GOP Readies Investigations into Muslim Americans

Republican leaders in Congress are preparing new investigations into everything from climate change scientists to Elizabeth Warren, and now Rep. Peter King (R-NY) , the incoming Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, has announced the latest target: Muslim Americans. While Republican attempts to vilify and demonize Muslim Americans are nothing new, King’s plans for congressional hearings takes the GOP’s anti-Muslim zeal to a new, and dangerous, level.

King previously wanted to investigate the planners of the Park51 Islamic Community Center, saying, “It’s a house of worship, but we are at war with al-Qaida,” and his proposed hearings could endanger collaboration between law enforcement offices and Muslim communities, inflame religious tensions, and usher in the return of classic McCarthy tactics to the House.

The move by Mr. King, who said he was planning to open a hearing on the matter beginning early next year, is the latest example of the new direction that the House will take under the incoming Republican majority.

Told of Mr. King’s plan, Muslim leaders expressed strong opposition, describing the move as a prejudiced act that was akin to racial profiling and that would unfairly cast suspicion on an entire group.

Abed A. Ayoub, the legal director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said Mr. King’s effort ignored that Muslim leaders around the country had been working closely with law enforcement officials since the 2001 terror attacks.

“We are disturbed that this representative who is in a leadership position does not have the understanding and knowledge of what the realities are on the ground,” Mr. Ayoub said, adding that Mr. King’s proposal “has bigoted intentions.”

This won’t be the only effort by the newly-empowered Republicans to put Muslims in their crosshairs. Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) previously tried to investigate the Council on American Islamic Relations which she accused of trying to turn Capitol Hill interns into “spies.” Myrick, who wrote the foreword of a WorldNetDaily book on the matter, recently told Fox News that terrorist groups are sending members to Venezuela to learn Spanish and then to Mexico to illegally cross the boarder into the US.

GOP Rep: Terrorists May Learn Spanish to Pose as Illegal Immigrants

According to Representative Sue Myrick (R-NC), Hezbollah agents may be learning Spanish and disguising themselves as illegal immigrants in order to get into the US. TPM reported the following exchange between her and her FOX News interviewer:

“It really bothers me because here we are with a porous border, not really paying attention to who is coming over, what's happening with Iran and Hugo Chavez and Venezuela. We know that there are people going to Venezuela learning Spanish and then coming up through Mexico with fake documents trying to cross the border. If they're stopped they say, "Well, I'm Mexican or Spanish."

…[FOX] host Brian Kilmeade was convinced: "Instead of talking about Mexicans coming here for a better life, we're talking about Hezbollah coming here to infiltrate our borders and attack the country. That would change the entire dialogue when it comes to illegal immigration."

(Myrick’s proof that this is taking place, by the way, is that some imprisoned gang members in the Southwest have tattoos in Farsi.)

Yesterday the right wing checked off three hateful strategies from our Right Wing Playbook on Immigration Reform. Now Rep Myrick and her pals at FOX are taking care of a fourth: illogically portraying immigrants as criminals and terrorists.

From the Pages of WorldNetDaily to the Halls of Congress

The Hill reports that several Republican members of Congress are demanding an investigation into allegations that the Council on American Islamic Relations tried to plant "spies" in the national security apparatus:

Republican members of the Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus say the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), tried to plant “spies” within key national security committees to shape legislative policy in its favor.

Reps. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), John Shadegg (R-Ariz.), Paul Broun (R-Ga.) and Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), citing the recently released book Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that's Conspiring to Islamize America, called for the House sergeant at arms to investigate whether CAIR had been successful in placing interns on key committees. The lawmakers are specifically focused on the House Homeland Security Committee, Intelligence Committee and Judiciary Committee.

“If an organization is connected to or supports terrorists [and] is running influence operations or planting spies in key national security-related offices I think this needs to be made known,” Broun said. “So I join my colleagues here today in calling for action.”

The book, which was written by P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry with a forward by Myrick, is scheduled to be released Thursday.

I think this tells you pretty much everything you need to know about this book and its legitimacy:
