Gary Bauer: Obama 'More Interested In Defending The Reputation Of Islam' Than 'Saving The Lives Of Christians'

Gary Bauer’s speech to the Values Voter Summit today was a parade of anti-Muslim rhetoric — fitting for a conference on protecting “religious liberty”— that led up to him accusing President Obama of being “more interested in defending the reputation of Islam than he [is] in saving the lives of Christians.” “Obama and his allies do everything they can to rip out of our society all the vestiges that made this Judeo-Christian civilization” which “liberal elites can’t stand,” he declared. If the next Republican presidential... MORE >

This weekend, Republican elected officials including Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul, and Gov. Bobby Jindal will take part in what has become an annual ritual for potential GOP presidential contenders: they will seek to curry the favor of the Religious Right by speaking at the Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit. In doing so, they put themselves in the company of some of the most radical groups and activists working today to dehumanize LGBT people, roll back reproductive rights, tear down the wall between church and state, and deny free exercise rights to religious minorities.... A dejected Gary Bauer appeared today on “The Steve Malzberg Show,” where he said he doesn’t know whether “the emotion I most feel is anger or disgust” over the two court rulings today on marriage equality. “America is now a country where the opinion of the people means nothing,” Bauer said. “We’re in deep trouble indeed.” Bauer also scolded his fellow Republicans for not doing enough to oppose gay rights: “It is demoralizing to see how few Republicans are willing to publically show their outrage about these kinds of decisions.... It didn’t take long for Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins to misrepresent a recent poll their groups commissioned which found that “82 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independents believe marriage ‘should be defined only as a union between one man and one woman.’” Speaking with Perkins on Washington Watch yesterday, Bauer claimed that the poll actually proves that most Americans opposed legalizing same-sex marriage: “While certainly, particularly among young people, there is some shift on this issue, most Americans still understand that marriage is... Yesterday in an interview with Religious Right broadcaster Janet Mefferd, National Organization for Marriage president Brian Brown said that his group’s march against gay rights near the Supreme Court reminded him of the Civil Rights Movement. “I was not alive during the Civil Rights Movement but this is what it must have felt like,” Brown said. This isn’t the first time Brown has compared anti-gay activists to the Civil Rights Movement, however, that hasn’t stopped him from criticizing President Obama for linking the movement for gay rights to the struggle for... Bauer: 'The Republican Party Would Literally Destroy Itself' If It Drops Anti-Gay, Anti-Choice Stances

Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families appeared on The Mike Huckabee Show today to discuss the upcoming marriage cases at the Supreme Court, where he reiterated his argument that the GOP would be winning more elections if focused more on opposing gay equality and reproductive rights. Like other conservative activists who have floated the creation of an anti-gay third party, Bauer told Huckabee that “the Republican Party would literally destroy itself if it switches on those issues” as “we are facing the possibility of a possible fissure here which would hurt... Gary Bauer filled in for Family Research Council head Tony Perkins on Washington Watch yesterday where he once again blamed the Republican Party’s problems on a lack of opposition to gay marriage and abortion rights. Bauer, who once led the FRC but now runs American Values and the Campaign for Working Families, chided President Obama for favoring marriage equality and claimed that “if Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today” he would condemn Obama’s pro-gay rights stance, which Bauer said “twisted and distorted” the legacy of the civil rights movement.... A little over a week ago, we noted that Gary Bauer had started posting videos on his YouTube page discussing current events, meaning that now we have the displeasure of watching him deliver his smug, self-righteous commentary on a weekly basis. On Friday, Bauer weighed in on the attack in Libya where he repeated the false claim that the Marines had been prohibited from carrying live ammunition before mocking the Egyptian embassy staff and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for denouncing those who "hurt the religious feelings of Muslims" or "denigrate the religious beliefs of...
