Religious Right Cheers On Vladimir Putin As Anti-LGBT Violence In Russia Surges

While most of the news on Russia this week has been focused on the country’s ongoing financial collapse, it is important to highlight a report released by Human Rights Watch on Monday documenting the rise of anti-LGBT violence in Russia along with the ways the government, which recently passed new laws curbing LGBT rights, has ensured virtual impunity for the perpetrators of such attacks. Following the report’s release, Russia added a LGBT legal aid group to a list of NGOs that must register as “foreign agents.”

The uptick in violence against LGBT Russians certainly won't discourage Religious Right activists from supporting Putin, many of whom also seem more than willing to ignore his deadly incursion into Ukraine , support for laws curbing the freedoms of Russian evangelical Christians and other human rights abuses.

Nothing, it seems, can dissuade many of Putin’s American supporters, several of whom recently attended an anti-LGBT conference at the Kremlin, from believing that the U.S. should adopt anti-gay laws modeled on Russia’s, such as a ban on gay “propaganda” and adoption by same-sex parents.

In fact, many Religious Right activists in the U.S. believe that Putin is on a mission from God to save Russia, and the world, from the LGBT community.

Crush on Putin

It is no secret that many conservatives have fallen under Putin’s spell.

Matt Drudge has called Putin the “leader of the free world.” Sarah Palin has fawned over the Russian leader’s wrestling abilities. Franklin Graham has hailed Putin for “protecting children from any homosexual agenda or propaganda” and having “taken a stand to protect his nation’s children from the damaging effects of any gay and lesbian agenda.” Larry Jacobs of the World Congress of Families, the group that helped organize the Kremlin meeting, praised Putin last year for “preventing [gay people] from corrupting children.”

Religious Right leader and Iowa GOP kingmaker Bob Vander Plaats has upheld Putin as a world leader in morality. Josh Craddock, who represents Personhood USA at the United Nations, came back from the Kremlin conference cheering on Russia as a “light to the world.” Liberty Counsel chairman Mat Staver expressed offense last year that Obama would dare criticize Putin. One Fox News host wished that Putin could be president of the United States, even for just 48 hours.

Any violence against Russian gays, one Religious Right group explained, is probably “provoked by homosexual activists.” Massachusetts-based pastor Scott Lively, who has taken credit for inspiring Russia’s “propaganda” law, dismissed anti-LGBT violence in Russia as a “hoax” and told right-wing radio show host Linda Harvey that if violent anti-gay incidents occur, other gay people were likely the perpetrators.

God Will Favor Russia Instead Of America, Thanks Obama

Anti-gay activists think that God has decided to bless Russia, thanks to Putin’s leadership, while punishing the U.S. for passing rebellious gay rights laws. Pat Buchanan clearly articulated this mindset in a column in April titled “Is God Now On Russia’s Side?,” in which he likened the U.S. and Western Europe to Sodom and Gomorrah and cheerfully proclaimed that “Putin is planting Russia’s flag firmly on the side of traditional Christianity.”

In a February column, Don Feder of the World Congress of Families gushed that Putin had become the new Ronald Reagan: “As my friend and Russian pro-family leader Alexey Komov likes to say: 'Under Reagan, America helped to save us from communism. We'd like to return the favor.'”

Lively made the case last year that Putin is “the only world leader capable of standing up to the West” and could “inspire all the morally conservative countries of the world to adopt a similar law that he just adopted.” In the same interview, Lively called Obama the Antichrist.

“The country that’s acting like it’s part of the kingdom of the Antichrist is the United States of America, and Russia is standing against homosexual marriage, they’re standing for traditional family values,” Religious Right radio host Rick Wiles said in September. “The United States is exporting its wickedness, we’re using our power and might to force nations to change their laws to accept abortion, to accept homosexual marriage and homosexual rights, so which country is part of the Antichrist system and which is not?”

Wiles even predicted that the U.S. would soon go to war against Russia “with an atheistic, Jesus-hating, pro-homosexual, pro-lesbian, pro-transgender military and we're going to go up against another military carrying a Christian cross.”

Bring Anti-Gay Laws To The U.S.

Anti-gay activist Matt Barber said earlier this year that it was “encouraging” to see more anti-gay measures coming out of Russia, adding that he would like to see laws that “stop this homosexual activist propaganda from corrupting children in our nation and we need to see that right here in the United States.”

Peter LaBarbera called Russia’s “propaganda” law an “acceptable” and necessary way to stop companies like Disney from “promoting lesbianism to kids,” while American Family Association governmental affairs director Sandy Rios said the speech-inhibiting law was just “common sense.”

One of Putin’s most vocal cheerleaders, American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer, has called him a “lion of Christianity” and repeatedly demanded that the U.S. enact similar bans on gay “propaganda.”

Since the U.S. hasn’t embrace such an anti-gay crackdown, Religious Right activist William Murray writes, Americans are now “fleeing” to Russia in order to avoid LGBT equality at home.

Mat Staver To Headline Jamaica Conference Hosted By Group Defending Anti-Sodomy Laws

American Religious Right leaders Mat Staver and Judith Reisman are scheduled to be featured speakers at a conference in Jamaica this weekend hosted by a group that has been working to preserve the country’s criminal ban on consensual gay sex.

The annual conference, hosted by the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, will focus on how “[c]ontemporary society has become increasingly hostile to the traditional definitions of marriage and family” and Staver, the head of Liberty Counsel, will discuss “global legal trends impacting the institution of the family.”

JCHS’s conference has drawn prominent American anti-gay activists before. In 2012, two top lawyers for the Alliance Defending Freedom spoke at the conference, one of whom defended Jamaica’s anti-sodomy law, calling homosexuality “harmful not only spiritually and psychologically, but also physically.” Last year, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality’s Peter LaBarbera made an appearance at the conference, urging Jamaicans: “Do not be like us, do not be like Britain, do not sit idly by as so-called ‘LGBT activists’ manipulate words and laws to achieve dominance in your country.”

LaBarbera distanced himself from the U.S. State Department’s support for LGBT rights around the world, telling attendees (as transcribed by a Buzzfeed reporter who attended):

I do not stand with my government. I’m a patriotic American, but I do not stand with the current United States government in its promotion of homosexuality and gender confusion. But I do stand with the Jamaican people … I pray that you will learn from our mistakes and from lessons of history and avoid the inevitable moral corruption and health hazards and the danger to young people that come from capitulating to this sin movement that calls itself gay. It is almost now can be predicted with 100 percent accuracy, if the law is a teacher: If you take down this law, it will only lead to more demands. Appeasement does not work.

MassResistance’s Brian Camenker has also headlined a rally for the group.

The groups organizing the conference have opposed efforts to overturn the country’s anti-sodomy laws, which impose up to 10 years imprisonment for gay sex. Jamaica CAUSE, a cosponsor, organized rallies earlier this year to oppose an effort to overturn the law. The main sponsor, Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, also supports keeping the laws. On its website, JCHS provides a document called “Frequently Asked Questions About The Buggery Law” that attributes homosexuality to “economic reasons, direct Satanic influence, media and entertainment enticement, and experiences during incarceration” and cautions, “If determining human rights is separated from morality and based on individual freedom without any restraints, all perversions will in due time become ‘rights’.”

In a section on countries with greater freedom for LGBT people, the group adopts the American Right’s persecution messaging:

Why is it so important to certain countries, such as the UK, that Jamaica removes the buggery law?

Homosexuals in those countries have gained political power and so are able to use the machinery of the state to achieve their ends. It is interesting to note that the aim in these countries is not just that the buggery law is repealed, but that all types of sexual behaviour, including pedophilia and bestiality, should be eventually legalized as alternative sexual orientations. Further, the removal of the buggery law often results in attacks on freedom of speech and religion so that those who speak out against homosexuality are discriminated against and victimized. They want all types of sexual behavior to be legal.

JCHS defends Jamaica’s anti-sodomy, or “buggery,” law this way:

Since the buggery law is difficult to police shouldn’t it be removed from the books? Laws have multiple roles. (i) instruction on right behaviour that benefit individuals and society (ii) deterrence against wrong behaviour (iii) punishment for wrong behaviour. The law of the land bears witness to that which the state approves. This is important because this determines, for example, what can and can’t be taught to children in schools. Laws against murder, littering and traffic violations have not prevented these activities but that is no reason for these laws to be removed. Because a law cannot be policed does not mean it should be removed.

The group also provides images like this as “media resources”:

Peter LaBarbera: Obama 'Will Have To Answer To God' For His 'Pro-Homosexual' Actions

In an interview last week on Voice of Christian Youth America’s “Crosstalk” radio program, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality denounced President Obama as “the most pro-homosexual president in our history.”

LaBarbera told host Vic Eliason that Obama has “homosexualized our military” and “has done great damage to the morality of this country by helping persuade people that this sin is okay through his actions of helping to normalize homosexuality.”

“So Barack Obama will have to answer to God for all that he’s done to help normalize this terrible sin of homosexual behavior,” LaBarbera said, before attacking Republicans for their “cowardice” on the issue of gay rights and letting “homosexual activists buy off the Republican Party.”

LaBarbera said that while the GOP will attract African American and Latino voters if the party embraces an anti-gay message, Republicans are either “going silent, or even worse, going against their pro-family and pro-life plank in the Republican Party.”

Right Wing Bonus Tracks - 10/20/14

  • Focus on the Family has denounced End Times fanatic Rick Wiles over his comments that "Ebola could solve America’s problems with atheism, homosexuality, sexual promiscuity, pornography and abortion."
  • Religious Right activists continue to freak out over the situation in Houston.
  • Linda Harvey will be joining Michael Brown and Stephen Black as speakers at Peter LaBarbera's upcoming banquet.
  • Oh good, the Christian film studio behind "God Is Not Dead" is planning a sequel.
  • Finally, BarbWire really is becoming a repository of truly radical pieces, including articles approvingly citing Steven Anderson, an Arizona pastor who literally calls for gays to be put to death.

LaBarbera: America Must Embrace 'Christian Oriented Law That Does Not Try To Grant Civil Rights Status To A Sin'

Peter LaBarbera appeared on the "Point of View" radio program yesterday where he proclaimed that America must embrace "Christian oriented law" so that groups like his Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, the Family Research Council, and the America Family Association will no longer be smeared as "hate groups" because of their anti-gay activism.

Saying that gay activists no longer believe in tolerance, LaBarbera declared that such activists are intent on destroying anyone who will not embrace the "fiction" that gay relationships are acceptable by attacking them as haters.

Lamenting that a number of Religious Right groups have been classified as anti-gay hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is costing them access to the media and undermining their credibility, LaBarbera said that the solution is "to return to a basic law, a Christian oriented law that does not try to grant civil rights status to a sin, which is homosexuality."

Think about that: LaBarbera advocates repealing all laws that ensure equal rights and protections for gays and then complains about the fact that his organization is considered to be an anti-gay hate group:

Anti-Gay Activists: We Need Our Rosa Parks!

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, visited Janet Mefferd’s radio program yesterday to discuss his call for “civil disobedience on a massive scale” to protest marriage equality and “the gay thought police.” The two agreed that the anti-gay movement is ready for its own Rosa Parks to spark a national outcry with an act of civil disobedience…against marriage equality.

“One of the watershed moments, if not the watershed moment, of the civil rights movement was when Rosa Parks just said, ‘I’m not giving up my seat on the bus, I’m not doing it,’” Mefferd said. “And this sweet woman ended up becoming this massive hero and she didn’t have any other idea behind it other than she didn’t think it was right and she was correct in that. Seems to me we need a Rosa Parks moment and I know we’ve had some of those already where they’ve gone to court over it, but just say, ‘Do your worst, I’m not doing this, I’m not going to do this because this is against my conscience.’”

LaBarbera insisted that governors should flout court rulings striking down same-sex marriage bans and urged anti-gay activists to emulate anti-abortion “sidewalk counselors,” who protest abortion by approaching women entering clinics.

We’re not sure what exactly LaBarbera proposes doing. Maybe he envisions approaching same-sex couples as they walk to their weddings?

LaBarbera also complained that gay rights groups such as GLAAD and HRC are “censoring” him by quoting his extreme rhetoric verbatim and took issue with people who compare anti-gay activists to racists.

If anything, LaBarbera explained, gay people and racists have more in common: “I wouldn’t mind debating David Duke on racism. He’s a racist, I’m not. I think that would be a fun debate. Racism is a sin, just like homosexual practice is a sin.”

LaBarbera added that “the most discriminated against group are the ex-gays, the people who left homosexuality, who are routinely the victims of dehumanization and demonization.”

Peter LaBarbera Vows 'Massive Civil Disobedience' To Block Gay Marriages

Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality is not exactly pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear appeals on several marriage equality cases, warning in a statement today that as a result of the court’s non-decision “we live not in freedom but under tyranny.”

“Now is the time for civil disobedience on a massive scale: we hope that statesmen and citizens alike -— in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Indiana, Utah and Virginia — indeed, any state where the people’s will has been robbed by elitist judges — will reassert their state sovereignty against escalating judicial supremacy,” LaBarbera writes. “God is not mocked: the Scriptures are clear that homosexual practice is an offense against both God and the very bodies of those who practice it (as is all sexual immorality).”

We are witnessing a "gradual Roe v. Wade" by which unelected judges impose homosexual 'marriage' on the nation. Hubris rules the day as millions of Americans' votes defending actual marriage (one man, one woman) are negated by one court ruling after another. Each decision bastardizes America's noble quest for racial justice by invoking "equality" for unions based on disordered sexual behavior that can never be "equal" to God-ordained sex within marriage. Now the nation's highest court is content to let the ongoing disenfranchisement become law.

Yesterday's action by the Supreme Court only solidifies the idea that the powerful elites who dominate politics, media and culture do not care what the people think, expressed through the ballot box or their elected state legislators. And if "We the People's" votes do not count, then We live not in freedom but under tyranny.

The notion that nine men and women in black robes know more about what constitutes marriage than 76 percent of Oklahoma's voters is insulting and preposterous. Now is the time for civil disobedience on a massive scale: we hope that statesmen and citizens alike--in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Indiana, Utah and Virginia—indeed, any state where the people's will has been robbed by elitist judges—will reassert their state sovereignty against escalating judicial supremacy.

From a moral and spiritual perspective, no court or government action can—to quote from the ill-informed ruling of Appeals Court Judge Richard Posner--"confer respectability on a sexual relationship" between two people of the same sex. Homosexual activists yearn to be told that their defining sin is not a sin at all—and legalizing genderless "marriage" is their holy grail to achieve that end. "Love is love," we are told, or rather scolded. But God is not mocked: the Scriptures are clear that homosexual practice is an offense against both God and the very bodies of those who practice it (as is all sexual immorality).

The truly loving thing for Christians to do is not to "bless" same-sex relationships but to guide men and women caught up in false homosexual identities to the One, Jesus, who will forgive them and guide them to a life pleasing to God.

Peter LaBarbera: LGBT Rights Advocates Want People To Be 'Ignorant'

Linda Harvey hosted Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality this weekend on her “Mission America” radio show, where the two activists warned that schools are using misleading information as part of their efforts to keep “promoting” homosexuality to children.

“This is such a betrayal of our vulnerable children,” Harvey lamented, criticizing the “mythology” surrounding homosexuality.

LaBarbera, for his part, denounced “politically correct” schools for making students “ignorant” by using LGBT-affirming lesson plans: “The kids are learning — they are so ignorant of so many basic facts and truth on this issue.”

Peter LaBarbera: We Need Anti-Gay Campaigns Like We Have for Tobacco

On VCY America’s “Crosstalk” radio program last week, anti-gay activist Peter LaBarbera and host Vic Eliason waxed nostalgic for the days when LGBT people could not live openly for fear of violence and discrimination against them.

“We’re going to be talking about something that’s very unpleasant. It’s called homosexuality…lesbian activity…LGBT kind of stuff,” Eliason warned his listeners before fondly recalling an era when gays and lesbians didn’t feel comfortable coming out. “In an illicit manner people had created a lifestyle that was permissive, it was lewd and lascivious. They were violating a moral code — and so they were hiding in the closet.”

LaBarbera pointed his finger at the “homosexual lobby” for wanting to “normalize the abnormal.” He lamented that America is witnessing a rise in “biblical illiteracy” and that “people are ignorant to the facts of homosexuality.”

Citing links between sex between men and exposure to HIV, LaBarbera explained the need for anti-gay awareness campaigns like those used to warn against tobacco use. “Where are the cries to stop practicing this behavior?” he demanded. “They did that for smoking, why not for homosexual behavior?”

Anti-Gay Activist Peter LaBarbera: I'm Like A Jew In Nazi Germany!

Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality is joining the chorus of anti-gay activists likening themselves to Jews living in Nazi Germany, twice drawing comparisons to Nazism during a Friday interview with conservative talk show host Janet Mefferd.

While discussing the Human Rights Campaign’s “Export of Hate” report and what he claims are Right Wing Watch’s misrepresentations of his remarks, LaBarbera said of gay rights supporters: “They’re doing to us what the Nazis did to the Jews.”

“We have to trust in God to protect us,” LaBarbera said, suggesting that criticism of his anti-gay activism is fanning the flames of violence.

“This demonization is just — it’s what’s been done to minorities to the past and like I said, it’s what the Nazis did to the Jews,” LaBarbera added. “We’re losing our freedoms.”

LaBarbera repeatedly told Mefferd that HRC and others are trying to stop him from appearing in the media, which is actually exactly what LaBarbera did to gay rights advocate Wayne Besen.

Peter LaBarbera Warns God Will Punish Sears, America For 'Surpassing Sodom'

Americans For Truth About Homosexuality’s Peter LaBarbera stopped by “Crosstalk” on Monday to warn of divine retribution for the United States, and specifically the Sears company, for supporting gay rights.

The anti-gay activist and host Jim Schneider of Voice of Christian Youth America criticized Sears for participating in the Chicago Pride Parade and releasing a video featuring same-sex couples getting married.

“There goes Sears,” LaBarbera said. “I watched the video, it’s just so sad and tragic to me. The Bible says there’s a way to seems right to a man but the end of that way is death, basically. Attaching the perversion of homosexuality, which God called an abomination, detestable behavior, attaching that to marriage is just ungodly. It’s sad to see corporations celebrating this to get more sales and we’ll see if Sears suffers for this capitulation to the homosexual activist movement.”

LaBarbera also fielded a call from a listener named Steve who speculated that extreme weather in California is divine punishment for the state’s LGBT rights laws. LaBarbera sympathized with the caller’s theory: “The idea that America can go on promoting the worst kind of sins, and now the latest is sadomasochism after homosexuality, and not be judged, I think that’s folly.”

Speaking with another caller who compared the U.S. to Sodom and Gomorrah, LaBarbera said that “in some areas, we’ve surpassed Sodom.”

GOP's Base Clamors To Impeach Obama

Nearly two years into President Obama’s second term, a do-nothing Republican Congress is focusing on its next project: the 2014 midterm elections. But that effort might be complicated by increasing pressure from the party’s base to turn Congress’ energy to impeaching President Obama. The impeachment call, which has existed on the right-wing fringe since the start of Obama’s presidency, has picked up steam in recent weeks as it has been endorsed by right-wing media figures, activists and elected officials.

This has put Republican congressional leaders in a tricky spot as they attempt to placate their base without alienating moderate voters. When House Majority Whip Steve Scalise appeared on Fox News Sunday this week, he continually dodged the question. Ted Cruz similarly batted away a question about impeachment, calling it politically unfeasible. Right-wing leaders including Pat Buchanan and Tom DeLay have urged caution in the impeachment campaign, although DeLay said he would personally “love to impeach him.” Likewise, Karl Rove has warned that when it comes to impeachment, “the politics of it are all wrong.”

Even Rep. Steve Stockman of Texas, who last year distributed to every office on Capitol Hill a book on why the president should be impeached and removed from office and hired an attorney to look into impeachment, is now backtracking and warning that impeachment proceedings could benefit Democrats in the midterm elections.

Now, House Speaker John Boehner is claiming that talk of impeachment is a Democratic “scam” to win voters…an odd claim since it’s members of his own party who have been beating the drum about impeachment.

But it might be too late for Republicans to backtrack on a steady buildup of rhetoric questioning the president’s legitimacy, love of country, and authority to govern, which has led to increasing calls for impeachment from right-wing lawmakers, activists and media personalities... although nobody can quite agree on what the impeachment should be for.

  • In a radio interview last week, Rep. Michele Bachmann said that she believed the president has "committed impeachable offenses” but that first “the American people have to agree with and be behind and call for the president’s impeachment.”
  • This month, Rep. Lou Barletta of Pennsylvania said that there are “probably” the votes in the House to impeach the president for “absolutely ignoring the Constitution, and ignoring the laws, and ignoring the checks and balances.”
  • Also last year, Rep. Kerry Bentivolio of Michigan said that impeaching the president would be “a dream come true.”

Peter LaBarbera: Evangelicals Who Don't Fight Gay Rights are 'Unwilling to Confront The Realities Of Evil'

On a segment of “Sandy Rios in the Morning” last week, Americans For Truth About Homosexuality president Peter LaBarbera lamented the plight of the lowly Religious Right activist.

An expert on the evils of the LGBT movement, LaBarbera warned Rios that lawmakers, businesses and citizens are increasingly beholden to the demands of the “homosexual lobby,” regardless of their religious convictions. While LaBarbera and Rios wasted no time directing barbs at President Obama and pro-equality Democrats, LaBarbera mostly reserved his scorn for religious leaders and establishment Republicans for allegedly “bowing to the pressures” of gay rights advocates.

Rankled by the supposed lack of opposition to LGBT rights within the conservative movement, LaBarbera wondered, “I’m not sure anymore if evangelical Christians can actually be effective cultural warriors, so many are unwilling to confront the reality of evil, which is the promotion of the sin movement.” He contrasted the vigor of the gay rights movement, “which is implacable, which is always moving forward,” with the Religious Right, which he said is waging the “politics of defeatism.”

The idleness of conservative leaders, LaBarbera argued, has paved the way for the “special treatment” of LGBT people who believe that “laws don’t apply to them.”

Discussing recent LGBT Pride events, he also noted that while pornography, adultery and promiscuity are still considered taboo, the LGBT community is celebrated, perhaps, he posits, to “overcompensate” for knowing in their “heart of hearts” that homosexuality is also sinful.

Peter LaBarbera Says Men Are Gay Because They Just Want A 'Cheap Orgasm,' Obama 'Obsessed' With Homosexuality

James David Manning, the New York pastor who has warned of "Obama's homo-demons" and posted a "Stone Homos" sign on his church, hosted Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality on his radio show this week.

LaBarbera, who has devoted his entire life to combating gay rights, accused President Obama of being "obsessed" with homosexuality: "He's pandering to such a degree that it's like there is a spiritual force behind this, because who can explain the obsession that Barack Obama and his administration have for this issue."

LaBarbera also maintained that men are gay because they are too afraid of marrying a woman and having kids, as a "real man" would, and instead just want "the cheap orgasm."

"Homosexuality is robbing the potential husbands of women in the black community, and that's applicable to all women. I think homosexuality is one sense offers to men, if I can say this on your program, it offers the cheap orgasm. It's a lot harder to be a man, a real man and have a family, court a woman, marry a woman, have children, raise a family."

The anti-LGBT activist also said parents "have to start inoculating kids" against homosexuality and the "evil" of same-sex marriage. If someone tells them they are gay, LaBarbera advises, one should respond by asking: "Are you really? Because I don't think God wants homosexuality."

Peter LaBarbera Tells Michael Sam To Get Ex-Gay Therapy Or Be Reviled

Americans For Truth About Homosexuality’s Peter LaBarbera has sent a letter to Michael Sam asking him to consider ex-gay therapy, citing the HIV/AIDS rate among African Americans.

LaBarbera also warned Sam that by coming out of the closet and “celebrating homosexuality as normative,” he will face “notoriety among millions of us.”

LaBarbera has previously urged Sam to seek ex-gay therapy and lamented that he was “forced” to watch Sam kiss his boyfriend on television.

Michael, do we have to tell you that, especially with your current publicity, you are a role model because of your athletic prowess, but since “coming out” you are also modeling a lifestyle that the cost for those living it, has been unpublicized but appalling—as it has for society. The troubling fact is minorities are suffering most and in growing numbers. The evidence:

• Black youth–your fans among them–ages 13-24 are twice as likely to get HIV/AIDS than those of other ethnic groups.
• 94-95 percent of all HIV cases in 2011 among boys and young men ages 13-24 were linked to homosexual sex, the CDC reports.
• Youth 13-24 incur 26 percent of new HIV/AIDS infections each year.
• An estimated 60 percent of 13-24 year-olds are unaware that they’re infected with HIV; such ignorance can be a death sentence.
• Black men having sex with men (MSM) accounted in 2010 for 39 percent of all HIV/AIDS diagnoses.

Secondary to the toll in pain and death among MSM is the drain on U.S. medical and financial resources; for example, anti-viral drugs, which can prolong MSM life about 20 years, cost over $24,000 per year. They do prolong life but must be taken scrupulously or the MSM becomes infectious. To treat an HIV/AIDS victim costs from $400,000 to $600,000 from infection to death. In total, the HIV/AIDS epidemic costs the country about $5 billion per year, says CDC Director Dr. Tom Freiden.

Believe it or not, no one is born “gay”; molestation, emotional deprivation, parental or peer rejection, or other traumatic factors can foster same-sex attraction–but many men and women have managed it, diminished it, or eliminated it altogether. [See these heartwarming ex-"gay" testimonies.] Many accomplished this through Reparative Therapy and counseling, despite the relentless, unwarranted condemnation of and campaign against both by self-serving “gay” activists.

What we hope for from you, Michael, is that you don’t make your feelings, well-publicized as they have been, your claim to fame. Your achievements on the football field will earn you a legacy you can be proud of; your “coming out” as one celebrating homosexuality as normative can earn you only regret, as well as notoriety among millions of us.

Anti-Gay Activists Hopeful Hobby Lobby Will Lead To License To Discriminate

Anti-gay activists are rejoicing at the Supreme Court's decision in Hobby Lobby today, in part because they are hopeful that the decision will pave the way for one of their own policy goals: to use the religious liberty argument to push for broad exemptions for corporations from nondiscrimination laws.

Liberty Counsel's Matt Barber is hopeful that the decision bodes well for those trying to use religious freedom as a cloak to justify discrimination against LGBT people:

Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality has a similar take:

There may be reason for them to be optimistic. As SCOTUSblog pointed out, the majority's opinion pointedly leaves open "the question of whether the Government has a similarly compelling interest in preventing discrimination on the basis of sex or sexual orientation."

With respect to implications for other kinds of religious-based discrimination, the Court writes that racial discrimination in hiring will not be permitted under RFRA because "The Government has a compelling interest in providing equal opportunity to participate in the workforce without regard to race, and prohibitions on racial discrimination are precisely tailored to acheive [sic] that critical goal." Note that this leave open the question of whether the Government has a similarly compelling interest in preventing discrimination on the basis of sex or sexual orientation.

UPDATE: TPM has more on this.

UPDATE II: Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association has joined the chorus:

Peter LaBarbera Defends Uganda, Warns Of Gay 'Neo-Imperialism'

Yesterday on VCY America’s flagship radio show “Crosstalk,” Peter LaBarbera expressed outrage over Joe Biden’s recent remarks in support of LGBT rights, accusing the vice president of “neo-imperialism.”

LaBarbera, the head of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, defended draconian anti-gay laws in Uganda and Jamaica: “The American government has embraced a neo-imperialism where we arrogantly override the beliefs of countries like Jamaica and Uganda and other countries with the idea that we, America, know what’s best for the world.”

He went on to tell host Jim Schneider that homosexuality is “destructive” and “highly dangerous.”

“This is not civilized behavior, this is sinful, destructive behavior which is being celebrated by our government, and if that’s not bad enough, then forced upon the world as if America with all of our sin and all of our decadence knows what is best for the world,” he said.

Noting the low turnout at recent anti-gay events, LaBarbera wondered if “God has given up on America” since “many people are giving in now” on gay marriage.

He also encouraged the boycott of pro-LGBT companies like JCPenney, Macy’s, Starbucks: “There has to be a price to pay.” He specifically called out Honey Maid, which drew the ire of Religious Right activists for its inclusive TV ads. “I’ll never touch those crackers again,” he said.

LaBarbera also took a call from a listener who said that the country is “headed for a civil war” to stop liberals from “destroying our great country.”

LaBarbera responded that liberals are “dangerous” due to their “intolerance.”

“They will not allow in their minds the acceptability as legitimate of a viewpoint against homosexuality, which means they’re against God,” he added.

Peter LaBarbera Insists Homophobes Are Just Born That Way

In his interview with Peter LaBarbera this week, former InfoWars reporter David Ortiz argued that homophobia, especially for straight men, is “intuitive” and that the only sensible reaction to homosexuality is revulsion.

“If homosexuality was so normal, why is it every man’s instinctive response at first is to be disgusted by that?” he asked.

LaBarbera kicked it up a notch with the assertion that “homophobia” is a made-up word, manufactured by LGBT advocates to gain mainstream acceptance and vilify those who are inherently repelled by homosexuality.

“You’re absolutely right, there is a natural inhibition against homosexual behavior,” LaBarbera said. “I’m worried that young people are so brainwashed and they’re so indoctrinated that they’re losing that natural sense that we have.”

Peter LaBarbera Fears LGBT History Initiative Will Destroy America

A new National Park Service initiative to recognize locations significant in the history of the LGBT rights movement such as the Stonewall Inn has obviously upset Religious Right activists, including Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality.

In an interview Friday with OneNewsNow – a “news” site run by the American Family Association, which is currently leading a bizarre campaign against the Harvey Milk commemorative stamp – LaBarbera said that the new LGBT history initiative is “bringing down” America to the point where it “cannot survive in the long run.”

"We're going to teach our kids and our citizens that homosexuality is a civil rights issue when it's not," he laments. "It's a human misbehavior issue. It's just a sin movement – and we're elevating it to civil rights icon status."

"I fear for our country, because when a nation starts celebrating sexual immorality as the norm and as a social good, then that nation cannot survive in the long run," he explains. "Every other civilization has been brought down for sexual immorality as part of the factors bringing it down, and I think the United States of America will not be an exception in that regard."

LaBarbera adds the homosexual lobby is so powerful, it can push for something – such as the Park Service policy – and it's a done deal before most Americans even know about it, such as the Harvey Milk commemorative postage stamp.

Peter LaBarbera Angry He Was 'Forced' To Watch Michael Sam Kiss His Boyfriend

Americans For Truth About Homosexuality president Peter LaBarbera – who has joined other anti-gay activists in attacking the media for airing footage of Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend after learning that he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams – appeared on “Crosstalk” yesterday to discuss the kiss.

LaBarbera blasted media outlets for having “reported the kiss without giving the other side of people who would voice disapproval of people being forced and subjected to through the media these homosexual acts, the homosexual perversion.”

“Crosstalk” host Jim Schneider of VCY America even wondered if the NFL is “going to be requiring some kind of homosexual quota in the future.”

Later in the interview, when a caller credited LaBarbera and pastor Scott Lively for making “great strides abroad in places like Uganda,” LaBarbera lamented that “America is leaving God behind and we’ve become one of the most radical nations on Earth now.”

Following the report’s release, Russia added a LGBT legal aid group to a list of NGOs that must register as “foreign agents.” The uptick in violence against LGBT Russians certainly... MORE >

American Religious Right leaders Mat Staver and Judith Reisman are scheduled to be featured speakers at a conference in Jamaica this weekend hosted by a group that has been working to preserve the country’s criminal ban on consensual gay sex. The annual conference, hosted by the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society, will focus on how “[c]ontemporary society has become increasingly hostile to the traditional definitions of marriage and family” and Staver, the head of Liberty Counsel, will discuss “global legal trends impacting the institution of the family.”... In an interview last week on Voice of Christian Youth America’s “Crosstalk” radio program, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality denounced President Obama as “the most pro-homosexual president in our history.” LaBarbera told host Vic Eliason that Obama has “homosexualized our military” and “has done great damage to the morality of this country by helping persuade people that this sin is okay through his actions of helping to normalize homosexuality.” “So Barack Obama will have to answer to God for all that he... Focus on the Family has denounced End Times fanatic Rick Wiles over his comments that "Ebola could solve America’s problems with atheism, homosexuality, sexual promiscuity, pornography and abortion." Religious Right activists continue to freak out over the situation in Houston. Linda Harvey will be joining Michael Brown and Stephen Black as speakers at Peter LaBarbera's upcoming banquet. Oh good, the Christian film studio behind "God Is Not Dead" is planning a sequel. Finally, BarbWire really is becoming a repository of truly radical pieces,... MORE >

Saying that gay activists no longer believe in tolerance, LaBarbera declared that such activists are intent on destroying anyone who will not embrace the "fiction" that gay relationships are acceptable by... “One of the watershed moments, if not the watershed moment, of the civil rights movement was when Rosa Parks just said, ‘I’m not giving up... Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality is not exactly pleased with the Supreme Court’s decision not to hear appeals on several marriage equality cases, warning in a statement today that as a result of the court’s non-decision “we live not in freedom but under tyranny.” “Now is the time for civil disobedience on a massive scale: we hope that statesmen and citizens alike -— in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Indiana, Utah and Virginia — indeed, any state where the people’s will has been robbed by elitist judges — will reassert their... LaBarbera, for his part, denounced “politically correct” schools for making students “ignorant” by using LGBT-affirming... MORE >
