"I Have to Say 'Merry Christmas,' I'm Being Patriotic"

Just when you think you have pretty much heard every possible explanation as to why people ought to say "Merry Christman" instead of things like "Happy Holidays," some Religious Right activist comes up with a new reason you could not possibly have anticipated ... like the fact that you have to say "Merry Christmas" if you want to be patriotic:

In 1870 Christmas was DESIGNATED a Federal Holiday by Congress and signed into law by President Grant. Christmas is described as, not just a Federal Holiday, but a "Christian" Federal Holiday! (Google "U.S. Federal Holidays" and see for yourself-- know your history!) Therefore, we are being patriotic when we say, "Merry Christmas," or when we display and express the symbols of Christmas--nativity scenes, Christmas carols that mention Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection, etc. This observance, by law, is to be done on public property, such as, court houses and public schools!

Sharon Overstreet, wife of the pastor at Believers Baptist Church in Leesburg, Virginia is the woman responsible for this new campaign and she was recently featured on Concerned Women for America's radio program where she explained the origins of the idea:

It was very frustrating, as we've all experienced for years, to just watch our precious Christian heritage be stomped on at Christmas time.

That is what prompted us finally to do something about it and a year ago we had come up with this idea about it being patriotic because I did some research and found that Christmas is a congressional mandated holiday. It is a designated Christian - and it says "Christian" - holiday by Congress in 1870.

And if anyone were to look up on-line, just Google "US holidays, national holidays," it will come up and it was say "Christian holiday."

So we decided that, wow, we're being patriotic if we say "Merry Christmas." We could take a stand for Christmas and be patriotic and not have to hide our faces at all and just tell people "well, I have to say Merry Christmas. I'm being patriotic."

And by this logic, I suppose that means those who don't say "Merry Christmas" are unpatriotic.

Huckabee Calls for Execution of Those Responsible For WikiLeaks Documents

Via the Florida Independent, we see that Mike Huckabee delivered a speech at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA yesterday and also gave a short interview to local media during which he was asked about the latest WikiLeaks documents, to which he responded by calling for the execution of the person (or persons) responsible for leaking the documents and blasted the New York Times for reporting on them:

Who ever in our government leaked that information is guilty of treason and I think anything less than execution too kind a penalty. They put Americans lives at risk. They’ve put relationships that will take decades to rebuild at risk, and they knew full well that they were handling sensitive documents. They were entrusted and anyone who had access to that level of information was not only a person who understood what their rules were, but they also signed, under oath, a commitment that they would not violate it. They did. And I believe they have committed treason against this country and any lives they endanger, they’re personally responsible for and the blood is on their hands.

And in addition to their reckless irresponsibility and act criminal intent, I think the New York Times has shown an utter reckless disregard for any responsible journalism by printing something that they know they have obtained in a way that is not appropriate.

Land Calls for Constitutional Amendent Instituting Retention Elections For SCOTUS, Federal Judges

In day two of James Dobson's discussion with Richard Land on the state of America today that I mentioned earlier, Land let loose on the dangers of health care reform, guaranteeing that it'll fill the lives of everyone with pain and misery:

Land: I'm absolutely confident in saying this: ninety-nine percent of the people who are hearing me right now over the radio, if Obamacare is not rescinded, you will live a shorter life and it'll be more filled with pain and suffering before you die because they're not going to give you hip transplants, they're not going to give you knee transplants, and they're not going to give you other treatments as you go into old age.

Eventually, the topic turned to the vote in Iowa which removed three state Supreme Court justices, prompting Land to announce his desire to see constitutional amendment passed that would institute this process nationwide:

Land: In Iowa they have what seems to me to be a very sensible law and I'm ready to start a discussion that we ought to have it at the federal level.

I'm ready to put an amendment to the Constitution that says that every six years, on a rotating basis, we'll have three Supreme Court justices and they will be on the ballot nationwide, and you get to vote - I want to keep Justice Scalia or I don't want to keep Justice Scalia.

And the same thing with federal district court judges - in the district where they serve, you get to vote whether you're going to keep them or not.

Dobson: Well, to do that you'd have to have a constitutional amendment ...

Land: Yes sir , I'm ready to start ...

Dobson: I'll go with you ...

Land: Judges aren't all that popular. 

Hypocrisy Runs In the Dobson Family

James Dobson has dedicated the last two days of his radio program to a discussion with Richard Land about the recent elections and the general state of America today (hint: everything has been terrible since the 1960s.)

During the interview, Land lamented the "the sexual revolution" and the rise in divorce, which prompted Ryan Dobson to pipe up with this observation:

Dobson: You were saying earlier, when you were talking about marriage, when you look at the number of people who live together before they get married, it's unreal. People seem to want to test drive their relationships. They don't want to commit to someone for better or worse, they want to have some kind of a performance evaluation in their vows of marriage where if you're making me happy or you're making me feel fulfilled then I'll stay with you. But the minute things start to go south, that's it, I'm out. And too many people, too many Christians, are bringing that kind of attitude into their marriage relationship and I think we have to tell people "you have to be committed for life."

Just allow me to point out that, in 2001, Ryan Dobson divorced his wife.

It seems that blatant hypocrisy just runs in the Dobson family.

Rick Scarborough Stands By His Man

Even before he fell from power, Tom DeLay and Vision America's Rick Scarborough had been very close, with DeLay appearing via video at Scarborough's "Confronting the Judicial War on Faith" Conference back in 2005 and in person at Scarborough's "War on Christians" conference the following year just days before he resigned from Congress.

Since then, DeLay and Scarborough have maintained their relationship, with DeLay even appearing at Scarborough's church to proclaim that "America was created by God to spread the Gospel; to spread the word of Jesus Christ and to propagate Christianity" and as a weekly guest on Scarborough's radio program.

On Wednesday, a jury found DeLay guilty of money laundering and throughout the trial Scarborough sat in the courtroom to demonstrate his support and insists that DeLay has been railroaded:

Rick Scarborough, former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Pearland and founder of Vision America, sat through much of DeLay's trial. Scarborough said he became friends with DeLay because of his strong Christian faith and commitment to life. When he visited DeLay in Washington, he said, they would end meetings in prayer.

"We'd drop to our knees, read Scripture and pray. With Tom, it wasn't an act," Scarborough said.

...

Scarborough said he is convinced DeLay is innocent and his conviction will be overturned on appeal. Scarborough said he believes DeLay drew fire because he was one of the best and most effective House leaders in history.

"Tom did what Tom has always done. He learned the system," Scarborough said. "He used it within the framework of the law. He is simply better at it than anybody before him, and they crucified him for it."

And the reason DeLay was "crucified", Scarborough explained back in 2006, was because he was an exemplary Christian:

"I believe the most damaging thing that Tom DeLay has done in his life is take his faith seriously into public office, which made him a target for all those who despise the cause of Christ," Scarborough said, introducing DeLay yesterday. When DeLay finished, the host reminded the politician: "God always does his best work right after a crucifixion."
