city must prepare “to raise up a standard in preparation for the DNC’s invasion.”

Blood is coursing down the streets of America -- Aurora Colorado, Columbine High School, Virginia Tech and we are still looking at each other in awkward bewilderment and wondering -- why? These killings are harbingers of the "Culture of Death" that will be invading the streets of Charlotte this Sept 3-6.

We have expelled God from school, banished Him from the schoolyard, and have replaced Him with drugs, gangs, condoms, rape and violence of unprecedented order. When the fear of God is removed from the hearts of our children violence always fills the void.

This is the agenda of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Operation Save America will hold a press conference at 400 S Tryon. When the devil throws a party, like this Democratic party it is imperative that the church show up.

Operation Save America is bringing King Jesus to the Queen City, Charlotte, to raise up a standard in preparation for the DNC's invasion. Jesus is The Standard!

Flip Benham Declares CO Shooter to be 'Spawn of the Ideology of the Democratic Party'

Flip Benham of Operation Save America has decided to join the cavalcade of blame being unleashed by the Religious Right over the tragic mass shooting in Colorado last night, declaring that the suspect is "an Occupy Wall Street guy" who is "the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party:"

James Holmes, an Occupy Wall Street guy, murdered 14 and wounded 50+ at a midnight showing of the Batman movie that portrayed OWS'ers in a bad light. Perhaps there is a motive here. Twenty four years old and filled with the culture of death! When we sow bloodshed in the womb we will reap it in the streets. It is a law. It is God's Law. It is a law as certain as the physical law of gravity. It is a "spiritual gravity" that applies to all people at all places at all times. Whether or not you believe it, it applies. King Jesus is the only answer. The whole National Guard couldn't make James do what is right. He has become his own law, showing contempt for authority and doing what is right in his own eyes. He is the product of the Culture of Death that the DNC has embraced.

There is not a police force big enough to make a young man do what is right. The only answer - there is a King whose name is Jesus. When He occupies the heart of a young man, that young man will lay down his life that others may live.

This is what has happened to our country when we remove God from the equation. We have stolen the fear of God from our children, Violence always fills the void. This is the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party and now we look at each other in awkward amazement, wondering "what in the world just happened?" The answer is we have stolen God from the hearts of our children.

Right Wing Leftovers

  • Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 48 today and the Traditional Values Coalition is not happy, saying it will "[molest] the minds of young impressionable youth."
  • Operation Save America will "provide a voice for Caylee Marie Anthony" on behalf of the "50 million unwanted American children have been murdered by their parents with impunity."
  • The Travis County Republicans will be providing buses to Gov. Rick Perry's prayer rally ... so be sure to sign up!
  • This is a real thing: "South Central L.A. Tea Party group will hold a major rally to expose the lies and misinformation of the NAACP."
  • Finally, quote of the day from Sally Kern: "We have more churches today ... that are saying homosexuality does not go against biblical truth. Another factor is homosexuality is being taught in our schools as a normal and acceptable lifestyle, so when that happens, you are going to have more young people coming out of school who have a more favorable attitude towards homosexuality."

Operation Save America To Harass Muslims Across The Nation

A few weeks back, we noted that Operation Save America had begun protesting mosques and screaming at worshipers that "Islam is a lie" and that "Jesus hates Muslims," forcing Muslim leaders in Connecticut to actually seek police protection from their harassment.

Today, the group announced that it intends to take its harassment to "mosques across the nation":

We, Operation Save America, are headed to Ground Zero in New York City, to begin our nationwide outreach to Muslims in America. We offer to our Muslim friends enslaved in the tyrannical bondage of Islam, the true source of liberty -- Jesus Christ!

First in New York City, then to Mosques across the nation!

The wounds that America is now suffering are, by in large, self-inflicted. We have forgotten the God who made this nation great and free. We have killed His children through abortion (over 50 million dead), called homosexuality good (an abomination in His sight), and prostrated Him to the level of all other false gods. God has not been silent. We are being judged. 9-11, the rise of Islam, and our present financial and social distresses are warnings of worse to come.

"God is calling America to repentance. We must begin here. Once we have returned to Him, we must go to those lost in the darkness and misery of Islam. We cannot build bridges or dialogue with this murderous false ideology. We are called to storm the gates of hell and set the captive free! We bring to America the warning that the rise of Islam is a sign of God's judgment upon a nation that has turned from Him!" Rev. Flip Benham, Director, Operation Save America.

Operation Save America: 9/11 Was God's Punishment for Abortion

It looks like Operation Save America is taking time off from harassing Muslims in order hold a press conference on 9/11 to deliver the "prophetic message" that God will continue to unleash terrorist attacks against the United States so long as abortion remains legal:

At noon on Saturday, September 11th, at the corner of Murray and Church Street in New York City leaders of Operation Save America will conduct a press conference and at 1 PM unveil a prophetic message to America.

Rev. Rusty Lee Thomas, Assistant Director of Operation Save America, states, "We are going to New York City at this hallowed time not to politicize September 11th, but to present a prophetic message, that if heeded, may prevent future attacks and restore God's hand of blessing upon our beleaguered nation.

"Our sins of child-killing (abortion) and homosexuality have reached heaven. They are the roots of America's troubles; a tyrannical government and the threat of Islam are the horrific fruits that are being produced under our watch. There is a direct connection between our spiritual and moral state and the litany of woe afflicting our nation. If America desires to secure a future and a hope for our children and grandchildren, we must end the American holocaust; quit parading our sin like Sodom, and return to the God of the Bible and His principles that served our nation so well in times past."

...

"Since 1973 America has murdered FIFTY MILLION precious little children by abortion. The Bible warns that bloodshed follows bloodshed. We have sown domestic terrorism in the womb and we are reaping Islamic terrorism without. America is being turned over to her enemies. Our only hope is to REPENT of murdering our children and return to God through the merits of Jesus Christ the Savior of the world. If we repent and end abortion, God will deliver us from the evil of Islamic terrorism. But if we refuse, our enemies will continue to afflict our nation. We will continue to reap what we have sown."

First Amendment Rights Are For Christians Only!

Earlier this week we noted that Flip Benham and members of Operation Save America had been targeting mosques for protests, screaming that "Jesus hate Muslims" and declaring "This is a war in America and we are taking it to the mosques around the country."

Even though the group is based in Texas, it has chosen to target mosques in Connecticut and Muslim leaders in the state are holding a press conference today to discuss the attacks:

The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut and other organizations are hosting a press conference and rally at 3 p.m. today (Friday) on the north side (Bushnell Park side) of the State Capitol.

The gathered hope to address recent outbreaks of Islamophobia in Connecticut, as well as the rest of the country. During Islam's holy month of Ramadan, Muslims have asked for police protection so that they can go to their mosques to pray in this state.

And so, of course, Operation Save America is responding by accusing Muslims of violating their First Amendment rights

In an unprecedented move, Muslim leaders in Connecticut are staging a press conference in Hartford this afternoon, to plead with legislators to censor the Gospel of Christ from the public forum around mosques.

That's right! They are using their own potential for violence to silence the Gospel of Christ. Gentle Christian saints will be conducting a press conference on the public sidewalk in front of the Bridgeport Islamic Center, aka Mafjid An-Noor Mosque in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Truth is hate to those who hate the truth.

Islam is not a religion, nor a cult, but a total and complete 100 % system of life. It has religious, legal, political, economic, social, and military components. In all of the 27 countries ruled by Islam, the church is the state! No other religion will be tolerated.

"Islam presents a monstrous worldview, birthed in the pit of hell, which brings untold misery and murder upon precious people created in the image of God. Religion is its cover (its beard) by which it gains entrance into nations where the 'freedom of religion' is sacrosanct. It then takes this freedom afforded to it, and begins its insidious takeover." Rev. Flip Benham of Operation Save America.

In essence, Benham is upset that Muslim leaders are exercising their First Amendment free speech rights in defense of their First Amendment religious freedoms because doing so represents a threat to his First Amendment right to scream that Jesus hates them.

Operation Save America Takes Anti-Islam Ideology To Its Logical Conclusion

The New York Times reports that protests against mosques are popping up all over the country, spurred on at least in part by the right-wing opposition to the "Ground Zero Mosque."

So I guess this sort of thing should not come as a surprise:

About a dozen right-wing Christians, carrying placards and yelling "Islam is a lie," angrily confronted worshippers outside a Fairfield Avenue mosque Friday.

"Jesus hates Muslims," they screamed at worshippers arriving at the Masjid An-Noor mosque to prepare for the holy week of Ramadan. One protester shoved a placard at a group of young children leaving the mosque. "Murderers," he shouted.

Police arrived on the scene to separate the groups, but said no arrests were made.

Flip Benham, of Dallas, Texas, organizer of the protest, was yelling at the worshipers with a bullhorn.

"This is a war in America and we are taking it to the mosques around the country," he said.

Muslim leaders in Connecticut are concerned that such protests will only escalate as Ramadan approaches and are now seeking police protection.

As it turns out Benham and his Operation Save America have been protesting Islam and all other religions for years now.  And until recently, OSA was a fringe group advocating an extremist right wing view.

Today, they are advocating that exact same view ... only it has now become the mainstream conservative view.

Religious Right Launches Holy War To Combat Muslim Prayer Rally

As we noted yesterday, Religious Right leaders are gathering for their own prayer rally/conference call to combat the upcoming Muslim prayer rally in Washington, DC in order to combat Islam's "dark spiritual intent" and efforts to take over America.

Now Operation Save America is getting into the act as well, openly declaring that they are heading to DC in order to wage spiritual battle against the rally participants and "storm the gates of hell to defeat the false god of Islam with the unsheathed Word of God and to set people free from the monstrous tyranny and bondage of this religion birthed in the deepest pits of hell":

The "Our Time Has Come" Islamic Juma prayer vigil to be held at our nation's capital. Thousands of Muslims from across the nation will be gathering at the Capitol Building for prayer from 4:00 AM Friday morning to 7:00 PM Friday night. They will make this statement of faith that will echo off the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial: "There is no God but Allah, and his prophet is Mohammad." This last statement demands a rebuke from the people of God. We are headed to D.C. to do just that with our faces low to the ground and our hearts filled with the Gospel of Christ that made this nation free and made this nation great.

Abortion is Murder
Homosexuality is Sin
Islam is a Lie

"What do these three have in common? They are, all three, physical manifestations of the battle between two seeds -- the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. Genesis 3:15. Islam is a visible manifestation of this battle and has been at war with Christianity for fourteen centuries. There is no dialogue, no common ground, no reaching across the aisle in this battle. We are not called to build bridges to Islam. We are called to storm the gates of hell -- to defeat the false god of Islam with the unsheathed Word of God and to set people free from the monstrous tyranny and bondage of this religion birthed in the deepest pits of hell." -- Rev. Flip Benham, Director, Operation Save America

The muslims say their "day" is come but we know that it is the day of the Lord -- not Allah but the one true Lord and the only king -- King Jesus! It is the Gospel of Christ that made this nation freer than any nation that ever existed on this planet. It is this Gospel that we will bring to the U.S. Capitol on 9/24/2009.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Demagogue

We've written about "Coach" Dave Daubenmire a few times in the past, once when he Alan Keyes, Rick Scarborough, and Peter Labarbera attended his "Gathering of Eagles" and another time when he signed on to a letter demanding Jed Babbin's firing as editor of Human Events for providing unacceptably positive coverage of Mitt Romney.

Recently, he was carrying out a "sleep in" demanding a face-to-face meeting with Congressman Zack Space.

That effort apparently catapulted him into right-wing media stardom according to this new profile of Daubenmire from Columbus, Ohio's "The Other Paper" entitled "Meet Your Local Demagogue":

Daubenmire founded Minute Men United, a nationwide organization of evangelical men who stage confrontational anti-homosexual actions at LGBT-friendly events with the self-appointed mission (as published in a Minute Men tract) of “uniting and mobilizing God-fearing Americans.” In August 2007, the Dispatch reported on the group’s interruption of LGBT-friendly church services at several Central Ohio churches, including King Avenue United Methodist Church in Columbus. They are a regular presence at Gay Pride parades across the nation. Daubenmire has been active, both in street protests (he spoke at the notorious Operation Save America rally in Downtown Columbus in 2004 that included a viewing of a human fetus in a coffin that the group was transporting to Washington for burial. Event organizers filed city burn permits to incinerate a copy of the Qu`ran, as well as rainbow flags).

...

But lately, Daubenmire’s new-media cultivation of his Christian, Libertarian-minded outrage (he bears no official ties to the Libertarian Party of Ohio) has landed him multiple appearances on Fox News, Geraldo Rivera’s talk show, and, according to his website, Hannity and Colmes, the CBS Evening News, The Edge with Paula Zahn and Scarborough County on MSNBC.

...

He attributes the demand from mass media outlets like Fox News for his appearance to two things: “number one, I’m uncompromising, I say what I think. And number two, I think I can articulate it in a way that people understand.”

Though Daubenmire sees no compromise in dialogues over crucial public policy issues such as health care reform, reproductive rights or gay marriage, he insists it isn’t because he is without empathy for those he refers to on his website as the “enemies of god.”

“I don’t get mad at my opposition because I used to think like them. I was a hell-raising, partying, carousing, howling dog. I’ve lived the sinful side. I know how that makes you think, makes you act,” said Daubenmire, a born-again evangelical who converted from Catholicism at 35.

The burden of being disliked, hated even, weighs on him he said comparing himself to the Apostle Paul. “’Do I now become your enemy because I tell the truth?’ That’s how I feel a lot of the time—I just speak the truth and make enemies.”

In Alabama, Religious-Right Factions Come Together and Break Apart

Among the handful of Christian Coalition chapters that parted ways with their national affiliate, the Alabama chapter has had the most acrimonious divorce. Not only did the old chapter – now called Christian Action Alabama – publicly disagree over a gambling measure with the replacement chapter, the two were embroiled in a lawsuit. Randy Brinson’s newly-formed Christian Coalition of Alabama claimed John Giles and Christian Action Alabama had absconded with Christian Coalition assets.

Now, Brinson and CC of Alabama are prepared to let bygones be bygones. “We dropped the lawsuit because basically we were getting such bad press out of it," he explained.

It’s been said that bad press is better than no press, however, and it may be a while before we hear from either faction again. While Brinson’s still trying to get the new CC of Alabama – which then-rival Giles had called “one man and a name” – off the ground, the old group appears to be moribund. Giles, who used to be its president and full-time lobbyist, found a job in the private sector, and says Christian Action Alabama will be “in an idle position” for the time being.

Meanwhile, anti-abortion activists are bringing another factional dispute to the state.

That Was Then, This is Now

As we noted the other day, the Religious Right was none-too-pleased that Rajan Zed, a Hindu clergyman, was scheduled to deliver the opening prayer in the United States Senate yesterday. Some were so opposed to it, in fact, that they got arrested for disrupting Zed’s prayer by shouting and calling it an “abomination” [see the video here.] The Carpetbagger Report has a good post on this issue which notes that, several years ago, the Family Research Council likewise objected when similar situation arose:
Back in September 2000, I took on a highly entertaining project while working at Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Venkatachalapathi Samuldrala, a Hindu chaplain, was invited to be the very first Hindu in American history to lead a congressional chamber in prayer. AU opposes official congressional prayers, but nevertheless believes that if lawmakers are going to have one, they better be even-handed about it. The Family Research Council didn’t see it that way. The group flipped out, said Samuldrala’s prayer could lead to “moral relativism and ethical chaos,” and explained its belief that religious liberty “was never intended to exalt other religions to the level that Christianity holds in our country’s heritage.” In other words, as the FRC saw it, minority faiths are separate and unequal, First Amendment be damned. I had a blast mocking the FRC for this, calling reporters and making the far-right group look pretty silly for demanding more religion in the public square and then balking at a religious invocation on the House floor. Eventually, the FRC not only backpedaled, it said the announcement condemning Samuldrala’s prayer was distributed by accident.
It appears that FRC either didn’t learn its lesson from this previous incident or has completely forgotten about it, as FRC is now fretting that Zed’s prayer is a sign that the U.S. Senate has taken "just one more step away" from America's Christian heritage and FRC president Tony Perkins just released this “special publication”:
There is no question that under the first amendment Zed enjoys freedom in this country that Christians do not enjoy in his home country. But does that mean it is appropriate for him to open the nation’s highest elected body in prayer? I think not … No one can legitimately challenge the fact that the God America refers to in the pledge, our national motto, and other places is the monotheistic God of the Jewish and Christian faith. There is no historic connection between America and the polytheistic creed of the Hindu faith. I seriously doubt that Americans want to change the motto, “In God we Trust, which Congress adopted in 1955, to, “In gods we Trust.” That is essentially what the United States Senate did today.
While we are on the subject, it should be noted that, according to various news sources, the three protestors were members of Operation Save America, which makes this quote all the more ludicrous:
The Rev. Flip Benham, director of Operation Save America/Operation Rescue, lambasted the decision to turn the prayer ceremony over to a non-Christian. He said that the protesters recited the First Commandment and offered prayers. They were not part of an organized group but were Christians who happened to be in Washington to fight the hate crimes bill. They did not know there was to be a Hindu prayer, Benham said.
Three members of Operation Save America just happened to be in the nearly empty Senate chamber yesterday morning at the very time that a Hindu clergyman was scheduled to deliver a prayer, yet they had no idea it was taking place despite the fact that various right-wing news outlets had been writing about it for weeks? Wow, what an amazing coincidence. Good thing they were there or else this “abomination” would have simply taken place quietly and Operation Save America would have completely missed out on an opportunity to generate some press coverage for itself.

Anti-Abortion Faction Accuses Major Groups of Selling out to GOP

The Washington Post today reports on the unusual spat among anti-abortion groups, apparently over the tactics of incrementalism versus absolutism, that spilled into public attacks against Focus on the Family founder James Dobson two weeks ago. Groups including Rev. Flip Benham’s Operation Rescue/Operation Save America and Colorado Right to Life placed a full-page ad in the Colorado Springs Gazette and the Washington Times demanding that Dobson “repent” for saying that a recent Supreme Court decision upholding the federal “Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act” would “protect children.”

Confusingly, a separate anti-abortion group also called Operation Rescue praised Dobson for pushing the ban, and Colorado Right to Life’s national parent group also said it was in “complete disagreement” with its state affiliate.

In the Post, Colorado Right to Life President Brian Rohrbough fired back. A Focus on the Family spokesman said they supported the ban “because we, and most pro-lifers, are sophisticated enough to know we're not going to win a total victory all at once. We're going to win piece by piece.” But Rohrbough said the decision “encourage[s] abortionists to find less shocking means to kill late-term babies.”

"What happened in the abortion world is that groups like National Right to Life, they're really a wing of the Republican Party, and they're not geared to push for personhood for an unborn child -- they're geared to getting Republicans elected," he said. "So we're seeing these ridiculous laws like the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban put forward, and then we're deceived about what they really do."

More Namesake Anti-Abortion Factions Clash

As we wrote yesterday, James Dobson’s applause for the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the “Partial Birth Abortion Ban” led to an unusual row between far-right anti-abortion groups: One group claiming the name Operation Rescue condemned Dobson for backsliding and called on him to “please repent,” while another group also calling itself Operation Rescue defended the Focus on the Family leader. Oddly enough, a similar dispute emerged out of the same anti-Dobson campaign.

Colorado Right to Life joined Flip Benham’s Operation Rescue/Operation Save America in taking out a full-page ad in the Gazette, the newspaper in Colorado Springs, where Focus on the Family is located. Focus’s Citizenlink web site responded with an article that enlists the support of Colorado Right to Life’s parent group, National Right to Life:

The National Right to Life Committee said it’s “in complete disagreement” with an ad sponsored by a state affiliate that attacks Dr. James Dobson, founder and chairman of Focus on the Family Action. …

David O’Steen, executive director of National Right to Life in Washington, D.C., said the Colorado affiliate is wrong about the court ruling. “It’s the first time that the court has allowed the legislative branch to outlaw a specific abortion procedure,” O’Steen told CitizenLink. “We think it’s a great victory.”

The Colorado affiliate is also wrong about Dobson, he explained. “We appreciate Dr. Dobson, and we appreciate his support to end partial birth abortion,” O’Steen said. “We agree with him that the decision is a breakthrough.”

As the New York Times reported, National Right to Life sees the Supreme Court’s decision as a vindication of its strategy emphasizing that abortion restrictions are important because women don’t know better – an idea seemingly echoed by the court’s majority opinion.

Operation What's-Its-Name

Today, Operation Rescue is among a handful of far-Right groups attacking James Dobson for saying a recent Supreme Court ruling upholding the so-called “Partial-Birth Abortion Ban” would “protect children”:

In a full-page ad in The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs, the group said Dobson wrongly characterized the court's April ruling as a victory for abortion foes. The ad said the ruling will actually encourage medical professionals to find "less shocking" methods than late-term abortions, which abortion opponents often call "partial-birth abortion."

"Dr. Dobson, you mislead Christians claiming this ruling will 'protect children.' The court granted no authority to save the life of even a single child," the ad said. It concludes by asking Dobson to "please repent." A spokesman for Dobson did not immediately return a call. …

The letter is signed by Brian Rohrbough, president of Colorado Right to Life; the Rev. Tom Euteneuer, president of Human Life International; Flip Benham, director of Operation Rescue/Operation Save America; Judie Brown, president of American Life League; and Bob Enyart, pastor of Denver Bible Church.

Also today, Operation Rescue is joining the Christian Defense Coalition for a press conference in Wichita “to demand to know how the federal government plans to enforce the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act now that it has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.” In fact, Operation Rescue released a statement that it is “proud to stand with Dr. Dobson” on the Supreme Court case.

Today’s confusion arises from an internecine squabble rivaling the spat between Chris Simcox’s Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and Jim Gilchrist’s Minuteman Project.

Operation Rescue, a militant anti-abortion group founded by Randall Terry in 1988, was at the center of a legal battle over organized clinic blockades. In an effort to evade various restraining orders, debt, and monetary judgments, Terry shut down the Binghamton, New York-based Operation Rescue and reformed it as Operation Rescue National out of a much smaller office in South Carolina. Benham became national director of this group around 1994, by which time the group was struggling to keep its head above water as the clinic-access laws and headlines of murdered doctors kept participation low.

Benham started using the appellation “Operation Rescue/Operation Save America” (with “Operation Save America” letterhead) around 2000. According to Pennsylvania anti-abortion activist Steve Wetzel of Missionaries to the Unborn, “In a personal telephone conversation, Flip explained that the name change was necessary due to the large number of lawsuits filed against the Operation Rescue name - and a name change was the only way out of those lawsuits.”

As for the other Operation Rescue, also known as Operation Rescue West, that’s Troy Newman. Although Newman’s version of Operation Rescue frequently collaborates with Patrick Mahoney and Christian Defense Coalition, which Mahoney and Randall Terry founded together, Benham fervently disputes the legacy. From an Operation Save America release in January, in which the group distanced itself from Newman’s protest in Kansas:

Troy Newman is not now, nor has he ever been, the Director of Operation Rescue. He simply stole the name. …

Some of you might believe you are coming to an Operation Rescue sponsored event in Wichita this January. You are not! Flip Benham, Keith Tucci, and Operation Rescue leaders from across the nation will have no part in this event. This is not the organization that was leading the Summer of Mercy in 1991, or 2001. This is a group of about five or six people using our name to promote their event. It is not and never has been the Christian ministry you know as Operation Rescue.

Benham further declared, “Troy owning the name Operation Rescue is no more legal than abortion is.” Newman responded, “I feel that I don't ‘own’ the name; I am preserving a legacy that was purchased by tens of thousands of Christians and their sacrifice. Operation Rescue is a movement that can not be owned or controlled.”

It’s also a movement that can hardly be kept track of.

Operation Save America 'Storming Gates of Hell' ... at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart “has become an enemy of God … Rather than honoring God, Wal-Mart is now promoting homosexual sodomy and the killing of His children.”

Operation Save America Targets Mississippi's Only Clinic

The Associated Press reports on dueling rallies in Jackson, Mississippi as the National Organization of Women and others sought to counter the efforts of Rev. Flip Benham’s Operation Save America, which “is holding rallies across Jackson in an effort to force the closure of Mississippi's only abortion clinic.”

Flip Benham, Operation Save America director, said his group will remain in Mississippi until the Jackson Women's Health Organization abortion clinic shuts its doors for good.

"I'm here to tell the truth," Benham said to an abortion rights advocate who questioned why he was at the rally. "We were out at the clinic earlier today and we are out here to bring the gospel. Of course, when you do that — bring the real gospel — all hell is going to break loose and all of heaven is going to come down."

He said there were eight abortion clinics in Mississippi in 1993, the last time his group came to the state, "and now you have only one abortion mill and what you are seeing is that all eyes are turned to Mississippi."

Operation Save America, formerly known as Operation Rescue, had a reputation for militancy under the leadership of Randall Terry, as when OR protestors stormed a police barricade in front of a clinic in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1992, as Max Blumenthal reported. In Mississippi, the tactic appears to be increasing regulation targeted at the last clinic in the state. Curiously, however, the AP reported of Saturday’s protests in Jackson,

A bomb threat halted the rally, leading to angry exchanges between the groups. The Jackson Police Department cleared the park and blew up a package found by a bomb squad. Officers would not say what the package contained.

When James Holmes opened fired in a Colorado movie theater in July, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others, Operation Save America quickly issued a press release calling Holmes "an Occupy Wall Street guy" who is "the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party." So it is no surprise that the group has also issued a press release following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, blaming it on the removal of God from public schools while calling the interfaith memorial service held on Sunday "an affront to Almighty God" for not mentioning... Benham called Charlotte... MORE >

Operation Save America’s Flip Benham reacted to the Colorado shooting last week by claiming the suspect was “the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party.” Today, Benham announced that he will lead a protest of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte next month because when “the devil throws a party, like this Democratic party it is imperative that the church show up.” He added that the shootings in Aurora, Columbine and Virginia Teach “are harbingers of the ‘Culture of Death’ that will be invading the streets of Charlotte”... Flip Benham of Operation Save America has decided to join the cavalcade of blame being unleashed by the Religious Right over the tragic mass shooting in Colorado last night, declaring that the suspect is "an Occupy Wall Street guy" who is "the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party:"  James Holmes, an Occupy Wall Street guy, murdered 14 and wounded 50+ at a midnight showing of the Batman movie that portrayed OWS'ers in a bad light. Perhaps there is a motive here. Twenty four years old and filled with the culture of death! When we sow bloodshed in the womb we... MORE >

Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 48 today and the Traditional Values Coalition is not happy, saying it will "[molest] the minds of young impressionable youth." Operation Save America will "provide a voice for Caylee Marie Anthony" on behalf of the "50 million unwanted American children have been murdered by their parents with impunity." The Travis County Republicans will be providing buses to Gov. Rick Perry's prayer rally ... so be sure to sign up! This is a real thing: "South Central L.A. A few weeks back, we noted that Operation Save America had begun protesting mosques and screaming at worshipers that "Islam is a lie" and that "Jesus hates Muslims," forcing Muslim leaders in Connecticut to actually seek police protection from their harassment. Today, the group announced that it intends to take its harassment to "mosques across the nation": We, Operation Save America, are headed to Ground Zero in New York City, to begin our nationwide outreach to Muslims in America. We offer to our Muslim friends enslaved in the tyrannical bondage of Islam, the... MORE >

It looks like Operation Save America is taking time off from harassing Muslims in order hold a press conference on 9/11 to deliver the "prophetic message" that God will continue to unleash terrorist attacks against the United States so long as abortion remains legal: At noon on Saturday, September 11th, at the corner of Murray and Church Street in New York City leaders of Operation Save America will conduct a press conference and at 1 PM unveil a prophetic message to America. Rev. Rusty Lee Thomas, Assistant Director of Operation Save America, states, "We are going to New York... MORE >

Earlier this week we noted that Flip Benham and members of Operation Save America had been targeting mosques for protests, screaming that "Jesus hate Muslims" and declaring "This is a war in America and we are taking it to the mosques around the country." Even though the group is based in Texas, it has chosen to target mosques in Connecticut and Muslim leaders in the state are holding a press conference today to discuss the attacks:  The Muslim Coalition of Connecticut and other organizations are hosting a press conference and rally at 3 p.m. today (Friday) on...
